The second book in the Guardians trilogy finds our group of six in Capri searching for the second falling star. The one concentrates of the romance between Sawyer and Annika. This is a romance that seemingly has a built-in ending date. Annika is a mermaid who was given legs so that she could take part in the quest to find the stars but will return to the sea in three months without them. Sawyer has a device that lets him travel in space and time.Sawyer is reluctant to begin a relationship with Annika for a number of reasons. The primary one for him is that Annika is new to life on land and dealing with humans. He sees her as an innocent in need of protection. Despite her lack of familiarity with humans, Annika is a woman who knows what she wants.Our villain, the dark goddess Nerezza, has found herself a human partner in Andre Malmon who is a bored killer who has had previous run-ins with Sawyer and with Riley. If he weren't so irredeemably evil, I could feel sorry for him because his relationship with Nerezza changes him for the worse. But Malmon makes his bargain eagerly and ends up changed and enslaved to her.Since one of the main viewpoint characters in this one isn't human, we get a lot of Annika's joy and curiosity. We also get a lot of opportunities to see her struggling with idioms and customs of humans. For example, she has a very different way of dealing with nakedness and talking about sex. Luckily, her new sisters Riley and Sasha are there to clear up some of her confusion.Again, this story is trademark Roberts in the relationships she builds between the characters and their acceptance of each others strengths and weaknesses. Friendships matter in a Roberts book. I can't wait to read the next one both to see the end to their quest and to see the relationship that is coming next.

~~~ No Spoilers in my reviews ~~~Note to readers... If you're new to the Guardians Trilogy, I highly recommend reading Stars of Fortune (Book One, the Guardians Trilogy) first. Book One truly sets everything up and improves the pleasure of reading Bay of Sighs. I guarantee that any reader beginning with Book Two will not only wish that they had read the books in order, they will also turn to immediately begin reading Stars of Fortune.We have another great new original publication by Nora Roberts in the Guardians Trilogy! Bay of Sighs, book two in the aforementioned trilogy, continues where Stars of Fortune (book 1) left off. The guardians are still pursuing the stars - one per book - while the relationships between the six continue to develop. As any Nora Roberts reader recognizes and I believe now expects, 3 women and 3 men featured in a trilogy allows one of the greatest pleasures of Ms. Roberts readers, her incredible talent for the perfect mix of developing romances, focusing heavily on one romantic couple per book, as well as fleshing out the deepening interpersonal relationships between the six.As the general plot was laid out in book 1, there was more availability in this book for the other characters' details and motivations. Of course there is no shortage of action and suspense either, both written as well as romance by Ms. Roberts.Seriously, is there anything she isn't able to write excellently???- I read an average of 5 books per week and there are very few books I ever read twice. I almost always find at minimum 3-5 proofreading errors and I don't recall the last time I caught any errors in new NR publications. I read most genres and have had these reading habits since I was a child. The ratio of books I'd look forward to re-reading versus the number of books in my personal library is minuscule. I have quite a few more Nora Roberts/ JD Robb (NR books actually) that I am able to truly enjoy reading again than any other authors.The greatest compliments I am personally able to give any author are actually wanting to read the book(s) again as well as missing the characters and "wondering" what they're up to as well as where their paths lead to in the future. I wholeheartedly extend these compliments to Ms. Roberts and thank her for diligently writing with such talent for all of her readers. My only wish is that she would revisit some of her previous series and pen new novels with the characters lives present day. We can only hope that maybe one day she'll do so.My only complaint (really more of an observation) is that going into any trilogy / series readers generally assume that the events in the second book / next to final edition will all work out and line up as a bridge to connect the final book. However, as part of her own special magic, Ms. Roberts masterfully keeps her readers glued straight through to the final page of Bay of Sighs.Ms. Roberts, thank you for a fantastic Saturday afternoon with Sasha, Annika, Riley, Bran, Doyle and Sawyer!I'll be missing them until I finish the trilogy...
I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts, especially her trilogies. However, this one is just plain awful. Same old story, same old characters, and same old formula for plot and character development that has been used way too much in her books lately. The first book was OK. I was hoping for better with the second book but I was sorely disappointed. I will read the third book just because I am OCD that way and have to finish the series. Maybe it will be better. Not holding my breath though.
I had no idea how you could write a book about one match, but Wertheim made it work. Great read and a match I recall watching fondly in a bar on the beach in Jamaica during my honeymoon after I got sunburned. Relived it serve by serve in this book and the author did not disappoint. Great back story on both players and some very good insight into both of their upbringings. Anyone who watched that match should read this book.
Rating:4 1/2 of 5 stars (excellent)Review:Mention the word "Wimbledon" and even non-tennis fans immediately know that you are talking about one of the most prestigious sporting events of the year. So when the finals pit the top two players at the time playing in a match that some consider the greatest tennis match ever played, it will take on a life of its own. L. Jon Wertheim writes about the match and that life it takes in "Strokes of Genius", a riveting account of the 2008 Wimbledon finals between top ranked Roger Federer and second ranked Rafael Nadal.Just a recap of the play on the court would make a terrific book. It was as even as a match could be, no matter which advanced tennis statistic one wants to use when evaluating the epic battle. While Wertheim's recap was not a shot-by-shot account, there is plenty of description of the action on the court. He writes it in such a detailed and descriptive manner that just like when I was watching the match on TV in 2008, I was getting goose bumps reading about it even though I knew what the outcome would be. I had to take a breath and exhale after reading the passage describing Federer's backhand shot to avoid losing in the fourth set tie-breaker. That describes how good both the match and the writing about the match were.Wertheim mixes in plenty of information and stories on the two tennis legends as well. These stories are well researched and the knowledge he has gained as a writer of tennis at Sports Illustrated is evident. Topics such as the players trying out new rackets, how they handle media requests and their middle-to-upper class upbringing are described in equal parts humor, detail and precision, with a dash of melancholy when appropriate. Some other nuances about the game in general are also included. One of the better passages on tennis came early in the book when he writes that only in tennis do the opponents warm up with each other. Nadal and Federer warmed up for this match by hitting balls to each other. Can you imagine Mariano Rivera throwing batting practice to David Ortiz? Or Tony Romo throwing warm-up passes to Victor Cruz?These stories are mixed into the play by play of the match at various points and this is the only downfall of the book. At times, these seemed to hamper the flow of reading the book. The best analogy to describe them is that they felt like excellent commercials you enjoy during breaks in the telecast of the match. I liked reading them, but would have preferred that they come at the beginning or end of chapters, not in the middle after reading about a fantastic Nadal serve or Federer return.Overall, this is an excellent book that any sports fan will enjoy. This was a match that does become one of those "Where were you when" questions. Reading it will help one relive those great memories.Did I skim?NoPace of the book:Good, despite the switching back and forth between topics.Positives:Many, but the best is the rich prose and style of writing. Wertheim paints a picture on each topic, from the game itself to Nadal's lifestyle (relatively simple for a sports superstar). This was the first book I read by him, although I have read many of his articles in Sports Illustrated and he is an excellent author.Negatives:Only the placement of stories and information on the players and the game. That was covered in the review. Otherwise, there were no negatives in this book.Do I recommend?Yes, especially for tennis fans. I do think, however, that just like the match, this book would attract non-tennis fans for the excellent storytelling and recap of a historic event.
I love reading about Nadal and Federer, who are the two greatest tennis players of all time. The book talks about how they learned the game, how they practice, how they think, and who influenced them. Plus MUCH MORE! It talks about the game of tennis and fills the reader in on what goes on at Wimbledon. It is just so interesting, I was actually sorry when I came to the last page. You will also discover Rafa Nadal's Uncle Tony and love him for how he thinks and what he instilled in Nadal. Totally unique and admirable characters and beyond interesting.
Wertheim somehow seemlessly weaves in the details of the match with a huge amount of information on the participants.Have read this twice now and it was still rewarding upon revisiting.
I am a passionate, albeit mediocre, recreational level tennis player. Self-taught in the sport, I lack any discernible style or classic strokes, but I have a strong appreciation for good tennis. So, as I watched the 2008 Wimbledon Men's Finals with awe, I knew instantly that I was seeing history in the making. That preliminary verdict has been affirmed and verified in a wonderful new book about the event written by acclaimed Sports Illustrated writer, L. Jon Wertheim.Werthein does a wonderful job of taking the reader through the unfolding events that occurred a year ago at Wimbledon. He adds spice and texture by weaving in back stories from the early lives and tennis careers of Federer and Nadal - the latest personal embodiments of the ages-old Athens vs. Sparta rivalry. On the surface, the grace vs. brute force analysis is a tempting one to endorse, but the styles of these two great players are not so easily distilled and deconstructed.Here is how Wertheim sets the stage in contrasting their divergent styles and personas:"Beyond the records, their rivalry was heightened by clashing styles. One could spend hours playing the compare-and-contrast game. Federer versus Nadal embodies righty versus lefty. Classic technique versus ultramodern. Feline light versus taurine heavy. Middle European restraint versus Iberian bravado and passion. Dignified power versus an unapologetic, whoomphing brutality. Zeus versus Hercules. Relentless genius versus unbending will. Polish versus grit. Metrosexuality versus hypermuscular hypermasculinity. A multitongued citizen of the world versus an unabashedly provincial homebody. A private-jet flier versus a steerage passenger. A Mercedes driver versus a Kia driver." (Page 4)This is a book that will delight even the most casual of tennis fans and everyone who has an appreciation for superlative levels of human achievement.Enjoy!Al
Well done! Reading this book is just as exciting as watching the game. The author does a fantastic job weaving in several story lines into this legendary game so that when you reach the climax you feel just as exhilarated and as fatigued as these two legendary tennis stars. An awesome read!
I'm no philosopher or philosophy major, but I enjoy the history of ideas. I'm very grateful to the editors at Penguin for making this highly readable introduction to the Cynics available to general readers. The anecdotes and sayings, especially those of Diogenes and Bion, really make you believe you are getting to know not just a philosophical doctrine but very memorable characters, even if some of the stories are apocryphal. I found myself laughing aloud at some of these characters' observations and stories and sharing them with family in the room.Reading about the men who took the "shortcut to virtue" will probably challenge you as well as amuse you, as well as raise the question: are these men crazy (Diogenes would be locked away for pulling his stunts today), or were they the only sane people around?Highly recommended.
This little volume covers the major figures of the Cynic school of philosophy (the opposite of modern "cynicism") well and at a cost a true Cynic would approve of. It provides, probably, the only fresh translations into English in decades and includes the rare fragments of the philosopher Teles which are usually neglected. Anyone interested in the philosophy of the Cynics, a philosophy that endured for nearly 800 years, and which stressed simplicity and living in harmony with nature will find this intriguing, perhaps enlightening, Well done, by a serious scholar.
This is what you should purchase/find for your self if you are interested in the Cynics. Unfortunately other copies are either not very good or are incredibly expensive (and I'm ignorant of their quality). This is inexpensive (as the Cynics would want it) and has great selections of their philosophy. The first I particularly find wonderful - almost a precursor to Anarchism or lifestyle Anti-Capitalism in a way.Great thinkers. Great edition of their work.
Makes you think, very entertaining. I don’t know how practical it is, but definitely sheds light on the ridiculousness of materialistic living
A nice introduction for the neophyte (me)
Well put together
TL;DR all these dudes just banged each other and pontificated. Anything Diogenes is literally just hearsay - no records exist.
Do we delude ourselves about happiness? The Cynics thought so. Named after the self-reliant and loyal animal they respected, the dog, they preached to and sometimes even harangued people they saw as misguided. They dismissed wealth, fame, consumerism and prestige as illusions that actually make people miserable. They wanted to live unencumbered by material things and societal norms that, they thought, limited pure human speech, thought and action. Though they flourished centuries ago, in Greek and Roman times, their ideas still resonate, or perhaps revolt, today. Many, though not all, actually lived their philosophies, often to still shocking extremes. Few 21st century people would attempt to follow their example, though perhaps a reality show could lure those hungry for fame to try, which would of course be completely antithetical to the spirit of Cynicism. Anyone who did try, at least in the industrialized world, would likely find themselves incarcerated or institutionalized. As such, the modern world seems to have rendered the Cynic lifestyle unfeasible. But this doesn't mean the Cynics have nothing to teach our highly technological and hierarchical society. Perhaps we remain deluded about our own happiness and need the Cynics now more than ever?Like most philosophies and ideals, Cynicism evolved over time. Though Diogenes of Sinope often stands as the movement's famous exemplar, many others answered the call and introduced variations and nuanced interpretations. Many studies of Cynicism exist, but reading the primary sources probably serves as the best introduction to this topic as the original texts remain accessible to general audiences. One great place to start is the unintimidating anthology "The Cynic Philosophers from Diogenes to Julian," which covers a few centuries of Cynic thinking, including its evolution and criticisms. It actually covers Antisthenes to Julian, but "Diogenes to Julian" probably makes for a more catchy title. The book's brief introduction outlines general Cynic thinking and principles along with short biographies of each Cynic covered. An interesting question about the affinity of Jesus with Cynicism gets raised, but then mostly dismissed as no proof exists of a direct influence. This short but conceptually thick introduction provides enough information to comprehend all of the subsequent primary texts. For the most part, these works remain highly readable, poignant, entertaining, sometimes dogmatic and often hilarious. They continue to speak for themselves centuries later. But the tone of the essays change as the anthology progresses.The first short dialogue, "The Cynic", attributed to Lucian, serves as a great starting point for learning Cynic ways. In typical dialogue fashion, the protagonist, named "Kynikos," prevails. Lycinus, the "normal" antagonist, challenges Kynikos' lifestyle and eventually gets reduced to silence, gradually steamrollered by Kynikos' increasing volubility. Along the way, Kynikos questions and reflects upon excessive luxury, satisfaction of one's needs, health, diet, greed, taking one's fair share, ambition and freedom. He claims that he meets his needs simply, doesn't intervene in the lives of others, enjoys good health, evokes Heracles and Theseus as Cynic exemplars and argues that he pretty much does what he wants to. Many of these same themes are explored and analyzed repeatedly throughout the book. In the end, the most revered Cynics incorporate Cynic principles into their very lives. To these people, Cynicism remains a life philosophy and not mere book knowledge. The ultimate Cynic lives Cynicism.Diogenes of Sinope, of course, has the longest section. But a short section on Antisthenes, Diogenes' theoretical predecessor, follows the initial dialogue. Most of the information comes from Diogenes Laertius and Plutarch, as many of the Cynics own works have not survived. Variations on the probably apocryphal meeting between Diogenes and Alexander the Great appear as do descriptions of the tub he lived in and the "unspeakable acts" he performed in public. Plato appears often. Once he tries to convince Diogenes that if he flattered Dionysius he would not have to scrape vegetables, to which Diogenes responds that if Plato were not too proud to scrape vegetables he wouldn't have to flatter Dionysius. Diogenes' capture by pirates and purported death by eating raw octopus also appear in multiple versions by various authors. Criticisms of Diogenes and Cynicism by Augustine and Johannes Chrysostomus included accuse the movement of simply trying to seek admiration and glory by unconventional means.Many readers may not have heard of the remaining Cynics: names such as Crates (who married Hipparchia, a woman who bravely led the Cynic lifestyle - the only know pure Cynic marriage - and yes, they also did things in public), Bion, Onesicritus, Demetrius, who refuses Caligula's offer of 200,000 in cash, and others follow. Some memorable lines appear (some attributed to multiple Cynics), such as Bion's observation on marriage that "if your wife is ugly, you'll be swearing, if she's pretty, you'll be sharing" and his quote on riches "He does not own a fortune, his fortune owns him." Many of the works originated as oratories on various subjects such as virtue, exile, freedom from passion, death, burial, humanity's fate or other Cynic themes. Teles tells the story of Diogenes responding to the claim that a city is expensive or inexpensive. Lucian tells a mocking story of a false Cynic, Peregrinus, who out of vanity ends up throwing himself on a pyre. Similarly, Epictetus mourns the passing of the true Cynic of days past. He seems to think the Cynics of his day were merely posturing. Lastly, the Emperor Julian, not himself a Cynic, defends Cynicism, Diogenes in particular, against criticisms of his day.This collection sums up Cynicism effectively, especially for a newcomer to this often misunderstood tradition. Reading the historical texts, rather than interpretations of them, gives the anthology an immediacy that secondary commentary sometimes lacks. Not only that, many of the themes will still seem relevant to 21st Century readers. And though no one is likely to take up pure Cynicism as a vocation after reading this book, it nonetheless presents a fairly sympathetic and rounded account of these peoples' motivations and mission. Many may identify with the arguments about the ultimate meaninglessness of fame and fortune and excess excoriated by the Cynics. Some may even see applications to the modern world and realize that some things haven't changed after millenia of "civilization." Nonetheless, the Cynics continue to present challenging questions to humanity, whether one agrees with their thinking or not. One of these questions still lingers: do we delude ourselves about happiness?
Review
"The authors have expanded their practical guide to CBM to include measures of multiple academic domains, including early literacy and numeracy, as well as the content areas. The book shows how CBM is an essential resource for implementing multi-tiered services and illustrates how to graph, interpret, and use CBM data to make important educational decisions. I am impressed by the expanded content, including more measures and a fuller explanation of CBM in the context of a functional assessment model. I am truly excited to make this text a centerpiece of the functional academic assessment course I will be teaching in the spring. Students will find practical, step-by-step administration, scoring, and graphing procedures; current benchmark standards and normative comparisons; and advice about data management systems."--Kathy McNamara, PhD, Department of Psychology, Cleveland State University "As schools continue to adopt multi-tiered systems of support, the use of effective progress monitoring tools such as CBM is critical to their success. This book is the most useful resource that I have seen to date for helping teachers implement CBM. It’s filled with reader-friendly explanations and detailed examples, and contains all the ‘whys’ and ‘hows' needed to use CBM effectively."--Charles A. Hughes, PhD, Special Education Program, The Pennsylvania State University "This is a significant revision of a widely used and respected text. Trainers and training programs should consider its use. It is the right introduction to CBM for educators."--Theodore J. Christ, PhD, Department of Educational Psychology and Director, Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement, University of Minnesota "This user-friendly 'how-to' manual is impressive in its coverage of CBM across age levels and academic areas. Given the extensions and developments in CBM over the past 10 years, the second edition is a welcome update. I recommend it as a reference for teachers, school psychologists, and administrators, or as a text for university classes on assessment, progress monitoring, or models of special services implementation, such as response to intervention or multi-tiered systems of support."--Christine Espin, PhD, Department of Special Education, Leiden University, The Netherlands “As a 'nuts and bolts' book, this is a direct and low-inference text with high-value results, just like the measures it describes. Read it and use it--because the instructional and curriculum decisions you make really do matter."--Edward J. Kame'enui, PhD, Dean–Knight Professor Emeritus, College of Education, University of Oregon
Tibet: The Secret Continent, by Michel Peissel
From Publishers Weekly
Who better to take readers on a journey through Tibet than someone who has led 26 expeditions into its vast expanses and even dreams in Tibetan? Peissel is an experienced explorer with a passion for Tibet and the Himalayas, and this book is the culmination of four decades of enthrallment. A land divvied up by India, China, Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan, Tibet holds the interest of many but the understanding of few; itÂ’s truly a "world within a world," Peissel writes. In its text, the book shifts easily from mythology, to flora and fauna, to PeisselÂ’s own adventure tales, to regional geopolitics, without breaking stride. But itÂ’s the photos (also courtesy of the author) that truly bring the land alive, capturing its cliffside cave cities, its vibrant ceremonies and its countless unforgettable faces. The only portion of the book that isnÂ’t exhaustive is its cursory discussion of TibetÂ’s brutal treatment under Chinese rule. For Peissel, whose love for Tibet is palpable, itÂ’s probably too depressing a subject to broach. 250 color photos.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.
Beautiful photos of Tibet, which are great for the project I'm working on.
This Himalayan explorer's renowned for his four decades in Greater Tibet. In 2002, this serves as a fitting survey of his twenty-six expeditions, and a teaser for his earlier narratives (reviewed by me) such as from "Mustang" in Cold War Nepal in 1964, a Bhutan facing India's intervention in 1970's "Lords and Lamas," and his stays with the Minaro ("The Ants' Gold") along Kashmir's forbidden zones in the early 1980s."Tibetan Pilgrimage" conveys with his watercolors and his architectural emphasis some of the same terrain. What this large-format collection of his photographs and reports adds is an overview of how the vast open territories, as he has it, demonstrate the youthful vitality and energy that has characterized this realm since it was united under the sixth-century Songsten Gampo around 650. After introducing the land, flora and fauna (pandas gain credit for their Tibetan origins), the people and society (ditto, polo), and the rise of the nation, the early medieval period ushers in the empire that burst forth.Peissel reminds us, if in gentler fashion than some passages in "Pilgrimage," of how later Tibetan progress towards a land wealthy enough to allow first sons to inherit land, but restricted in size and resources so as to steer second and younger sons to study at monasteries. Not cloistered, monks (maybe a third of the male population) were supported by their farming family's plots and in return often returned to help their siblings learn and harvest. This broadens perceptions of Western readers, who may too quickly transfer feudal models of the Church and fealty from Europe to Central Asia.He later critiques the Dalai Lama, starting with the Fifth, who started an unstable domination by Lhasa over the rest of Tibet, beyond the third of the terrain it ruled directly. A particularly lively chapter shows how the Europeans began to enter the guarded kingdoms, or how they tried to. Peissel emphasizes: "Tibet remained one of the few lands in Asia where the Westerners were neither gods nor masters." (172) The outer areas began to be taken over by British and independence-era India, Bhutan, Nepal, China, and Pakistan.Later sections unfold the collapse of the Tibetan kingdom. However, Peissel takes pains to present the Chinese side, and he rightly shifts no small blame to the imbalance of power that gave Lhasa and the Panchen and Dalai Lamas too much control, and too many pro-Chinese advisors who feared Britain as the alternative ally. Soon, Nehru's India was courted by the Communist Chinese to counter any politicking the Dalai Lama in exile might make.As one who witnessed the fate of the Khampa freedom fighters courted before abandoned by the CIA in Mustang during the Cold War, Peissel relates vividly the predicament of those caught on the ground and on borders who could not go along with the elite who appear to continue their "court intrigues" in Dharamsala. "Such people tended to have a greater concern for power and fortune than for prayer, and in the past they had taken their services to the highest bidders, be they Mongol, Manchu or Chinese." The present Dalai Lama by way of his allegiance to the same "monastic theocracy" does not escape diplomatic criticism for the "lack of foresight and for not having established sufficient links with the international community." (203)This tone infuses the near-present illustrations of Tibet poignantly and honestly. Peissel writes of his love for the people and their homeland, but he does not offer a soft-focus perspective in words or imagery. A couple small slips in proofreading (as in "Greek Marco Pallis" when that mountaineer turned mystic scholar was of Greek parentage but Liverpool-born; see my review of "Peaks and Lamas") do not detract from this volume's value. While parts may appear to gloss over his own encounters, they are often quick snippets gleaned from his past books reporting on regions. This book appeared before his death in 2011, more as a capstone for his career. He stays frank, and he lives up here to his life's ambition, to visit and share Tibet with us.While the language and largely Buddhist culture endures under pressures exerted all around its heartland by foreign powers, Peissel ends with guarded optimism for the survival of Tibetan mentalities and customs as its peoples realize the fate of the heartland and the frontiers is connected, by their vulnerability and their necessary flexibility--as its art and architecture symbolizes.
The author, who has explored the area for decades, writes about the geography, people, and especially the history of Tibet, considering not only the present-day boundary of Tibet but the surrounding Himalayan kingdoms that made up a broader, linked, unit. It’s an excellent book. It has some flaws – its treatment of recent history is very brief, and it occasionally has some typos and lapses of clarity – but I’ll give it five stars anyway because (i) its encompassing of “greater Tibet” is fascinating, (ii) its treatment of Tibetan history is clear, concise, and uncommon in books on this subject, and (iii) the photographs are wonderful. I’ve read lots of books on Tibet and nearby areas, and this is one of my favorites. 5 stars. Oct. 2015.
This book differentiates itself from others that I've seen and read about Tibet. If your looking for indepth political comentary on the Chinese-Tibetan struggle you won't find too much here. The focus of this book is more about giving you the reader a sense of the people, the place, and the history behind it.The book, though never going into vast detail, does a good job of presenting many aspects of Tibetan life and culture. It ranges from marriage customs to plateau animal and plant life. It brings together the detail and reliability of the scholar with the varied interests of the traveler. The other reviewer has remarked on the lack of personal stories. While I could see how here and there it might add something to this book, if that's what you're looking for why not go purchase a traveler's account? I personally perfer something a little more systematic and less prone to misinformation.Where this book really sets itself apart is in the respresentation of more outlying parts of the Tibetan kingdom, such as Ladakh, Guge, and Mustang. It is interesting to see how their interaction with other peoples has created physical and cultural differences. (I showed some of the pictures of these people to a Tibetan friend and he just said, "that is not Tibetan", lol).Lastly, but not leastly, there are beautiful pictures in this book. BEAUTIFUL! They are diverse, covering people, landscape, buildings, and some animals too. They are clear and bright, and alone merit the purchase of this book.
Another book by Peissel. This one, much to my syrprise, is atually quite good. Various aspects are presented in self contained chapters. It is also telling for what it doesn't say. For istance, Peissel writes he's been trekking Tibet for the last 40 years. I believe him, but where are his personal experiences in this book? Also he (almost)glosses over the Chinese invasion and the horrors that followed. I guess he needs a visa to visit Tibet in the future... Nonetheless, this is a wonderful book. Great photos and a succinct description oth the country. Well worth the time and money.
