This book deserves five stars because it is a perfect baseball uniform book. Todd Radom has all the depth of knowledge you need to discuss this history. But he writes as a fan and child of the 70s. He discusses why the colorful uniforms of the 70s developed, how the trend expanded and why they ultimately went away. He is honest rather than nostalgic about the lack of color in the iconic uniforms of the 50s and carries the narrative beyond the 90s. His love of the crazy double knit era is clear. The thing that puts this book into the five star range though is that he chronicles when good teams make bad decisions (I'm looking at you Pirates Red uniform) and has an entire chapter on the "Turn ahead the clock night" of the late 90s. This is legendary among uni-fans. Radom appreciate the zany creativity of the idea and provides beautiful pictures. In fact the whole book is beautiful, a work of art in and of itself. If you love baseball uniforms or pine for the sans-a-belt pants and pullover shirts of the 70, this is a must have.

Although it had some redeeming qualities, it was disappointing. My main bone of contention was with the photos and illustrations. To begin with, they were not placed near the text on them and next they were insufficient. Many uniforms were discussed in the text that were not shown either by photo or illustration. Often I found myself reading text about a certain uniform but never was shown an image of it. Many sounded very interesting. Granted, the author could not be expected to show every memorable uniform, but at least show the ones in the text. This is theoretically a visual book so visuals should be abundant. Having to go online to look up many of the uniforms described was annoying and should have been unnecessary. I saw the author in High Heat on MLB network and it whetted my appetite for the book. As I said, disappointing.

Ever get the feeling that a book was written especially for you?I was looking forward to this since I heard about it, having owned two of the jerseys feature in the inside covers: Astros and brown Padres. I also lived in Philly when the team changed jerseys, logos and stadiums in 1970. Too bad the winning didn't accompany them in those days.Only wish Winning Ugly had more pages, photos and illustrations to enjoy. Wonderful use of cultural references (Nigel, DeLorean, Cookie Puss) to add color to an already heavily saturated story. I’d say Todd Radom is uniquely qualified for this creation. If you love baseball history combined with the visual aspect, be sure to check out Todd's work online. Top drawer designer, master of typography, ultimate baseball fan.

Good for kids or sports enthusiasts . My husband loves this, he really loves the history of sports uniforms and logos so gets a kick out of the photos in this book. My 11-year-old is equally fascinated by the book.

I got this for my husband. The added bonus was it kept my two young grandsons entertained for hours!

Bought this for my husband for Father's Day and he absolutely loves it!! He loves all things baseball and history and this book really delivered on both! He had fun showing me and the kids the pictures!

My 8 year old needed to do a project for school and we chose Cleopatea. I thought it was nice to actually own the nonfiction book do we got this one. She enjoyed it immensely. Didn’t even notice the nude pictures do that wasn’t an issue for us.

This book was informative and well written. I have used it in ESL education. The students learn the tragic story of Cleopatra and how her life intertwined with two of the most powerful leaders of Rome. It's a great starting point for discussions about the ancient world.

Great book for those that are interested in learning more about Cleopatra. Purchased for a gift for my daughter for Christmas and she has read it many times and loves sharing her new knowledge with us. Very pleased.

Our 7 year old is SUPER into ancient Egypt history and this is a good one on Cleopatra. Very age appropriate (sometimes hard to find regarding ancient Egypt history!) Fun to learn together!

I have purchased all the National Geographic readers for my classroom library. My students love these informational texts. Unfortunately, this text will not be going into my classroom library as it is, because there are two pictures where a women's breast is exposed and I can just imagine student's reactions to this. I will however, drawn on these women's tops so that this book is appropriate for my class.

My daughter loved this book. She is in an Egyptian phase right now and reading all she can. This was written well for her age, 8, and gave great facts which she retains!!

It was fine for what we needed; a school project. That's all I really need to say. Didn't really want to post, but couldn't get out of it.

I bought this in preparation for multiple 10+ hour flights with a toddler. Stickers are winners! Educationally-themed sticker activities, even better.Pros:- This was exactly as described: the pages are ultra-glossy, allowing the kiddo to place and move the stickers around.- The illustrations both on the pages and the stickers are bright and cheery, and definitely capture a toddler's attention.Cons:- The stickers are not the thickest, so one extra-excited pull will result in a beheaded animal (but that means an extra sticker!).- All of the stickers are on an insert halfway through the book. It's a lot of stickers on the two pages, and it can be challenging for a younger toddler to easily get a single sticker out without disturbing others.At the end of the day, it's an activity book, so it's not a book that will be lasting through the ages with your kid. I wanted it for long travel, and it was perfect for that purpose. We used it on several flights, and have maybe five more uses with it before it will be repurposed as just an activity ground for other stickers (rather than these specific counting projects).

This is a cute book for working on counting and numbers and the pictures and stickers are adorable. The stickers stuck very well the first time I used them and so so the second time. My biggest challenge with this was actually getting the stickers off their original page without ripping them. They have some very thin parts and my toddler would tear off a leg or something while trying to pull them up to put them in the book. I eventually had to take over on the sticker removal part which is a bummer because that is more effort on my part and less time with her working her fine motor skills. I might buy this again, but now knowing really it is more of a one time use book than anything.

I absolutely LOVE These sticker/activity books for my two year old. I have ordered three of them (busy day, ABC, and 123) and the quality of the book is amazing. The pages are sturdy, and wipe clean if you choose to use a dry erase marker (for teaching) and the stickers are designed with very cute and bright illustrations. This has been a wonderful learning tool. I keep one in my diaper bag for when we are in a waiting room, or at a restaurant and if really keeps her entertained. This product is highly recommended!

My 22 month old daughter loves to play with this sticker book. I bought this for her to look at while she potty trains and it has been a lifesaver. The stickers are colorful and the pages are illustrated well to keep her interested. Great for little toddler hands!

This was perfect for my 2 year old to play with on the plane! It was small enough to fit in her backpack and it provided fun and learning all in one!

The stickers are not reusable! They break very easily, and are not sticky after you take them off the first time. The illustrations are cute, but without the stickers is useless.

This one is a wast of money. I was planning to return it but my girl has worked on it, so I can not return.But frankly speaking, I can not understand why it costs so much!!

Good quality, cute illustrations, lots of learning fun! I would order more from this series. It was a bit short but I guess the quality makes up for the quantity.

Samantha Ellis is a playwright and journalist. The daughter of Iraqi-Jewish refugees, she grew up thinking her family had travelled everywhere by magic carpet. From an early age she knew she didn’t want their version of a happy ending—marriage to a nice Iraqi-Jewish boy—so she read books to find out what she did want. Her plays include Patching Havoc, Sugar and Snow and Cling To Me Like Ivy, and she is a founding member of women’s theatre company Agent 160. She lives in London.

Very relatable memoir. I believe if I were to go out for a drink with Samantha Ellis there would be a lot of laughter and " I know, right!" moments.I skimmed some parts about books I haven't read yet to avoid some spoilers because Ellis rightly doesn't hold anything back, how could she? A Room with a View, and Cold Comfort Farm have moved a little farther up my virtual tbr list.

For those who love the classic heroines-- the Jane Eyres, the Anne of Green Gables, and the Lizzy Bennets-- this book is a fun and nostalgic return to some of your favorite characters. Samantha Ellis traces her life and her experiences to each heroine that influenced her at a certain age and time. Of course, as the reader, I did the same thing. It's lovely to go back and see how these characters shaped my character and if they do indeed stand the test of time. As an English major and literary critic, it was a little difficult to get past the blatant disregard to literary theory and criticism of novels. But once I took to heart that this book wasn't meant to be filled with scholarly literary theory, then I was able to push past it and enjoy the book. Take it for what it is-- a warm-hearted memoir laid against the backdrop of famous heroines.

I wrote a blog post about this book and how much I loved it! The book is a story of one bookworm sharing her love and appreciation for the books she read growing up, drawing attention to how each book shared her as a reader and as a woman. This is not a book one would breeze through, but drink like a fine wine- slowly, enjoying every moment. It will open up other avenues of reading to try and check out! If you are in a book slum then you need to pick up this book!

This book is great! She analyzes heroines that I have met and some that I haven't. The author is funny, yet brings up some great questions. Also, this book just makes me realize how much more there is for me to read. It makes me want to reread books to look at heroines through adult eyes, as well as read those books that are mentioned that I haven't read before.

The book gave me a chance to think a bout manyl my favorite books in a new light. Light and easy to read.

This memoir is the fantastic journey of a daughter of Iraqi-Jewish refugees, growing up in London and making her way in the world - book in hand. (Well, a lot of books, actually.) This thoughtful story is packed full of delightful character studies (of both those in the books and those behind the books). The testing of youthful impressions with a more-experienced perspective is engaging and fun. Even the parts related to books I haven't yet read were interesting. If you are a book-lover, you'll enjoy this one.

I would like to have learned more about her family. It was creative in the discussion of authors. Got a bit tiring for the writer to find a heroine she could relate to or follow.

An easy to read book. The author analyzes the female characters and roles in various books in a simple but realistic way from her point of view as a woman. I liked it and enjoyed it. I don't agree entirely with the author's interpretation of the German tales. Overall, a good read.

As a professional illustrator, this is a MUST HAVE for artists. Definitely more specifically for character designers, but it does have a lot of lessons for general illustrators. I graduated college with very basic knowledge on character design. I saw that the great Stephen Silver was creating a book for it, and I instantly bought it. A couple of hours of reading and I already learned more about character design than what I learned in college. One of the most important things that I learned from this book is necessary communication through silhouette and shapes. These things will give your characters variety and will help them stand out from the rest. I'm still going through and trying to absorb all the knowledge that it has. Thank you Mr. Silver, I hope to meet you one day! You rock!

so good--I'd compare it to Preston Blair's Animation book since it is another simple but densely informative classic by a master of the art form. So much is covered so clearly--you can read it in a day but will want to re-read it a hundred times since the info is that solid & profound. I have a lot of character design books and this is organised the best--concepts are broken down in a meaningful way and explained well. So much is covered, from process to rendering to turnarounds to character types, basic drawing principles and sources of inspiration. Silver's outside in design approach is mind expanding. This book shows that the author is a real pro who has taught before.

The book provides more than ample examples and techniques for character design. It is appropriate for beginners as well as advanced designers. A well-structured, thick read of a book. Silver is generous with his knowledge sharing. The main point of his theory is using simple, strong shapes to create a structure for your characters. He exposes how these shapes work in his designs. HIs rough drawings show how he "draws through" the shapes to create depth and a believable cartoon anatomy for a design. I have taken a class from him in person and his books are as informative as his lectures.

Awesome book, great tips for drawing and useful guides on coming up with a good character. I'd recommend this to anyone interested in making new characters who needs help designing them. I even took it with me to my professor and I had referred it to my classmates

The book is one of my favorite art books. It has clear process for drawing forms, and great advice for developing characters. I love that his text is limited to the nuts and bolts of the skills, and doesn't have the feel of an academic tome with a tedious explanation of concepts. There are more drawings than words in this book. The diagrams and grids are easy to understand and implement. I can't say enough good things about his methods.

Just awesome. Stephen Silver is a legendary caricaturist and character designer, and this book is great. I much prefer this book to the online lectures and tutorials because it's tangible and I can use it more as a reference guide and linger in the sections I like.

Amazing, maybe a not so begginers book, it start with drawing excersices so you had to know or have some knowledge in how to draw, but this book subject cover so many technics for character development and for that it's amazing. I REALLY recomend it!

This book will be a character design bible book. I have never seen this kind of book before. There are so many important and practical design principles and drawing exercises. Thank you so much for making this great book for artists!!

This is a great book if you would like to have a vacation or tour in Warsaw. All you need is actually in this book from the places where to eat to the places you can go to if you would like to experience night life or just take a deep breath, relax and unwind on their parks. This book is almost perfect, I should say; however, it lacks pictures, besides the pictures on the links provided. It would have been better if there are actual pictures and address of the places without the need to click some links, although it's already helpful but we just don't know if we suddenly go offline or there is no internet connection. You know it would really help so that the readers like myself would know if we came to the right place once we are physically there. Besides that, this is an amazing tour guide-on-the-go book.

I want to take my wife to Europe for our anniversary. There are so many places I would really want to visit and more so for her. One of the cities in my bucket list is Warsaw. This Polish capital is rich in culture and history. I bought this book to prepare myself when we travel. The book contains 25 secrets every traveler needs on his or her journey like where to eat, drink and stay. It also has tips about Warsaw’s nightlife and where to get good views of the city. The book lists down places to visit like parks, museums and markets. There are also suggestions on day trips, sports and entertainment. I hope they could include more pictures on the next edition.

This guidebook was so valuable for our recent trip to Warsaw! It provided us with great tips for restaurants as well as provided us with the most ideal times to visit various attractions. Honestly, this is the first time that I will be using a travel book guide coming from an author that is new to me. To my surprise it never disappoint us! The author points out what we should see and what we "might" want to see, giving us a good overview before we embark on an adventure. I’m so glad that I purchased it. Thanks to the author!

At 4 months baby girl was waking up every 2-3 hours. We were so sleep deprived and knew that this was not sustainable. After receiving the green light to start sleep training from our pediatrician we bought this book. We actually didn't read all of it. Mainly the part that explains how to sleep train the baby. What new parents have time to sit down and read an entire book? :) The first night she cried for about 50 minutes total and ended up sleeping 11 hours! Second night she cried for 40 minutes total but we never had to go in to comfort her. After the second night she was fine. She has been sleeping 11-12 hours straight. We are so thankful Dr Ferber for giving us our nights back and helping our baby sleep so soundly through the night. Highly recommend this book!!

First of all: Ferber is not a monster who lets babies cry themselves to sleep. If you give this book a chance you will see that. Since being born and after 12 months of dealing with our baby waking up every 1 to 2 hours and not knowing how to fall back asleep on their own, we tried the techniques in this book and saw results from the very first night to the tune of our baby sleeping for 10 hours straight for the first time since he was born! And the results just kept getting better and the crying almost completely went away. For those on the fence about Ferber, there are however several keys to successfully implementing his techniques. The first and most important is both husband and wife need to be on board for keeping discipline to practice the techniques in the book. If one or the other can't take baby crying as they adjust to new sleeping conditions that do not require help from Mom or Dad, this book won't be of any help and will be the source of heated arguments putting unnecessary pressure on your marriage. The second key is consistency. If you do this for a few weeks and think your baby's sleep troubles are solved, it's likely your baby will regress back to the "easier" conditions that baby formerly preferred to sleep under (i.e. conditions where someone needs to wake up whenever baby wakes up to satisfy whatever condition(s) baby has been trained to think they need to fall back asleep). This will lead to no one in the house being happy. The final key which combines both the above keys is maintaining the same schedule every day to the best of everyone's ability. It's easy to fall out any routine, but if you slip on baby's routine, this will directly affect their ability to sleep. I'm sorry to say while my wife and I maintained discipline for the first 3 weeks on this book and our baby was sleeping through the night for 9 to 10 hours without our help, after 3 weeks my wife who had been struggling with how quickly our baby showed he did not need anyone's help reverted to going in at the sound of any whimper and after 3 or 4 days of this she's back to sleeping on the floor every night with our baby who again is waking up every hour or two and needing her to cuddle him back to sleep. While this is the exact type of sleeping arrangement I thought we were trying to avoid, this is proof to me that while the techniques in this book work, if both Mom & Dad are not on board your baby will revert back to whatever conditions they formerly fell asleep under and you'll have to start all over again. I hope my advice can be of help to others. Good luck!

I'll just sit here and wait for you to write your 5 star review after reading the book. Go ahead. I'll wait.Yup, as a first time mom, I thought "She'll sleep through the night at 3 months. Ok 4 months. OK SIX MONTHS. OMG PLEASE SLEEP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MOMMY NEEDS HER SLEEP." So after trying solids and routines and blah blah blah, I finally gave in and read the book and did everything Ferber suggested. And 4 days later, BOOM. Sleep training complete. 9.5 hours of pure blissful uninterrupted SLEEP.A few things. Babies can sleep through the night around 3 months, but do what feels right. 6 months felt right for us.When you have a child that sits up in the crib and cries, and you want them to go back to sleep, do not pick them up to lay them down! Just rub their back and walk out.If their diaper is soaked and waking them up: feed them liquids earlier and spread it out. I nurse my daughter a little an hour before bed, then solids, then nurse a little more right before bed. Then I change her before she gets in the crib (this wakes her up but she's still drowsy). I also switched to overnight diapers. This solved a lot of our problems.Last, this is an easy read. And very relatable to every persons situation.

Dr. Ferber is a genius! I completely did not understand, and got the wrong idea about the Ferber method before i got this book. After, reading the book and understanding how exactly it works, i was relieved to find that it isn't just letting your baby cry for an hour by themselves. People who talk this method down, just don't really understand it. My 5 month old son would only fall asleep to the bottle. He would wake in the middle of the night needing either a pacifier, bottle, or to be held to go back to sleep. I like how Ferber explains how sleep works and how the wrong sleep associations for a child are important and it made perfect sense when I thought about it. I did the the sleep training and i am now on the third day. My son falls asleep completely on his own without needing to held to sleep or, fed to sleep, or using a pacifier. He now falls asleep completely on his own within 3-10mins of me putting him down in his crib and he sleeps completely through the night. I wish i got this book weeks ago. I am sooooo happy i bought this book. I would recommend it to any new parent trying to sleep train their 4month and up babies.
