About the Author

Frank Miller began his career in comics in the late 1970s and rose to fame while first drawing, and then writing, Daredevil for Marvel Comics. He was also the creative force behind BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, BATMAN: YEAR ONE and BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN. His many works have not only redefined classic characters, but also, on a few occasions, revitalized the comics industry. His multi-award-winning graphic novel 300 was brought to full-blooded life in the 2007 motion picture of the same name, and in 2008 he directed the feature film Will Eisner's The Spirit. His creator-owned crime saga Sin City first hit the page in 1991, and then the silver screen in 2005, with Miller on board as co-director with Robert Rodriguez. The two returned to direct the sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, released in 2014 and featuring two new stories by Miller. Frank Miller is a great writer that wrote a pretty intense take on the violence that the Joker can unleash, but this felt too familiar in that it essentially boiled down to a less interesting version of Jim Starlin's Batman: A Death in the Family. Miller doesn't explain how Batman retires, just implies it. It ends very abrubtly and doesn't have much of a plot. Just stick with Frank Miller's Batman: Year One & Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and if you really want more like it try out The Dark Knight Strikes Again.

It was an OK read. The art was very fine, as you'd expect. The story was very thin. It attempts to end in a "cliffhanger" but in reality it feels like it's only half a book.Miller sets up the premise, goes to execute on that premise... and then finishes right when the tension is built. I understand what he was trying to do, but my first thought on finishing the book was "uh, is that it?!" I actually started flipping through the last pages (storyboards and a "making of" sort of thing) to see if there was more to it, but nope.About those last pages: they felt like filler meant to bulk up what would have otherwise been an even thinner book. I started reading it with a cup of coffee one morning and when I reached the "ending" (which again should have been the start of the last half of a complete story) my coffee was still warm. It's that thin.In the end I felt like I was a little bit ripped off. Buy it used, as it's DEFINITELY not worth $13 for what amounts to half a story.

Not the most interesting story and far less imaginative than Dark Knight Returns and Strikes Back. The only other downside may be the inner narration from multiple characters that is seen in the other books as well. The story just isn't too exciting and where it delves into the characters of Batman, Robin, and Alfred it really misses the mark on Not showing how Bruce handles the event that causes him to stop being Batman. In typical Miller fashion characters from the universe are brought in (Joker, Killler Croc, Poison Ivy, Catwoman) but thankfully this time they all add to the story. The art is a more traditional style than the other entries in the series and then news broadcasts used to progress the story is toned down and works very well. Just wish they had done more with this one.

An underrated classic.Though I fell out of love with Frank Miller many years ago now, and deeply hate The Dark Knight Strikes Again, this book seems to be a return to form. Batman is once again made relateable and is suffering the consequences from a long life of violence.

I know there's a lot of critics that put this novel in a negative light, but I think it's great. The artwork is beautiful, and there's a whole underlying arc with Jason Todd that I feel stays very true to his character. It depicts the batman of the dark knight universe in a pre-gritty, pre-angsty way. But at the same time, it shows you drive of the events that will eventually lead up to those moments in the main series. And the bits with the joker? Brilliantly done. Some call it a rehash of the Jason Todd story, but I think it's an important backstory and overall retelling of this robin.

It’s a good read. The feel is similar to The Dark Knight Returns—it’s gritty and often revolves around Batman’s thoughts and doubts. Though, the story is far less grand than the story of TDKR. There’s no Superman or planet threatening nuclear bombs. Instead, the story simply revolves around Batman and Robin trying to solve more low key crimes commited by the usual Batman villains. Overall, it’s a well written, interesting Batman tale that shows what Batman was up to before he retired and then returned for TDKR.My main gripe with the book is, as other reviewers have mentioned, it’s very short. There are only 57 pages, and they aren’t even densely packed. Reading the whole book only takes about 30 min. Further, the story ends right as it’s getting interesting. I can see why Mill chose to end it where he did, but it still makes for a somewhat unsatisfying read. I really wish it would have been 4x the length, if not more.

Yes, we. All know how it ends for Jason Todd , but far more could have been done.Should have been done, actually...Theme of hubris could have been explored. Expect more from Miller... Old "Death in the Family" Jason was an innocent, trying to connect with his mother.. Understandable. Batman have an order and expected it to be followed.We know the death was horribly traumatizing for the Bats, but wish someone would \ could take that on. Take us beyond Jason's horrific bloody death... Hope this is continued.

I read the other reviews that said the ending was weak and I refuse to believe it well in my opinion they were correct the story started out strong and just poof it ended it was like because you know what was going to happen to Jason why bother even saying it just really disappointed in this book. One guy who reviewed at hit the nail right on the head when he said try to check it out from the library

The book "Citizen Science" exceeded my expectations by providing a plethora of examples of how citizen advocates in the realm of science can contribute to meaningful science research. Cooper explores how an ordinary citizen who is interested in human health, environmental health, or cosmic understanding can actively get involved in real science. This book is written so that anyone who has ever been interested in being a scientist could actually feel empowered by their contributions to the scientific world.

An excellent job in highlighting a modern scientific approach and one that can only get more attention as the Baby boomers start retiring.

An excellent introduction to the people and methods involved with citizen science. Highly recommended!

As a non-scientist, I found Cooper's book not just understandable but fascinating. She includes inspiring examples of citizen science and its impact in a wide range of scientific fields, explaining the citizen practitioners' motivation to get involved and the rewards that keep them committed.to their work. At a time when scientific findings are under attack from politically-motivated regressive forces, it's especially important to promote public engagement in, and commitment to, reality-based findings. Cooper's book will encourage the spread of such activities.

The democratic transactions many of us hold dear are evidently under assault. "What can I do?" is our frequent refrain. The good news is, we have amazing tools -- free, widely accessible -- for constructing not only our own meaning, but for getting the data to support our goals in local, regional, state, and federal contexts. Caren Cooper's book is a fine overview of the new-old phenomenon of citizen science. It is a welcome addition to a growing library around a movement we can continue to grow together, to help create the future we want.

The term "citizen science" is one of the year's biggest buzzwords. It's hard to define. Not just a word, but a movement of ordinary people getting involved with the process of discovery and conservation. Cooper's book is the guide we've needed. It's the map of this new territory. FODOR'S OREGON is a great travel guide to the entire state of Oregon. It features the urban centers of Portland, Eugene, Medford, Corvallis, Bend, and Salem, as well as the fruit- and vegetable-growing areas of the Willamette Valley, the seafood-producing areas on the coast, and the mountainous areas in the Cascades, as well as the warm, dry, "beef belt" regions of Eastern Oregon. There are accurate descriptions of recreation, dining, sightseeing, shopping, nature, and nightlife for each of these areas. Whether you're traveling to Oregon, or just admire the state's tendency to root for good against evil, DO NOT PASS THIS BOOK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found this guy to be extremely helpful. It helped me decide which route would be more interesting. It was not so deep into the details of every little town. But it was very useful to pick out some highlights as I drove through. There are good maps. They weren't that detailed but very helpful. Also there are good suggestions for places to eat and places to sleep. By dividing up the state into sections that can be explored one trip at a time, it is useful to plan for future visits. Oregon is a big state so don't plan on seeing everything in this book in just a few trips.

FODOR'S OREGON is a great guide to Oregon. Granted, a large portion- at least one-quarter- is devoted to Portland and its environs, but that shouldn't surprise you, since it's the state's biggest city and has lots to offer. Besides, there's plenty in here about the Willamette Valley (including Corvallis, Salem, and Albany), plus a section on the city of Eugene, along with great coverage of southern and eastern Oregon. Overall, this book has plenty of information about sightseeing, dining, recreation, shopping, nightlife, and lodging, so if you're planning a trip to Oregon, or just interested in the Beaver State, DO NOT PASS THIS BOOK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I planned a trip to the PNW in May for my husband, his friend, and myself. We had a blast, and I essentially used this book for all of the planning. The hotel suggestions were fantastic. The RiverPlace in Portland was fantastic. It was a great location for walking around the cities, the hotel itself had a very cool vibe, and the staff was awesome. The Edgewater in Seattle wasn't quite as great, but we chose it for all the history associated with that hotel. Fodor's had given RiverPlace a star of approval, but withheld it from the review of the Edgewater. Again, the reviews were spot-on.The sight-seeing suggestions were also great. We headed out to the Oregon Coast and decided to visit Cannon Beach (Goonies, man). It was really nice to have reviews of each little seaside town. Multnomah Falls are not to be missed. The guidebook had great suggestions for Mount Rainier Nat'l Park as well...but I'm pretty sure the sequester screwed us out of being able to do as much as we'd hoped. We still had a good time though. In Washington, we drove out on the Olympic Peninsula, but we only had a day to spend. I really needed to narrow down to our top-choice spots, and it was perfect. We stopped at Lake Quinault for lunch, headed out to Ruby Beach, turned in for the Hoh rainforest, and just generally had a blast. (If you aren't pressed for time, I do recommend taking longer than a day for the Olympic Peninsula, it's huge, and we spent a ridiculous amount of time in the car).The only negative for me was the quality of the restaurant reviews. For example, the book suggested that while Ray's Boathouse was more about the view than the food, the food was still good. It wasn't. We had much better luck using Tripadvisor and Yelp for restaurants. Other than that, though, we were really pleased.

I'm fairly familiar with OR and I can see how most people traveling to places just want the basic info and if so, this book should fit the bill. For those looking for some more in depth stuff, forget this book. It's like most other travel books where the authors just "mailed it in".

I highly recommend this book to anyone visiting or traveling through Oregon. There are excellent maps, guides for nearly every region, every major site, City and town. Everything from food recommendation,Hikes, history, to sites you probably couldn't have found without a guide.

Fodor's Oregon was exactly what I needed to plan our trip to Portland next month. I love how it divides the state up into regions and then divides the city into neighborhoods. I always purchase a Fodor's guidebook for every vacation.

The book is perhaps too all encompassing. A confusing and poorly indexed look at a huge geographic and cultural expanse. I spent 30 minutes trying to find items specific to Vancouver Washington and turned up nothing excepted a confusing Portland section. The incredibly small number of reccomnendations for each 'area' ensures my vacation planning will take place online. The writing of the content is great. But it can't save the poor 'pull outs' with tips like: 'top reasons to go to the Pacific Northwest--'hip cities'. All in all disappointing.

So I'll admit this review is based on what it isn't and not what it is. It's mostly a personal shortcoming. I can't read sheet music and that's what this is. I thought it would be tab, but I guess I should have read the description better. As a sheet music book though, I'm assuming it's tops.

The book was wonderful. The guitar chords were easy to read.

I was hoping for the guitar tabs as well, nonetheless, excellent book, missing the star for the lack of tabs, otherwise, go for it.

This is a good book for someone who has no idea on how to plan a memorial service. It has some useful tips and did help me tie up some loose ends so I am glad I purchased it. I had a basic idea of what I wanted in our Celebration of Life so this book was a nice supplement to that.

I had no idea how to go about planning a non-religious celebration of life for our mother who died recently. It was reassuring to find a guide.The memorial itself went very smoothly, and we received many compliments from guests.

Purchased this prior to my husbands death. He did not want a funeral and this gave memany great ideas on how to plan his Celebration of Life. So glad I did. It was a joyous occasion.

It has all the info needed to plan a service. I'm not very far into it yet but it looks very helpful so far.

The book gives some thought provoking ideas on making last arrangements; I was already aware of most of the suggestions having been a social worker with disabled and vulnerable adults, and hospice volunteer who was with clients in their final hours. However for someone new to death and dying this might be more helpful. All in all, I did get a couple of ideas for my mother's funeral.

Every family should have this little book on the bookshelf for when they need it. I wish I'd had this straight-forward, thoughtful and easy to follow resource when I was planning the memorial service for my mother. Faith Moore gracefully takes the reader through the various options available to people who wish to plan their own services, or to help the bereaved create a remembrance celebration that they feel does honor and justice to their loved one.The is also a workbook, helping us sort through our feelings and wishes about a topic that no one really wants to tackle, yet all of us must at some time. So, why not do so with the guidance of a compassionate, careful expert like this author?

Faith Moore is inspiring in providing a creative and elegant way to plan the celebration of your own life or to make that of a loved one more memorable. As always, Faith shows how it can be done with elegance and individuality to create a way to enhance the memory for friends and family members.
