I am well aware that I hold in my hands a national treasure, the product of a life well-lived, the "Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America." Its vinyl cover, its glossy pages filled with portraits of birds, not ordinary birds, but perfect birds, simply makes one catch her breath in awe.A celebrated illustrator, writer, ornithologist, and educator, Peterson directly followed Audubon's footsteps in depicting the birds of North America, but with two differences: his book is a field guide in identifying birds and he didn't kill them to paint them. Peterson worked by memory and sometimes the hull of an old dead bird or a photograph or two. His son Lee writes in the Foreword: "He was able to piece together an image of the bird as it should have been. Not just any [bird], but all [birds]" (x).The first thing I learned about birds when I began this new study is that they are the bellwethers of our environment. Peterson also "hoped to shift our relationship to our surroundings from one of exploitation to one of stewardship" (xi).As for content, Peterson goes into much greater detail in teaching how to identify birds than he does in his First Guides, designed for beginners.So, the list for bird identification:Size, shape, wing shape, bill shape, tail shape,Behavior, tree climber?, flight behavior,Wade? Swim?Field marks (one of Peterson's best bets for identification)Tail, rump, eye, wing markingsSongs and callsNestsRangesHabitatsOf course, I looked up my Cormorants and thought for a second my special species wasn't there, but, aha! turn one more page and there he is with wings outspread--my Double-crested Cormorant who winters every January with all his buddies in my huge cypress tree standing alone in the bayou behind my house. Actually, now I feel honored that this big beautiful bird spends time at my house, so to speak. Oh, get this: he is similar in species with the loon who produces my favorite bird call.Just how detailed is Peterson's Guide? In paging through the book I stopped at the Wren, described by Peterson as "mostly small, energetic, brown birds; stumpy, with slim, slightly curved bill; tail often cocked" (304). Here are six apparently quite similar birds, but Peterson's field guide arrows show us distinct differences:House Wren: longish tail, white spotted underbodyWinter Wren: very short tail, completely colored and striped underbodyBewick's Wren: white line over his eye and spotted lines underneath; solid white underbodyCarolina Wren: white line over eye but almost solid brown underneath, with faintly striped underbodySedge Wren: Stripes down top of head and eye and backMarsh Wren: Solid brown on top of head with white stripe above eye and the most clear white stripes down his backEven though the life history of each bird shows its range, there is a section in the back half of the book that provides more detail. The book closes with a Life list of all families under each of the 19 orders with blanks next to each one so that the birder and owner of the book can check off all birds spotted.Silhouettes of birds of the water, flight, and roadside conclude this guide; however, a photograph and short biographical sketch of Roger Tory Peterson looks over those silhouettes.

With my Nikon 200-500mm lens, I soon discovered a new interest - bird photography. I had never realized the variety of birds that were in my immediate vicinity. I started wondering what all these birds were. With the Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America, I immediately started to be able to identify the various birds that I was sighting. The book is very thorough and well done. The quality of the illustrations and printing is first rate. This book is definitely a keeper!

Roger Tory Peterson...great ornithologist, great conservationist, great artist. This book was everything I expected, and it's nice to know that the publishers took the trouble to update some of the late Mr. Peterson's information.I live in the Midwest and am a rank amateur as far as bird watching is concerned. Luckily, Chicago is on a flyway, and a lot of migrants funnel down to our lakeshore during fall migration. We also have great variety in habitat. So having a book that gives a thorough treatment of all species I will see in the vicinity is great. It's also detailed enough that, as I get better at identifying birds, some of the more nuanced field marks will come in handy.The book is kind of big--I had to choose between the entire North America guide and the Eastern North America guide. I got the more inclusive book because I want to have something to refer to when I travel West. But because of the weight/size (and frankly, because it is such a beautiful book) I will probably not drag it into the field with me. I have other guides I can use and write notes in, so this will be my at-home go-to reference if there's an unusual (to my eyes) wing bar or color morph.

I moved to Minnesota from NJ and I felt I needed a book that covered the entire US (even if the Eastern volume does cover almost any bird one will see in Minnesota). I purchased this a few days ago, and was not sure what to expect. I have rated this 5 stars because it is much better than expected. The price is very low for the quality of reproduction. My edition of Peterson was a 10 year old reprint of the 4th edition. The maps in that one were not that good at the time and after 30 years in print, they are out of date. The new combined edition has slightly larger pictures. The new maps are much better, including them on the bird pages is a plus. This edition keeps the map section in the back of the book so you can look at ranges of entire groups of birds at a time. This edition was designed, I am sure, to compete with Sibley's book. This book has borrowed some of the best of Sibley without losing the best of Peterson. If Sibley has a weakness it is in the somewhat muted colors of some birds. This works well for experienced birders but beginners will have problems. I feel Peterson's colors are a bit more accurate.Given the great praise for the Sibley book, one needs to remember that Peterson is just as good, just a bit different. This edition is completely updated. Any inexperienced birder would probably do better with the new Peterson. I have both books and use both books and I recommend both books.

I carry this in my car with me so I can use it whenever I'm out and about. I usually supplement with an iphone app such Merlin Bird ID until I get more familiar with local birds and where to find them in the book. It can be overwhelming to a new beginner such as myself to solely rely on a book. I use it as a reference once I've identified the most likely species from my phone app.

Bought this for my bird-watching granddaughter who is 8. She loves it. Especially likes the life list in the back so she can record sightings of birds. She also likes quizzing herself with the bird silhouettes. It's a fabulous book. (Grammy has one too!)

About the Author

Georges Dreyfus was the first Westerner to obtain the title of Geshe Lharampa, the highest degree confered within the traditional Tibetan monastic system. He earned his PhD in the History of Religions at the University of Virginia. He is presently Professor of Religion at Williams College.Sara L. McClintock is an assistant professor of religion at Emory University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism. She obtained her bachelor's degree in fine arts from Bryn Mawr College, her master's in world religions from Harvard Divinity School, and her doctorate in religion from Harvard University. She has spent time as a researcher at the Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath and the University of Lausanne, and has taught at Carleton College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her interests include both narrative and philosophical traditions in South Asian Buddhism, with particular focus on issues of metaphysics, hermeneutics, and rhetoric.

If you are philosophically minded and somewhat academically trained in the Buddhist epistemological and ontological systems, then you will find this collection helpful in furthering your understanding. If you are more interested in practice oriented texts or practical application of Madhyamaka to your mind, don't bother with this one.

{My thoughts} – Araminta has managed to upset Aunt Tabby in this book. She’s upset her to the point that she takes Uncle Drac’s mothers advice and enrolls her into a boarding school called Gargoyle Hall. Araminta had tried to do everything she could the night she was forced to leave, in order to change Aunt Tabby’s mind but all efforts were in vain.Once she got to the boarding school, she had to sign the the school registry and after that she was shown to her room and left to unpack. The great thing about unpacking was that Wanda had stowed away in her trunk so the two were at the school together.The next morning they were woken up by the two head girls and forced into the cellar to clean all the spiders and spider webs etc. That didn’t really bother then considering they came from Spookie House.While they were down there they were surprised by Mathilda, Araminta’s cousin, whom was apparently there to rescue them from the clutches of the two head girls whom they decided to Cal vultures. I have to agree with the name they chose for those two, it became rather fitting as the story progressed.It appears that Araminta had been enrolled as a last ditch effort to prevent the school from being closed. There seems to be some terrible beast that makes noises at night scaring off all the students as well as the way the vultures treated them during the day. Between the two things no one wanted to stick around.Do the vultures succeed in getting the school closed? Do they and the beast manage to scare off Wanda and Araminta? There are so many more questions you will be asking yourself as your reading, but these are the top two.I highly recommend this series for children that like paranormal reads that aren’t really scary. These are a lot of fun to read and you can knock them out in a couple of hours depending on your reading speed. I look forward to reading the newest book in this series soon.

My 6 year old loves the Araminta series, it actually accelerated her reading by so many levels, she could not wait for me to read them to her and she started reading the books by herself, she loves the way the characters' eyes popped out to the side and made so many drawings herself. One by one she has read out loud until the "Gargoyle Hall", she was a little disappointed by the pictures in the book - "they look just like any other kids books, i want their eyes to pop out". However, that did not last long, when the "Skeleton Island" book arrived she started reading it again. I would recommend this series to any kids who's fantasized by ghosts.

These books are always cute with humor that's perfect for elementary school kids. Araminta is in trouble (again) and manages, with the interference and recommendation of a great-aunt, to get sent to boarding school. Araminta fancies herself a detective in this volume and she is miffed that she has to leave behind a big mystery involving her Uncle Drac to go away to school. However she finds an even bigger and more spooky mystery at her new school. The mix of funny, scary, and friendship with Wanda is just perfect for young readers. The hilarious and beloved family ghosts make an appearance as do the bats that our heroine adores. I foresee future installments taking place at the new school, giving a new freshness to the series. This is very clever on the author's part, since boarding schools are a beloved theme with kids and there will be opportunities for new characters and spookiness. Can't wait for the next one--and neither will kids!

They are an eclectic bunch, like the Munsters or the Addams family. Araminta always has good intentions, but she is also rather “spirited” and her good intentions don’t always yield good results.In Gargoyle Hall, Araminta is sent off to boarding school. This frustrates her, because she was in the middle of solving two very important mysteries. As soon as Araminta arrives at Gargoyle Hall, she finds herself in the middle of an even bigger mystery. The students have been frightened away by a monster, so it is up to our intrepid detective to figure out where the monster came from and why it is causing such a ruckus.This was a very funny book. Sometimes children’s humor relies too heavily on insults and misfortune, but Angie Sage demonstrates that wry humor can be just as funny. Sage’s Araminta is just delightful, and reminds me of Clementine and Ramona. Araminta is clever, and she is a loyal friend. She embodies so many positive qualities, and although she is opinionated, she is not outright rude.I would absolutely recommend Gargoyle Hall. It manages to be scary in a fun and campy way, without being truly terrifying. This book is perfect for children in the early years of elementary school. My oldest daughter just finished second grade, and she also enjoyed reading Gargoyle Hall. We will definitely be going to the library to look for more Araminta Spookie books!I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I hate it, but I encourage you to read it. Hitler publicly thanked American eugenicists for their supposedly groundbreaking work, and this book will tell you why.

Margaret Sanger, publishing "Pivot" in 1922, was very prescient in realizing that democratic government and the economy would be threatened in the future since people with low levels of intelligence were reproducing rapidly and people with high levels of intelligence were reproducing slowly.However, Sanger's writing and organization skills in "Pivot" were not top-notch. And, talk of socialist economics (like claiming that economic production should be decreased so that America can be wealthier) did not make any sense.I regard this book as a classic despite the mediocre presentation because of the author's great influence as the founder of "Planned Parenthood" and because I respect anyone with the bravery to be outspoken on the need for eugenics.John Christmas, author of "Democracy Society"

This is a great book written by Margaret Sanger herself. Did you ever read those posts about how racist she was? Well it's all true and her own essays condemn her.She refers to blacks, immigrants, people of "low intelligence" as people who should never have been born ! Wow. And this is the founder of Planned Parenthood that make a profit from destroying innocent children in the womb. Most recently one of their top executives was caught red handed on tape how they sell baby body parts.This cesspool organization is funded by the government also. President Obama gave them $400m in government grants last year.....$400m.

A good insight into the motivation of Sanger and what she was trying to achieve. I did find it humanizing, and although I don't agree with all of her ideas (and many simply represented the thinking and science of the day) she was driven by compassion and the felt need to make the world a better place. So much of what is quoted of her is so taken out of context and used for various political stripes - it was nice to see what she said in context, and at the same time frustrating to see how often she is quoted so badly out of context.

Read this book to get a clear picture of the character of Sanger and her Eugenicist colleagues.

Beware, this pretends to be Margaret Sanger's book but it is not. It is vitriolic and has taken phrases of MS out of context, comparing her to the Nazis. I thought I bought her book and regret I paid any money for this. I am surprised Amazon even lists it as a Margaret Sanger book.

I HIGHLY recommend Crunchtime to anyone and everyone in law school. I would not have passed some of my classes without it.The Property crunchtime geared toward common law classes. I was in school in Louisiana and my course was based on Louisiana law so it was not as helpful as some of the other crunchtimes for me. I did however use this book to help me understand some of the more universal topics. It is an excellent resource for common law jurisdictions. However, if you're in La I'd skip this one. Good Luck!

It seemed everyone struggled with Property during my 1L year. I had used CrunchTime Contracts with great success, and I had high hopes for CrunchTime Property. I wasn't let down! All my CrunchTime books have six sections: Flow Charts, Capsule Summary, Exam Tips, Short Answer Questions, Multiple Choice Questions, and Essay Questions. The Capsule Summary and Exam Tips each have a Table of Contents so you can quickly flip to the section you need. All questions have explanations to the answers, including details about why other common answers (or, for multiple choice, available choices) are incorrect.If you're cramming at the last minute, you'll want to focus on the Exam Tips first, and follow up with the question types that will be on your exam. If you have time to read the entire book, I suggest you glance at the Flow Charts prior to reading the Capsule Summary ad Exam Tips. Before doing the exam questions, you should then go back and really study the flow charts. They are complex, but Property is a complex subject and simplified flow charts would be of no use to you.

I'm so glad I discovered these my first year of law school. They are very thorough and clear, yet not too long. Some of them contain nifty flow charts to help you attack questions; these were great for me because I learn visually. I did not use the included electronic feature, but I think it could be good for using Ctrl+f to find the topic you're looking for.

Very jarbled outline. I didn't use it but it may be helpful if you don't have any commercial outline.

Highly recommended for 1L's! It's the perfect crash course. You could almost, literally, miss class for the entire semester and study this book two weeks before the exam and do well! Outlines and Flowcharts are a PLUS!!!

I honestly have no idea how I would have made it through Property without this text. I enjoy Crunchtime in preparation for final exams in comparison to the Emanuel because this is essentially the black letter law without a lot of fluff and examples. I found this particularly helpful in trying to add to my outline for the class, especially since it was concise and to the point. It was also a lot less overwhelming because each page didn't have line after line of just information after information. The spacing was perfect, the concepts were easily simplified, the examples were relevant, and it was helpful enough for me to get a much better grade than I would have received based off my professor's lecture alone. Using this book has encouraged me to look to other Crunchtimes in preparation for final exams to get all the basic concepts down in one sit down review. I find this comparable and better than the Nutshell series by West and easier and more concise than Emanuel.

As the skeptical mate of a proud new VW Sand Rail owner, and as the one who is supportive when something goes wrong on nearly every excursion, and because I got tired of worrying and inwardly griping, I instead took action and found a book with some answers to my prayers. My guy had two other books, including the famous Idiot's guide from the '60s, but this one is his fallback for most repairs. Haynes guides have great photographs to show what they are talking about, which makes it easier for him. I like the fact that it covers every possible year of engines, because we won't know exactly what year this engine was made unless it gets stripped down to the heads... and KNOCK ON SANDRAIL METAL hopefully it'll never get to that point and we'll never really have to know, thanks to the thorough fix-it info found here.

Very good, great source of information and tech. Have bought three fix it books for VW and all have their pros and cons. I do suggest this book if you own a VW Beetle. This covers (with photos) just about every aspect of repair.

This book comes in handy in vw restorations and repairs . Good book, pics are black and white only. Together with Bentley's and Muir's a good companion.

This book covers VW Bug repairs from the 60s to the 70s. If you own a VW Bug from that period you will find a great deal of relevant information on how to fix your Bug yourself. Complete with easy explanations and clear photographs showing you every step, this is a gem of a book for do-it-your selfers.There are other books available, some excellent, some confusing and not very good. But the Haynes VW Repair Manual is one of the best. I would still recommend that you have this book on hand as well as one or two other VW Bug repair manuals. This way you can cope with every repair problem from every angle.

I borrowed a copy of this Haynes manual with the same Title, Haynes Book Number, and ISBN number. I liked it so I decided to buy a copy for myself. When I received this book, I found it was different because it did not contain most of exploded views as the borrowed copy and there were about 30 - 40 less pages. My guess is that Haynes wanted to reduce their publishing cost. The seller met all of my expections.

Very comprehensive manual-not pretty mind you; it's printed inexpensively and the print is small for us old folks but this book is very detailed-I place it somewhere between John Muir's book and the Bentley manual which is probably the best book for VW repair. Frankly though, between the Muir book (which is a MUST have) and this one, it's all you really need.

Always a good reference

Buy all brands of repair manuals for your vehicle, there may be a description in one or photo that clears up confusion in the other. Very useful if you do any of your own maintenance and minor, medium and even major repairs. Have bought Haynes manuals for every vehicle I've owned, but get the others too. They will end up supplementing each other equally! For VW be sure and get How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive as well.

This book covered all the topics I needed to know about and then some, with just the right amount of detail and to the point information. A quick read and organized by the steps I needed to take as I approach the big day. Lots of good insider tips and information from the author, who obviously has a lot of experience tackling the myriad of things we have to plan for in our role as Mother of the bride.

I purchased this book because my daughter recently became engaged and we are trying to plan the wedding by the end of the year. It took me about an hour to read/skim this book. There isn't anything in here that you do not already now. Also, it is pretty much outdated. In 2019 etiquette is much more relaxed and parents are assuming more financial responsibility by contributing as needed for the wedding and other associated activities such as the bridal shower.

This book provides a good amount of information, but isn't exactly what I was looking for. I'd like a book that serves more as a workbook with checklists.

I hardly ever used it. Brides have their own ideas, and the best thing a mom can do is just support their daughter's plans. Weddings have changed a LOT since we moms were married.

Purchased this as a gift for my mom and she loves it! There is a ton of great information in it though some is a bit dated. MOST of it is relevant and includes a lot of detail around Wedding etiquette, who pays for what and all of those tiny details you never thought of prior to planning a Wedding. I would definitely recommend as a great gift idea for any MOB.

Absolutely nothing new here. I was very disappointed. Buy "A Practical Wedding" by Meg Keene instead.
