This series may be Ilona Andrews' best yet--yes, even better than the truly excellent Kate Daniels series or Innkeeper. Both the main and secondary characters are vital, interesting, and mostly likable people that deserve many, many more books. Heck, even the tertiary characters like Heart, Kurt and Officer Munoz are well-developed PEOPLE in the able hands of Ilona and Gordon Andrews. The world-building is stellar, the plots are tight and interesting, the romance is exciting and believable, and the editing is excellent.Urban fantasy is a genre flooded with mediocre writing and poor editing, and books from Ilona Andrews (and the fantastic Patricia Briggs) are shining examples of what really, really good writing and editing can create. As an analogy, most urban fantasy is like regular food. Some of it is McDonalds--satisfies at the time but isn't really good. Some of it is like Applebees--actually pretty good food, and a better experience. Enjoyable, but still formulaic, predictable and not terribly exciting. This series (and Kate Daniels) are like an exquisite, Michelin-starred chef-created meal that is truly a work of art. Yes, you might have beef at all three places, but at the fancy restaurant it's going to be perfectly prepared, with tastes that both please and challenge your palate, and will be beautifully presented. THAT'S what reading this series is like--eating a gourmet meal. Luckily for us, this book costs no more than most, although I would have bought it in hardcover without hesitation. In a fading genre, books like this will always sell, because they are so very good.I won't recap the book, as others have already done that and I want to keep this spoiler-free, but here are my likes and dislikes of this book:LIKES/LOVES:1. The characters. Not only do you root for them, but these are people that you would really want to know and hang out with in real life. They try to be the best people they can be, they learn and grow, they don't make stupid, dramatic mistakes to further the plot, and never once do you want to yell, "You idiot, what are you thinking?!?" Instead, you'll find yourself cheering them on. Even more, no one is black and white. Characters are painted in myriad shades of gray, making them more complex and interesting.2. The sense of family and loyalty that makes the Baylor clan who they are. They aren't perfect by a long shot, but they are awesome, and they love and support one another. Hatred, jealousy and backstabbing have their place in stories, but thankfully the authors didn't infect this family with any of that. They are a family you love to love, and that love and support extends to others--Cornelius and Matilda, for example. Others care for and fight for them because of this, too.3.. The infinite potential for more books in this world. I would be thrilled if Avon is smart enough to renew Hidden Legacy for at least another three books. This world has so much more to explore, and there are so many secondary characters who deserve their own stories--Cornelius, Augustine, each of the Baylors (I would LOVE to see how Leon turns out!), and even unrelated characters simply set in the Hidden Legacy world. MOAR BOOKS PLZ!4. The selfless but possessive love between Nevada and Rogan. There's no artificial romantic angst between them, but they do have issues and bumps in the road. They handle them like real, mature people who want the best for the other person, yet whom are not saints or martyrs.5. Love wins in the end in this book. Romantic love, family love, parental love, platonic love. Love wins, goodness wins, but there's nothing syrupy or cheesy about it.DISLIKES:1. The covers and titles of the series. The authors had little to no input on either, and Avon really dropped the ball on these. Thank goodness for Kindle, because I wouldn't want to be seen reading any of the three with a visible cover. Not only do they not represent the type or quality of story, but they're dated and incredibly cheesy. And the titles sound as if they let a bunch of sixth-grade fangirls name them. Do better, Avon, these stories deserve it. You can make covers and titles that will pull in new readers without making the books seem like modern bodicerippers. I suppose we should be grateful that they didn't come up with titles like, "The Prime's Plaything" or "Loved by a Hurricane". Barf.2. The fact that this is the end of the series contract. The authors have said that if Avon doesn't renew, they will self-publish at least one more book. That's great, but not enough! As I said before, this world and its characters can support (and deserve) a whole, long series. Get to it, Avon! You've got another Kate Daniels on your hands.Buy this book, and the two before it. You won't be disappointed. I promise.

This is another of those series that just gets better with each book, which considering the exceptional story in the last book is quite an accomplishment. The multiple interlacing plots make this another "can't put it down" novel that I tore through in 1 day, we have the kidnapping, the ex-fiancee you want to hate but really can't, the grandmother who seems to be Lucifer personified, a few thugs, a romance that is really starting to heat up and throw in some other suitors to mess with everything and you have a book so good you hate to see it end, especially since we got these 2 new ones so close together I fear the rest will be coming in the horrible 1-book-a-year mode. This book hardly ever slowed down, it was action, or some new power/secret revealed, a major move forward in the romance or some bit of strategy that you never saw coming that just boggles the mind. Trust me, you will never get bored. I will probably re-read some of my favorite parts after I write this review (I never re-read parts).Bottom line: Another in a chain of exceptional book from this pair of writers that seems almost impossible to have this many exceptional books. One of the things that make all of their books so addicting is that you have a whole host of secondary characters and you are interesting in all of them, throw in the humor that pervades even the Kate Daniels books and you have a mix that can never miss. 5 Stars and hope I don't have to wait a year for the next one but I won't miss it in any case but problem is this sentence on the Amazon page bothers me a bit "the thrilling conclusion to her Hidden Legacy series". The ending does allow for a protracted amount of time to pass before the next book but I hardly saw it as a "conclusion", we shall have to see.

This review was originally posted on the Goldilox and the Three Weres blog.I'm an avid Ilona Andrews fangirl and any novel they write goes immediately on my auto-buy list so it shouldn't be a surprise that I absolutely adored this book! Wildfire starts off a few hours after the conclusion of White Hot and it was a ride from that point on. My advice for when you start this book is to not start it until you have enough time to read it in one go. I started it before bed one night thinking I'd read a bit and then finish it the next day. That's not what happened. I just kept reading until I finished the book at 4am. I should know better than to start an Ilona Andrews book before bed by now.I know I said it in my review of White Hot but I completely adore the Baylor family! I love their dynamic together and that each member is so different from the others except for the deep love they feel for each other. Both of those things lead to some hilarious and tender moments in the book. I loved finding out more about Leo, Catalina, and Arabella's magic. Honestly, I did not see Arabella's brand of magic coming but it added so much to the story! I also adore how big the Baylor's hearts are. Matilda and Cornelius have kind of been integrated into the family along with Rogan and it was everything! Also, can I say I want to find someone who loves me as much as Grandma Frida loves Romeo?Nevada has come a long way since the start of the series. She was always self-assured and very self-aware with a deep devotion to her family but in this book, she is more open and accepting of letting others into her tight circle, especially of Rogan and the feelings she's developed for him. She’s used to being the one taking care of problems for her family but not so used to someone helping her take care of her problems. The fact that she doesn’t keep fighting it, while working to maintain her own need for hard-won independence, was a very nice development. The same can be said for Rogan. He isn’t used to anyone restraining him or putting restrictions on how far he is allowed to go for his goals. Nevada makes him a little more human, which means a little more vulnerable. He's never resentful for that. In fact, he seems to be mostly grateful that she doesn't let him toe the line. He's adapting and trying to bridge the gap between his possessiveness and Nevada’s needs to make their relationship work. Like Nevada, he isn’t used to anyone taking care of him, so Nevada’s care is new, surprising, and very much welcome. What I loved most about this book is that it had so many opportunities for there to be angsty drama between Nevada and Rogan, but every time it went in the complete opposite direction of the angst. There was communication and trust between them and it was so refreshing to read! A lot of authors feel like they have to keep the pot of misery stirred to make magic happen. Nevada and Rogan are constantly in situations filled with mortal danger, why would they need more issues? The relationship between them really pushed the book forward and made me believe in them more. I love them together so much!Wildfire is supposed to be the third and last book in the Hidden Legacy trilogy, but the authors have mentioned that they plan to write at least one more book with Nevada and Rogan and maybe more in the universe. And that is very much how the novel reads. Plot lines that need to be wrapped up to satisfy the reader are wrapped up, but some larger plot lines are left open.COME ON, AVON! GET ON THAT! I NEED MORE BOOKS IN THIS SERIES! Thankfully, the authors announced on their blog that if the next book isn't picked up by the publisher that they'd self-publish it which is wonderful news! Because I need at least one more Nevada and Rogan book! I would like to note here that I also want a book about Catalina and a certain Italian mage. And an Arabella book! And a Bern book! And a Leo book! And hell, I want a Matilda when she's older book. And before I can start listing books for each member of Rogan's team, let's just say I need more books set in this universe period.ARC was provided by the publisher via Edelweiss.

LOVED THIS STORY. could not put the book down...Jodi Thomas is a fabulous story teller. I felt happy, sad, mad, loved, awed....Once again Jodi Thomas brought a story to life for me...I felt I could see the dust and dirt. I could smell the filthy soldiers and cowboys. I could feel the heart ache and pain of the characters. Jodi has a style of writing that makes you feel like you are there as the story un folds. I love the Harmony series and the way she brought the town to being and giving a background to many of the characters in her pervious books is just utterly enjoyable. If you have not read one of the Harmony series book this book could be a stand alone, read first or last...no matter what you will be happy you read it...the only hard part was getting to the end and knowing you have to wait till 2015 for another Harmony story !!!!!!

I absolutely loved the beginning of a place called Harmony. The three founding families are fascinating and I cannot saywhich I liked more. The courage it took to do all they had to do and survive was amazing.. I forgot it was just a story told by a good storyteller. After all that is why I love good books.

How creative to take us back to the late 1800's and trace the family roots of Harmony! Three major settling families came with hope of a new life, each with unique abilities needed to start a town. Many of us who are multi-generation Texans have memories of the 40 acres our great-grandparents told us they received when they moved to the new state. It is also good to learn about the state pen at Huntsville, sewing factories in Dallas and Galveston and the poor immigrant workers who made our clothes even up through the 1950's and 1960's.We have so much to be thankful for and should never take for granted the life we live today in this great state.

Personally, I love Jodi Thomas books. They are down home and endearing. I find myself identifying with the characters as they come to life. I have read the previous books from the "Harmony Series". This book takes you back to the beginning before "Harmony" became a town. You journey through the pages to learn the events that led four families to come together to build it. I enjoyed reading it. If you like Jodi Thomas books, you should enjoy this one as well!

I have read all of the Hamony series books. This one goes all the way back to the families that founded the original town of Harmony. The way they met their wives, traveled across the country by covered wagons, and decided the way to build the town. It is a heartwarming story of people who are drawn together and become like family. It is a story of hardships and strife that they overcome to build Harmony to what it is today. I know you will like it and want to follow the rest of the people who make up a town called Harmony.

Jodi Thomas always writes a solid book that is pleasant reading for me. Thomas has now written "A Place Called Harmony" to explain how the Texas town of Harmony began after writing books on the town. I love the historical aspect of her stories set in Texas, while she brings the town of Harmony into the present day. She keeps my attention with her interesting characters. When I finish the book, I wonder what her characters, who have gotten to be friends, are up to next and want to read the next book to get a glimpse of them and meet new characters.

I thought the other books in the Harmony series were much better than this story. It was good as to keep me guessing how the characters related to the future ones I had already read about. I didn't really like these characters until almost the end. It was more repetitive than I like, but the ending was satisfying. I don't think it would make me want to read more so my suggestion would be first get acquainted with Harmony through some of the other Harmony books.

This is the Jodie Thomas I love....All the Harmony books have been great. So attached to all the families in the series. This book about how Harmony was founded is so right. Thank you Jodie.

My daughter absolutely loves this book. It’s so creative.

My daughter absolutely loved this book! Super fast shipping.

The elements of the story are original, but the themes and plot seem to borrow heavily from it's predecessors; it reminded me a lot of Box Trolls, but I feel like both of them stem from Oliver Twist. Still good, well executed, and the art is great, which is why I bought it in the first place.

For a 6 issue mini-series while it's not bad there seems to be a sense of a larger picture made but nothing really answered which I left me feeling empty once I finished the run. I enjoyed the lead character Poe the young boy with feathers and I felt Bianca the privileged girl from the city was good. They felt like real children and encapsulated that sense of exploration and finding one's self. I felt the set up was good too with the central city being where the wealthy live but the impoverished reside in the maze that surrounds the city. That made for some fascinating stuff but it's not really explored. My big criticism is the material comes off shallow. The writer may return for a second installment because a lot of content seems unanswered. If the run had been upped to perhaps 12 issues it may have been more fulfilling. I find if you are a mini-series then you can have breadcrumbs to a good mystery and then reveal it later. However, this book felt less like breadcrumbs to a good mystery and instead felt like the mystery was front and center leaving me feeling unfulfilled from the story by the end of it. My feelings by the end are so mixed to a point where I am kinda fascinated to keep reading but at the same time indifferent to want to continue this story. There is an allure to the mystery but at the same time it sort of just reaches that point where if you aren't going to give a fuller experience then why should I come back for a second run if you do a follow-up? What inclination do you have for me to give you my time? And that's how the book feels by the end. There is good stuff there but I feel like you are playing a game of "keep away" and that leaves me to the point where I want to just say "Well if you aren't going to give me a story then I'm just leaving." There feels like too much teasing that makes it more frustrating than fulfilling.Art wise the book is beautiful. Really that's what attracted my attention to it. It blends a sort of child-like fairy tale sense of wonder but also sort of gothic. The lead character Poe really does remind me of a Mike Mignola style design with a lot of negative color but that once sense of brightness in a key spot. The art is really solid and makes it enjoyable to look at.While not as much story as I would like and still leaving me a bit frustrated by the end I do think this is a good book. It's okay and I wonder if maybe with another installment it will be one of those titles where you read the next part in the series then go back to reread the first part to catch hooks and hints you missed, sorta like how Grant Morrison writes from time to time.I do recommend giving this a look but at a leisurely pace. I read it all in one sitting and felt rather jaded by the end with the lack of information being given to me. Again, it feels like a game of "keep away". Still it's good art and a fairly fascinating premise that needs a bit more crafting. Feel free to take a look and make your own opinion.

Taking place in an alternative universe where it is 19th century by our standards, a strange-looking baby is found deep in the depths of slums surrounding a beautiful white city. Completely covered in black feathers and unable to look directly at light, this child would one day change the whole world.Meanwhile, a pampered, headstrong little rich girl lives her whole life trapped behind the great white wall that protects the perfect city from a great disarray of dilapidated buildings called "Maze". She has grown very curious about life out there, so she boldly disregards her witch-like mother's disapproval and escapes into the dreaded labyrinth of poverty and squalor overran by the so-called "Mice" (homeless children who live in The Maze.)Now on the brink of adolescence, the feathered kid named "Poe" does his best to avoid his adoptive father's overprotective clutches while keeping watch over the hungry Mice as they steal from merchants serving the wealthy class. Poe himself is extremely shy - and also very self-conscious about his own freakish appearance - so he takes great pains not to be seen while acting as "Batman" for The Maze. As a result, he has been branded the elusive "Ghost" - and also blamed for the mysterious disappearance of children from Maze. Then Poe encounters the rather impudent little missy, who has fled the very safety of her own luxurious home to happily explore the broken-down world, which she nevertheless finds very beautiful and thrilling. And at the same time, Poe WANTS to go live in what Bianca Chappelle sniffingly considers a gilded prison with nothing to do - because he learns from his new friend that a white goddess completely covered in FEATHERS is revered there.Unfortunately, the young hero would not find safety or acceptance when he succeeds in taking Bianca straight over the forbidding wall. Not only that; the two plucky kids also find themselves caught up in a huge, sinister scheme that even invloves two polar opposites: a vengeful young transgender "queen" of Mice who is still grieving the loss of her brother who had been taken from her years ago and an arrogant captain of guards assigned to find the runaway girl - and also has something darkly secretive up his well-tailored sleeve. And the whole thing is being watched - and perhaps manipulated - with great amusement by two unidentified creatures who might as well be aliens from the stars. It is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel for young readers done in delicate inks and muted colors slashed by bright red hue in hypnotizing snake-like form of the villain's "Pied Piper" warbling and flying scarf as he preys on innocent young victims for his secret, malevolent purpose. The characters are deftly designed like lovingly crafted wooden dolls with dramatic facial expressions and also dressed in historical costumes to set the brooding Victorian mood. But that isn't all; the background is simply stunning with all the brilliant architectural details filling up almost every panel. And the most SPECTACULAR part of the book's great artistic tapestry is a double-page spread on 8th and 9th pages of Chapter Two (the pages aren't numbered, BTW), where the layout simply BREAKS all the rules to tell two different stories at the same time as two main characters literally hop from one panel to another distorted panel while discussing how The White Guide led the very first settlers to a dry land. One more thing...I think the book mentioned somewhere that one or more of the three creators worked for Disney, BTW! :)

I started to learn SQL about 1 year ago. I used YouTube videos as a source and a chaos came in my head. This book is organized and gets in the database programming step by step in logical order. Unlike a lot of other educational tools for learning programming languages, this one truly made the content a lot easier to digest and a lot more enjoyable to go through.Great book for newbies!

I really like the intuitive relation between the code and the explanations - arrows, background color, simple explanation just in the point of interest in the code. I also downloaded the source code that supports every chapter and put my hands on the keyboard. Following the chapters and executing the sample code at the same time helps me a lot in my learning.I recommend it to every beginner who wants to jump in the databases.

Great book. Examples and included software are SO helpful for those of us who like to learn by doing. Highly recommend.

This book is well written with beginners in mind. Step by step instructions walk you through simple concepts to complex sql queries. highly recommended.

I was asked in my work to write some SQL Server code. Some learning materials were provided, but the only thing it did was confuse me. I looked at the first pages of this book and I saw graphics and pointers then I decided that this is exactly for me, a visual person, who are not familiar with the technical terminology. I already started to write queries that select and filter data. I am very glad and I highly recommend this book.

I like that great effort went into this fairly comprehensive book regarding color-codings and informational highlights that stand out. Every technical book should be this way. Kudos!

This is the first time I write a book review. This book is carefully designed and well explained and I highly recommend this book to all SQL beginners. Good work!

A Great Book! Very well organized and clearly written. It's not only recommended for the beginner but for experienced users as well.

Review

"[An] unforgettable account. . . . Vivid, compassionate prose. . . . Few writers can match her evocations of individual suffering in wartime." —Newsweek (International Edition)“Many journalists have written accounts of the wars of Yugoslav dissolution. Madness Visible is among the best of them. . . . One of Giovanni’s strengths is that if she takes sides it is simply the side of the victim. . . . Succeeds admirably.” –Times Literary Supplement “A compelling and meticulous account. . . . The author is at her very best when she writes about the people. . . . When di Giovanni speaks of Sarajevo –and she does speak, her voice poignant, grief admixed with rage and frustration– it is gripping.” –San Francisco Chronicle “Compelling reportage at its best: grisly and depressing at times, of course, but also revealing.” –The Economist“One of the best books ever written about war.” --The Arizona Republic"Moving. . . . Janine di Giovanni is our Virgil, guiding us through the circles of that man-made hell: Sarajevo, Kosovo, Pristina. . . . If you read no other book about the Balkan wars, read this one. " --Phil Caputo “[An] important book. . . . There are few outsiders who better understand what has happened in the Balkans. . . . Madness Visible is the story of all wars.” --The Guardian (London)"Di Giovanni connects names and battles as well as peoples who have a historic distrust of one another. . . . This is di Giovanni's one war, and she passionately documents its inhumanity." --The New York Times“Illuminating. . . . [Her] stream-of-consciousness approach . . . imbues the book with its quiet but undeniable emotional power. . . . [Despite the] gloom that pervades each page, these accounts remain compelling because of Di Giovanni’s resolve to grasp each individual’s frail sense of hope and shattered human dignity.” --.San Antonio Express-News“Remarkable. . . . A powerful, passionate account, and well worth the waiting for.” --The Times (London)"Janine di Giovanni has described war in a way that almost makes me think it never needs to be described again. . . . More than a book about war, however, this is a book about the human race, in all its anguishing complexity. I can honestly say that I finished this book a wiser, more compassionate person than when I started." --Sebastian Junger“Powerful. . . . Moving. . . . Full of gripping reportage about the horrors of life during wartime.” --Newsday"The veteran reporter has a keen eye for detail and dialogue [while] . . . delving . . . substantially into the political, historical and ethnic tensions contributing to the 1992-95 war. . . . While di Giovanni looks back, however, she is aware that others do not. . . . Madness Visible reminds us of the folly and shame in this neglect." --The Washington Post“Janine di Giovanni is superb--an extraordinarily brave war correspondent and a wonderful writer as well. What a combination!” --William Shawcross "Excellent. . . . Di Giovanni depicts just how unsatisfactory, even crazy, the 'peace' in Kosovo is. . . . Her descriptive talents are at their best when her eye comes to rest on the plight of civilians. . . . Don't read this book for its analysis of Balkan politics, which you can get elsewhere, but for its very humane portrait of fighters, refugees and victims." --The Daily Telegraph (London) "An embedded journalist before the term was invented. . . . [Di Giovanni] provides a haunting record of the continuing war in the Balkans." --Harper's Bazaar"Powerful. . . . The images are unforgettable and di Giovanni writes movingly, with no need for embellishment, about . . . the insanity and irrationality of human behavior. Read this book and you may begin to understand what war looks and feels like, or even smells like." --The Spectator"Chilling. . . . [Di Giovanni's] courage is matched only by her compassion for her subjects. . . . She is a woman who simply doesn't know the meaning of the word 'can't' and in her profession that's a major asset." --The Evening Standard (London)“Should be read . . . for an understanding of the depravity of Balkan wars of ethnic cleansing . . . [and for the] insights [it] offer[s] into the world of war correspondents working at the razor’s edge of their profession.” --Columbia Journalism Review"Affecting. . . . Her account reflects both her passionate engagement with the people and her own sense of deep loss in this place." --The Hartford Advocate

From the Inside Flap

As a senior foreign correspondent for "The Times of London, Janine di Giovanni was a firsthand witness to the brutal and protracted break-up of Yugoslavia. With unflinching sensitivity, Madness Visible" follows the arc of the wars in the Balkans through the experience of those caught up in them: soldiers numbed by the atrocities they commit, women driven to despair by their life in paramilitary rape camps, civilians (di Giovanni among them) caught in bombing raids of uncertain origin, babies murdered in hate-induced rage. Di Giovanni's searing memoir examines the turmoil of the Balkans in acute detail, and uncovers the motives of the leaders who created hell on earth; it raises challenging questions about ethnic conflict and the responsibilities of foreign governments in times of mass murder. Perceptive and compelling, this unique work of reportage from the physical and psychological front lines makes the madness of war wholly visible.

To be inside the hell that was Sarajevo and to convey to her readers those days was an unsettling truth.

Captures the effects of the wars on the people on the ground---both soldiers and civilians. Di Giovanni relates story after story of what she saw and experienced over ten years and four wars. Highly recommended.

Janine DiGiovanni writes a first class report on the war in Yugoslavia. I highly recommend this book.

...for us, her readership, that is.What strikes me most about this superbly-told memoir is the visceral reality with which author Di Giovanni succeeds in recollecting her experiences of the period and place with razor-sharp detail. Even more shocking once I'd learned (towards the end of Madness Visible) that she'd absconded alone to Cote D'Ivoire, Ivory Coast, of all locales to compile her notes and pen this book. For *that* alone, I think she deserves heapful praise; all the moreso in that the bombs began to fall in the Ivoreans own civil conflict at the time of her sojourn there. Yikes...Curious about this particular work is that Janine chooses to commence her account of the bloody Balkan decade with the NATO bombings of Kosovo in 1999. After a suitable reflection on the read, I have yet to figure out why that was the case...almost like we were going back in time with her -- or the experience which had a lesser impact upon her was delivered first.Theories all. Curiosity, it was. Merely curiosities.A frightening element which shines resoundingly through is the war correspondent's mythic love for the field of battle, almost as if the daily rush of adrenaline which war reporters mainline from conflict zones around the globe is like the elixir of their lives, their consummate vice in a manner of speaking.I've heard about this several times before, by reading other sources and listening to speeches given my those who've passed thorugh bloody battlefield hells, and am fully cognizant of the phenomenon. Di Giovanni makes no bones about the ravages of it, and is forthright with her admission that "it was only possible to love one war," quoting the immortal words of Spanish Civil War correspondent Martha Gellhorn. That's a statement, if I've ever heard one before. As I flipped through page after captivating page, my mind drifted back to thoughts of the year 1984, the Winter Olympics in the Bosnian capital, and how only a decade (or less) previous, the world banded together on those same majestic slopes surrounding Sarajevo (in Pale, for instance) in an act of peace, harmony, and amateur sport.Positively nightmarish it might have been for some of the athletes to have returned to witness the aftermath of the carnage.A stray thought which came to mind as I pondered the read.Di Giovanni is a very talented scribe with a flair for narrative. I hope to read more of her stuff in other places, and I will certainly be keeping an eye out for her.Kudos on the tip for the Richard Holbrooke book. I've already added it to my library.

Perhaps the most bizarre incident recounted in Janine di Giovanni's tales of war comes at a time of peace. She is in Sarajevo, six years after the end of the war, and a radio station in Cape Town wants to interview her about a piece she has written for her newspaper, the Times. To her horror the interviewer asks her about snipers and aid convoys, as though the Bosnian war was still in full swing. The fact that it had ended had simply passed the South African by. "It was my obsession," she writes, but not that of others. So this is a book about di Giovanni's obsession. The Yugoslav wars, or at least the Bosnian and Kosovo chapters of it. This is compelling reportage at its best. Grisly and depressing at times, of course, but also most revealing too. As reporting wars and how to do it, becomes, in the wake of Iraq, ever more a subject of discussion, di Giovanni is brave to admit that she for one does not believe in objectivity.Discussing the siege of Sarajevo which lasted from 1992 to 1995, she writes: "We were guilty, we knew, of perhaps only covering one side of the war, but for us there was only one side: the side that was getting pounded, that was being strangled slowly, turning blue and purple." That side was the Bosnian Muslim side, and those Serbs who always said that they were "demonised" by the international media will see vindication in these words. After all, they will point out, Alija Izetbegovic, the then leader of the Bosnian Muslims was being investigated for war crimes by The Hague war crimes tribunal when he died in 2003 di Giovanni does not talk of Muslim crimes. But, as she says, "the truth wasn't necessarily objective; it was where we were sitting, what we were seeing." And she was seeing civilians cut down by Serbian snipers and old people literally freezing to death in a nursing home. The book begins with the Kosovo war in 1999, moves on to Milosevic's Serbia in the months afterwards and then flashes back to the Bosnia of the early 1990s. There are telling chapters exploring the minds of two key Bosnian Serb leaders, the Shakespearean scholar Nikola Koljevic, who made his own tragedy before killing himself, and Biljana Plavsic who, racked by remorse, unusually pleaded guilty to war crimes at The Hague.Di Giovanni recalls that the doyenne of a previous generation of war reporters, Martha Gellhorn, once said, referring to the Spanish Civil War, that "it was only possible to love one war" and the rest became duty. Di Giovanni would have us believe that Yugoslavia was her greatest love and that Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Iraq and the all the other places she has reported on were duty. In fact, reading between the lines, the true love seems to have been Sarajevo and Bosnia. If so, then even Kosovo was duty - but she does write about it well. A good book and a great read.

Madness Visible : A Memoir of War is one of those rarebooks where the author focuses on the victims-womenand children-and how they were caught between thefires of opposing forces. She explains how the warscut a violent swath through the fabric of Balkansociety and culture, how rape became an instrument ofwar to be used against Moslem women, in particular, for whom the shame of rape and the children rapesproduced rendered their lives all but unbearable. Ms.Di Giovanni allows readers to experience the tragedyof the Balkans Wars intimately and unforgettably. This book is a must read for anyone who wants tounderstand the horrors visited upon innocentpopulations who fall victim to the lust for power of ahandful of arrogant leaders the West could not orwould not contain. There is enough blame to go aroundfor everyone who had anything to do with bringing theworld the Balkan Wars.
