Look, I don't cook. At BEST I sometimes take the "oven reheat" option on frozen meals. But I bought and enjoyed this book because:1. Food Porn: The stuff in here all looks disturbingly delicious. Sometimes I don't want to like what I'm seeing but I like it anyway.2. Humor: This book is funny. You'll laugh and look at food and then laugh some more and then order-in because you don't cook and it'll be a great Friday night I swear.3. The Author is Totally Not Fat: Seriously--he's looking good. Seeing someone who cooks this stuff not just get perpetually fatter until he can't get out of bed anymore made me feel good about myself. "Maybe there's hope for me one day" you might say after reading this book. How many books have really given you hope?Rebellions are built on hope.Honestly I never got the hype around Rogue One. It somehow manages to reach into the future movies (The original trilogy) and make them WORSE. Seriously. Isn't that the one thing a prequel shouldn't do? Now we know that Leia's "I'm on a diplomatic mission" line was pretty feeble huh?Buy this book though it's better than Rogue One.

"When I talk about chugging beers and drunk cooking in the middle of parties and making obscene foods that most rational people would consider Abominations of God, it's important that you know it's not for shock or effect or novelty. In no superficial way these are the happiest most important moments of my life."Yeah I used his own words to review his book, but I mean, it's a pretty perfect summation. It's bro-y in the best way. It's hilarious. It's passionate. It's genuine. And a goddamnit it's nostalgic.I've never felt this strongly about a cookbook. 5 stars.

This book is the perfect storm: beer, pork products, nostalgia, and heart. I don't know what I was expecting from a Culinary Bro-Down book, but I found myself engaged by the author's voice. Not only do the recipes induce food babies, but I could tell that this book was the author's food baby---conceived during raucous parties with great friends, with a sprinkle of his original take on food. He manages to bring humor and food together into a surprisingly refined, greased-up-fever-dream collection of stories and recipes. I can't wait to try out every recipe with friends (and light beer)!

Josh Sherer is a mad genius. His recipes are concoctions one would never think to put together, but somehow they work! Also the dude is funny! I first became aware of Josh from his segments on Good Mythical Morning, where he makes recently expensive versions of popular food items(ie; Big Mac, Chic-fil-a sandwich, etc) and when I found out he wrote a cookbook, I had to get it. I'm glad I did..it's a treat, plus I wanted to do my part toward feeding Josh's cats.

People often describe one cookbook or another as reading like an engaging piece of literature. Mostly, those people are lying. But it's true about this cookbook. It is a work of comic literature and one can just sit down and happily read it from beginning to end. It will make you smile for sure and you may laugh out loud. I recommend buying it even if you do not have a kitchen or a hot plate and take all your meals out. But if you do have a kitchen, and a working mouth, I have two words for you: Cheeseburger Pudding (page 34).You can thank me later.

So, I thought if this Josh guy can come up with the most unimaginable concoctions on Good Mythical Morning, then this cookbook has to be interesting. Within the first couple of pages I was laughing so hard that I couldn't stop! Awesome book. I'm definitely going to share it with my friends!

I laughed, I cried, I woke up in a stranger's bed. But now I'm home, brogurt parfait in hand, the horns of "2am" blasting through my Amazon echo against Alexa's best wishes. A fantastic cookbook full of recipes that take the guilty out of "guilty pleasure". But the honest writing and quality photography make the reading experience seem more like Scherer is right there with you in the kitchen, telling you when exactly to turn that steak 90 degrees as he turns his how now-empty can of Natty Light upside down over his head to remind you that he is the alpha male.

This may well be the best cookbook ever. It's definitely the best cookbook that will make you laugh and actually have you fully engrossed in the stories. Amazing off the wall recipes that really make you want to create something you haven't tried before. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to try some recipes that challenge the norm, or just read some dope stories and look at delicious pictures that will make you hungry.

I've read all of the books by Kiyosaki. This is the best for content as it reviews all of his other books information. Just buy this book and pass on ALL his other ones, it'll save you some money. I read one of the other reviews and it mentioned he needed to get a better proof reader. I thought maybe the reviewer was just picky, but after reading this book I know what they mean. Misspelled words, missing words, etc. Lost count after 10 mistakes. Worst book for mistakes I've ever read. The content is good, so I'd recommend it. I hope Robert Kiyosaki reads this review and corrects the errors. Nothing worse than reading a good book with lots of errors.

Gave it to my dad before telling him my grades after a particularly lethargic semester of college. I would definitely recommend this to any student who is worried about not getting the best grades. Always good to remind parents that grades are not the most important thing.

Gives guides how to deal with your credit card debt. Good strategies there. Pay minimum on all cards, then choose one that you will close and double or triple payment (whatever you can). Then once closed, repeat the process with the next card, while adding the payment from the first (closed card) to boost effect. Repeat until you are credit card debt free.

I have had a total paradigm shift in my thinking after reading this book. Now I am educating myself in how to invest and not just in RRSPIf you want to get out of the rat race and begin a path towards financial freedom then this book will give you fresh insight and new ideas.

My wife feels there's security in a job. Shes always been an employee, and thinks thats the right thing to do. It's taken alot of time and effort even through our many successes of owning businesses and rental real estate. She does finally see the rewards from the effort. Also she has had alot of friends whom can't find work even after getting college degrees. Alot of her co-workers have $10's of thousands of college debt making only $12-14 an hour, because thats all they can get. I am so glad that you help guide and educate us that there is another way. Financial education is so important for the world right now with everything thats going on. Please keep the books coming as I am one of your biggest fans...

This is a brilliant read. Even if you saw the movie first, that's OK, this book will far exceed the quality of the movie. I appreciate Read's attempt to be as straightforward as possible. There is no reason for an author to try and add emotion or tension to this story, since it was all there in the first place. There are some disturbing moments in the book (as expected), but nothing graphic. I appreciate Read's respect toward the faith those people had in God. Another reviewer said very little was dedicated to the actual crash. That's true. And after finishing the book, I can see why. What happened afterward was far more important than the actual crash. Amazing story. They thought they would be rescued since people knew they were flying. But they were never found. So they decided to save themselves. Amazing story. One of the greatest achievements in human history.

I read Miracle in the Andes by Nando Parrado, one of the survivors before reading Alive. Nando was one of the two survivors that somehow hiked to safety and thus saved the rest. His book was written many years after the event. Alive was written within a few years of the crash by Piers Paul Read who interviewed many of the survivors. Both books are excellent. I slightly prefer Parrado's book. If you have never read the story, read one of these books. It is an incredible story.

Alive was a riveting read. The details of each survivor's experiences in the Andes, their lives before the crash, and after their rescue caused me to question my own abilities, ethics, social skills and leadership abilities. The organization and discipline these men exhibited under the worst possible conditions was mind blowing.

My God !!..This is such an outstanding book. I met Mr.Gustavo Zerbino in january, 2005 during a meeting he held in the company I used to work for. He talked about his experience on the mountain for about an hour and he covered many details related to how much they did to survive up there. Since that time, I became so interested in getting to know much more about this real story, therefore I decided to purchase this book. There are so many details in it that Mr Zerbino couldn't talk about due to time reasons, then, by reading Alive, I could picture what those guys suffered there on the mountain in a way as I was right there. Most of the chapters are really tough to read, but it is a way we can learn about the experience accurately. I really recommend it 100 % !!. I am looking forward to read the books written by Canessa and Nando Parrado very soon. Thank you.

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I saw a documentary on the event on the history channel and knew I had to read the book. I'm ashamed to say I waited so long because this is an great read. I finished the book within a few days because it was just so hard to put down. The story of these gentleman is truely amazing. You will have a different outlook on life after reading it.

what a heartbreaking story but I just couldn't stop until had to sleep. The horror of it all and what they had to do to survive, bad luck just seem to be with them. They would survive one thing only to go on and almost not survive another tragedy. Ended up so enthralled with this story, I watched it on Netflix the next day. The book bought the visual more than the movie but both were very good.Cherie'

I have read this book more than a few times. My paperback is quite worn so I decided to get it on my kindle. Much easier to read on tablet rather than a book. My husband still loves the feel of a book in his hands but I would rather have it on my kindle. A very inspiring story of faith and resilience. I! Still amazed at how they survived such obstacles. It will always be one of my favourites

I know most people have seen the movie and think they know enough, but this book has always been important to me, understanding just how people function in such a horrible situation. Problem is, I kept lending my copy to friends, enthusiastically, and not getting it back. Then it was out of print. Finally I found it here!It came ahead of schedule by a couple of weeks and is even better condition than what was advertised. I won't loan THIS copy to anyone. I recommend the seller (and the book!)

This is a fantastic book. Unique look at human interaction and reaction. The spider story is quite something. Writers should read this book.

Spider Speculations provides excellent guidelines about how to collect personal stories from people, and the attitude that I should have in going about it. The attitude that I have in collecting is one of optimism and gratitude. I learned that my intention could affect the outcome of the story collecting process.I have been tasked to collect stories from the foster care population in Hawaii by Playbuilders Theater Company of Honolulu. I have been working with them in community plays since 2011. This is for a community based play that will be performed in 2017. Jo Carson touches upon the idea of finding memes in a personal story. A meme is anything with that has a cultural significance to a person. I have lived with cerebral palsy all my life, and I have been tasked to interview a young man with cerebral palsy for my upcoming play. Cerebral palsy is a congenital neurological condition that affects my balance, coordination and general movement. I can extrapolate from Jo Carson that living with and having the same disability as another person is a meme, because it is something we both have to deal with daily.The ability to reframe a story is something I also learned in this book. To reframe a story is to give a story a different perspective. Reframing is important when a story is painful. I will probably have to reframe the story that I will be told to give it some hopeful value.Jo Carson discusses the idea of agency. How agency relates to theater is insightful information. I have never heard this term used before, and I believe that it will be helpful to me in collecting stories. Giving agency to a character on the stage can be something as simple as expressing a personal opinion making a life altering decision. Giving agency simply means giving that person the freedom to act on their own behalf.I am motivated to collect stories and to try to craft them into a play because of this book. I have no established expectations about the story gathering and story telling process, but I think that having an attitude of gratitude is a great starting point. Having an attitude of gratitude will probably make it easier for people to share their personal stories with me.

I have loved Jo Carson's work for some time -- uplifting, enriching, energizing, transformative. This latest book offers all of that -- and more.....much more! I expected a book jammed with boatyard production statistics, management flow charts and a chronical list of achievements for a small successful company. Surprisingly, I found little of this. Instead I became fascinated by the stories of a time in American history when people of mettle were not afraid to take chances, grab at opportunities, quickly associate with able friends or foes, manipulate the politicians and financiers of the day to accomplish unthinkable heights of achievement. Once the word was out, these people were on the short list of every major organization, public and private, as a small-enough, can-do, no-nonsense, efficient engineering group that can be counted on for the toughest task. Sounds easy, but in real life this is tough to do. Mr. Mattingly, in a delightful narrative, introduces the reader to a seemingly unending list of quirky oil field characters, shipbuilders, politicians, bankers and scientists who instinctively knew how to communicate with each other. Today's movers and shakers would benefit from reading this short book that enlightened me to these now old fashioned methods.

My good friend Paul Mattingly’s book From Orange to Singapore is a fact filled history of the Livingston Shipyard which thrived for about 60 years in Orange, TX. My father was a member of a construction crew sent to Orange in 1943 to build the huge Riverside housing project required to support the naval base and 3 shipyards. We lived about ¼ mile from the shipyards and during WWII the traffic, lights and noise were always present as thousands of workers labored 24/7 to support the war effort.While in High School, I had the good fortune to work two summers at Livingston and really appreciated and benefited from the shipyard’s support of local students. After obtaining a mechanical engineering degree, I had a much better understanding of Livingston shipyard’s superb technical talent. In addition to the design and fabrication of ocean-going tug boats and New York City ferries, they were pioneers in the design and production of the first ever off-shore drilling platforms.Paul has documented many facts that I was not aware of about Livingstone’s history, personnel, policies, technology, business relationships and accomplishments. He also describes in great detail the shipyard’s role in developing the Howard Hughes backed Glomar Challenger research vessel. Overall, his book is a great addition to our library.

How did a tiny boatyard in Orange, Texas -- many of whose early employees were so illiterate it had to run its own school to teach them to read and follow plans -- turn into the yard that built the best tugs in World War II? That became one of the leaders of the offshore drilling industry? That established what is today the leading builder of offshore drilling vessels? Paul Mattingly knows how it happened because his father was one of the men who ran the company, and Paul knew the rest of them. It's an amazing story of a heartening slice of American industrial history.

Mattingly makes learning history fun. The book is a treasure. He has done an incredible job on his research and gives credit where credit is due. I laughed and even teared up a few times. I know Paul's father is proud of him for writing and preserving this part of history. What a tribute to Livingston, the Golden Triangle, our Cajun neighbors, and the men of vision who have made these good things happen. I wish the book had been longer. Knowing Paul he has a lot more stories squirreled away.

As much time as John Tytell has spent with Beat writers and artists, it is understandable that he would return to the topic twenty years after first publishing Naked Angels. That book is one of the best early references on the lives and works of Ginsberg, Kerouac, and Burroughs--fully informed by Tytell's scholarly research and interviews with Beat figures. If there is one criticism of Naked Angels, it is that the book has begun to show its age as more and more important biographical and critical discoveries are made regarding the Beats (for instance, Kerouac's letters and journals--and the publication of Some of the Dharma). With Paradise Outlaws, Tytell has taken the opportunity to update--and in some cases expand on--his work in Naked Angels. The result is something of a companion to the first book, with the Kerouac-Ginsberg-Burroughs sections shortened substantially and the academic tone removed. Tytell compliments this approach with first-hand accounts of his relationships with Beat figures (accompanied by photographs by his wife, Mellon). By doing this, he has created a personal book, a "My Life With and Studying the Beats." It is a unique perspective that stands out in the current glut of Beat books.Tytell's first-person, casual writing gives Paradise Outlaws the feel of a conversation more than a lecture. With this in mind, the book should not be read as a critical study of the Beats, rather as an oral history. (Tytell even recommends Jack's Book: an oral biography by Barry Gifford and Lawrence Lee to reinforce his approach.) While it seems, at times, that Tytell and Mellon tossed in photographs for no reason and tried to make them fit with the Beat theme, it's hard to find fault considering the book is based on Tytell's own experiences and opinions. Who's to argue if he thinks the "Rainbow Family" is a descendent of Beat culture?Finally, Tytell concludes the book with a fantastic section on pedagogy. References to and recommendations of source material from a Beat student with the experience and knowledge of Tytell should be taken seriously. My only complaint is that his final section--the Beats influence on pop culture--is typically narrow. All the allusions to punk music reminded me of The Rolling Stone Book of the Beats. Tytell, of all people, should give the Beats more credit for their influence and dig a little deeper into the social fabric to find the true cultural legacy of the Beats. But this is a small criticism of a book that belongs on the shelf of any person who has found themselves captured by the humanity and personal nature of the Beats. Tytell's book would make his Beat friends proud.

The good thing about this book is that it's neither a thick boring pedantic tome, nor a fluffy coffeetable picture book. The photographs are personal and real like a family album with a great photographer in the house. And then there's the text which I liked because even though I'm pretty familiar with the subject matter, Tytell's one of those encyclopedic professor types that can retain all these different facts at once and then weave them in together. Like that Larry Rivers lived on West 21st, and would hear Bill Cannastra's parties on West 20th and go over, and that's where Rivers joined up with Jack and Allen for the first time - in the very apt. where Jack would soon write On The Road. There are all of these interesting little details sprinkled in with a friendly big picture take, coincidently framed by all the pictures Mellon took. There's Cherry Valley in the 70's, Boulder in 82, and NYC in the mid-to-late-90's that really gives you a great perspective on the gang growing up. Yeah - perspective - that's what this has - great perspective! Read on!

No bad thing for that necessarily but it is very much John Tytells personal history /involvement and memory of the beat movement.Good photos which help and Tytell is good himself on the analysis and worth of the beat literature itself.Neal Cassidy ? There are references but no pics as I recall.{Could have included an old snap or two I would have thought -the same goes for JK himself }. As Cassidy was at the very least the subject not to say the muse of the best of Kerouacs work { and was feted by Ginsberg , Kesey as well }he ought to have been discussed more. One wants to see the pics of course of what the beats looked like in later life { even if they are of old men with oxygen masks }but earlier snaps would have made a good contrast.Glad to have read it anyway.

This is an interesting book and a nice overview of modern health science and medicine. But it's promise to provide useable knowledge about how to extend life and health in "the lucky years" isn't really borne out. It's aspirational and points to coming developments in stem cell treatments and personalized medicine. But those parts of the book are a small fraction of the total. In short, I expected a lot more detailed manual on how personal habits and knowledge combined with recent medical breakthroughs would allow me to reasonably expect to dramatically increase my life span and my quality of life. And this the book doesn't do.

I bought this hoping for an update or additional information on healthy living. That's not really what this book is about. I would say this is more textbook than anything. It talks about studies and the direction and future of medicine, not really anything new about healthy living. if you read "A Short Guide to a Long Life" there is really no new information from this book.The book is fine from an education standpoint, but not a stand alone book about personal health.

Once again Dr Agus doesn't disappoint. This book offers powerful insights into understanding your own health and wellness. His style is reader friendly and offers excellent proven advice that even the best primary care physicians do not address with their patients. I have read his other books multiple times and have followed his recommendations which has lead to me feeling and looking healthy, energetic, and youthful. Thank you Dr Agus!

i am a physician and i find dr agus's books informative and easy to read. he applies the concepts of research to actual day to day living. I'm a huge fan. I refer to his book multiple times a day when speaking with patients in my practice and I also try to follow his advice personally. Great book.

Book starts off really well - and references a number of recent findings that are relevant.References are well documented etc.However, it gets quite preachy and unfocused towards the end.Might have been better for the author to end on a more practical note than "know thyself".

I was so looking forward to getting the most up to date information and using it to create a plan for good health. Instead I got the same old ideas wrapped up in lots of boring research. Eat well, sleep well, take aspirin, take a station and live a long time. Heard this information for years.

An excellent, in-depth,optimistic book on health, disease, and healthy lifestyle habits. What I especially enjoyed was that Dr. Agus explained why things are healthy or not, and how things interact in the body. For me, it's not enough to know that something is healthy or not; I need to know the whys. Fascinating and inspiring. A good read with lots of healthy tips and inspiring information on the strides medicine is making and the potential cures in the works.

I have recently been diagnosed with cancer, and I saw Dr. Agus on a talk show, and he was so interesting that I wanted to buy his book. This book is so full of information, and I have learned so much about cancer that I never knew, and that information is going to help me when discussing my treatment with my Doctor. I would advise everyone, whether healthy or sick, yo read this book. It is so informative, and I'm passing it down to my daughter to read, in order to help with prevention in her generation.

I downloaded this so that I could have a copy of Robert's Rules of Order in our school board meetings but it is practically useless. This is NOT the most recent 11th edition. It is the ninth and the contents, format, pages, etc. are completely different. So when you are in a meeting with that one snotty person that likes to quote Roberts and has the paperback edition, they will be able to find stuff faster than you AND they will say that their version rules because it is the most recent. Really puts you at a disadvantage to have this Kindle version.

Don't buy this version. Worst product I have ever bought from Amazon, and worst book I have ever bought anywhere. Looks like something produced by a kid and never proofed before printing. It does a disservice to a revered resource. Pretty cover, but you know what they say. I'll have to find another version somewhere.....

This book was not at all what I expected. From previous reviews, it appears that different versions of the book are available under the same heading. When I first opened the book, I thought the initial pages were errata for what followed but the entire book seemed to be some kind of annotation or perhaps abbreviation. This book does not have a table of contents or index, so trying to find something in the book is practically impossible. Unfortunately, I did not look at the book as soon as I got it nor did I need the reference within the first 30 days of ordering it so cannot return it. If you decide to order this book, be sure to look at it as soon as you get it so you can return it if you got the same version I did. I have learned my lesson and hope I can prevent someone else from making the same mistake. Now I will have to spend more money getting the right text but, this time I will go locally so I can be sure I am getting what I need. This one will go in the trash because that it all it is good for.

We bought this for our pastor to help him with an easy version of Roberts Rules of Order. It's a very nice condensed version of the basics you need to know to conduct a meeting. I liked it and will order another one for my husband. It's much better for a refresher course than than the big book. It tells everything you need to know in a short and precise format. Very handy.

Compared to my old copy (which was falling apart and had the corner chewed by a puppy), the new version is totally disorganized, the so called index is a mess and practically unreadable. It seems as if someone had the bright idea of "modernizing" it to make it more readable by attempting to clump like subjects together. Instead of moving in an organized systematic method all they did was make a mess.

I wanted the whole thing, the complete book, but this is the "pocket guide." If you look hard enough on the web page for this item, you will see that it is the "Pocket Manual of Rules of Order for Deliberative Assemblies." I didn't look hard enough before I bought it, but I should have figured the entire book wouldn't be available on Kindle for $0.99 when the paperback is $12. If it was the whole book for Kindle it would have been about $10! Fortunately, I figured it out before my 7 days were up and I was able to return it. Maybe you'll read this and save yourself the trouble.

This Kindle version of Robert's Rules of Order lacks a copyright page and an edition page necessary to authenticate it as the authoritative version for use at a meeting. Until these issues are corrected, purchase is a waste. Each edition brings changes and no one wants to stand up to argue a point only to have someone else observe aloud that you haven't bothered reading the most recent edition which changed the rule governing your argument or point. Save your money until the most recent edition is formatted for Kindle.

Anyone having responsibility to preside over meetings in a variety of settings should have a copy of this book. In it you will find the help and advice needed to prepare properly, and officiate properly. The result will be a well-run meeting that actually accomplishes something in a reasonable time. I give 5 stars also to the seller for fair price, fast delivery, and a book in very good used condition as advertised. Can't ask for much more. ps: It's also a good idea for meeting attendees to be familiar with Roberts Rules, so as to be enabled to offer corrections/suggestions when meetings begin to get out of control and "off-topic".

Randy J Paterson, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and the Coordinator of Changeways, a depression treatment program at Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and associate faculty in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Colombia. Dr. Paterson has taught over 1200 therapists in the course of more than 100 training seminars on topics such as assertiveness training, depression, and stress management.

I was looking for a good step by step guide on how to become more assertive. A lot of books on the topic talk about the psychology behind a lack of assertiveness, which is not helpful to those who understand the root of a lack of assertiveness but want to get to the next step of being more assertive. I was happy to see this book was the how-to book I was looking for. I liked this flow of this book. Most helpful is the chapter on the script to use (DESO) to confront someone. The earlier chapters lead up to this script by explaining and using examples of assertive vs aggressive, passive, and passive-aggressive behavior.

Randy J. Paterson has helped me so very much with this workbook. I suffered from people-pleasing and cowering around people who I thought were more important than me (because of a psychologically abusive parent and the other parent was also abused by them). I could never live up to anything with this parent and even my accomplishments were tarnished in their eyes. This workbook has helped me break free from the chains of abuse. I cannot believe it!! He is so insightful and provides practical solutions. I finally realized that I am in control of myself and that others are not in control of me. For me, that was a real breakthrough. Thank you so much for this book.

I love this book. I really related to a lot of the material in it. I have always struggled with standing up for myself and my ideas and this book, I think might help me. I'm not sure it's working to be honest but all of the advice seemed very practical and down to earth. I think if you do the exercises in the book, your ability to stand up for yourself and make your way through work and relationships will improve.

A helpful digestible book in easy English and a sense of humor packed but with an educational punch. This book has changed my life for the better.

I am a passive codependent and I am learning very successfully to become assertive as a result of doing the work in this workbook. The chapter entitled "Overcoming the Belief Barrier" quickly taught me how misinformed I was about what assertiveness is and is not. I saw my own past beliefs outlined in the "Beliefs That Support a Passive Role" exercise. I quickly learned how wrong my impressions and understandings were about what it means to be assertive. The "Reality Check" that Chapter 5 offers quickly suggested to me that I need to lay my victim role aside when the it stated the "Key Point: You are in charge of your behavior; others are in charge of their behavior." The "Reality Checklist" in that chapter was also very helpful. The "Strategies for Saying No," "Barriers to Saying No,""Assertiveness Scorecards," and scripting exercises in preparation for facing a confrontation where all very, very helpful to me in my quest to become assertive and to stop practicing my conflict-avoidant, passive codependent behaviors. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to become more assertive. [...]

Great book for introverts. I wish I'd have read this in my 20's.....

I CANNOT recommend this book highly enough. Of course you actually have to do the work, but this book and it’s practical advice has made a real difference in my relationships.

It is my experience that few people have strong communication skills -- are capable of gracefully disagreeing, giving opinions, asserting boundaries, confronting people. Most of us either go along with others, try to pacify, avoid confrontation and never say "No," (the passive style) or we boss others around, intimidate them, and force them to give in to "our way" (the aggressive style). There is also the passive-aggressive style which attacks indirectly in order not to take responsibility -- by forgetting, having "accidents," being late, or being slow in responding to a request agreed to. AND sometimes, hopefully more and more, we use the assertive style. The essence of assertiveness is assuming responsibility for your own behavior and acknowledging your thoughts and preferences honestly while also respecting the feelings and opinions of others. Paterson notes that each of these styles is used by all of us at one time or another; and we each have a style we use most.The book is an excellent handbook which will increase your awareness of yourself and others in all interactions. Further, the author guides you step by step into increasing your flexibility of responses. First, Paterson has assessments for determining which of these four styles you use most. He also explores how we learn these behaviors and when it is appropriate to use each. Beginning with the easiest situations in your own life, you start practicing the assertive style. One of my favorite exercises was called: A Walk in Town. The idea is to practice overcoming passivity by the way you walk. You use a favorite actor or dancer as a model of confidence. The best guide for me was: let your chest enter the room first, not your nose. Although the subtitle of the book emphasizes overcoming passivity, this book is also for those who are overly aggressive. Aggressive persons might be less likely to perceive a problem, but overuse of the aggressive style usually indicates a fear of being out of control and tends to keep us distant from others. This book is a fine resource for personal relationships, for work situations, or conflict management. It is readable, workable, and fun.
