This series is so much fun! I love reading it with my 6 year old. It's almost like a "Harry potter" type story but about ponies attending a magic academy. The story line is compelling for both kids and grown ups. Great read!

Based upon my appreciation of Mr. Hornfischer’s superb Neptune’s Inferno, I pre-ordered this book as soon as I learned it was to be published. My anticipation of another thoughtful and elegant account of our Navy’s role in the defeat of Japan was not disappointed. In the interest of complete disclosure, I will say that I was taken off guard by the book’s title. I had focused on “The Fleet at Flood Tide” and was surprised to find that the book includes much information that does not relate to the to “the Fleet.” The detailed descriptions of what the Marines endured ashore in subduing the Marianas and the high drama of the flight of the Enola Gay provide an eloquent and persuasive coda to what it took to end a hopelessly savage war and avoid the more brutal “peace” that would have been the inevitable result of a longer war.Among the author’s achievements is his compelling case for the use of the atomic bomb. By 1944-45, it was clear that Japan had lost the war; yet, her leaders refused to accept reality, and many Japanese and American lives were needlessly lost. The author explains how conquest of Tinian in the Marianas and the development of the B-29 provided the means to attack the Japanese homeland regularly. The success of the Manhattan Project added a weapon so devastating that the Japanese finally acknowledged the inevitable. Mr. Hornfischer’s account of the way these momentous events played out provides some new details about how they were perceived by the Japanese that are very worthwhile. His account of the how the Japanese literally fought to the last man in the Marianas includes descriptions from the Japanese point of view that are illuminating. But what of the Fleet? The author includes a thorough description of the Battle of the Philippine Sea and its significance in the eventual defeat of Japan. He also includes some informative descriptions of how the fleet supported the landings. Later he provides a cursory treatment of Leyte Gulf and the taking of Iwo Jima and Okinawa – including the impact of the Kamikazes. Yet to be frank, I finished the book thinking that the coverage of these momentous events had been a bit slighted. I believe I understand the author’s intent to focus on the pivotal role played by the conquest of the Marianas, but on balance, I would have preferred a second volume to give these other details more attention. Mr. Hornfischer is such a good writer that a second volume would have been welcome. In a book of this breadth, a few mistakes or omissions are inevitable. I generally agreed with his portrayal of Terrible (Kelly) Turner as an irascible genius, but I think it would be fairer to fault him with oversights in the days before Pearl Harbor while he was still back in Washington rather than to blame him for the debacle at the Battle of Savo Island. In any case, I could not make sense out of his statement on p. 28 that Admiral King exonerated Turner in a letter to CNO Harold Stark. By August 1942, the date of this disaster, Betty Stark had been shunted aside to command our meager naval forces in Europe (COMNAVER), and Admiral King was clearly at the top of the Navy’s totem pole as COMINICH -- Commander in Chief, the senior uniformed officer in the Navy. Accordingly, King would not have written to Stark after Savo Island to exonerate Turner. Something is amiss here. The battleship Tennessee, even her post-Pearl Harbor modernization, had a single catapult on her somewhat narrow fantail – not two (p. 89). MacArthur was driven out of the Philippines in 1942, not 1941 (p. 330). The description of “Ultra radio transcripts” (p. 420) should have been to “Magic,” the name given to our code breaking in the Pacific. “Ultra” refers to the British breaking of the German codes. I don’t recall Nagumo ever having had battleship Nagato as his flagship (p. 492), at least during the critical moments of the War. She was Yamato’s flagship during the raid on Pearl Harbor before Yamato was commissioned. Finally, the exceptionally able gunnery enthusiast, Willis A. Lee, was a Vice Admiral, not a Rear Admiral during the periods covered in the book. If details are important enough to mention his precise rank, then they should be correct. These minor points aside, I liked Mr. Hornfischer’s description of the key commanders. Among other things, I share his admiration for Admiral Spruance and was glad to see him get the credit he is due. The plentiful and useful maps were another strength of the book. Although this was not the book I was expecting from its title, it is a very fine work of history. One of the rewarding things about reading history is to encounter a new and different perspective on events that were already familiar supported by new sources of information. Mr. Hornfischer’s book does precisely that and is very rewarding to either a generalist or a serious student.Opinions about using the atomic bomb, the attack on Pearl Harbor, comfort women, and savagery with prisoners of war will haunt any discussion of the Pacific War forever. Nevertheless, because of the way the war ended and the reconciliation that was possible after it, the United States and Japan are trusted and valued allies to this day. There are no good wars, but some wars have good endings. Mr. Hornfischer makes a persuasive case that the Pacific War was one of them.

When this book first arrived last week, I was somewhat dismayed to learn that, while telling the tale of the final days of the Pacific Theatre in World War II, the three leaders it chose to focus on more deeply in this work were different from the ones I expected. He chose on Raymond Spruance, commander of the Fifth Fleet, Kelly Turner, commander of the transports that landed the amphibious forces ( Marines and Army), and Paul Tibbets, who flew the history-changing first atomic bombing mission. While these seemed disjointed choices at first, they proved to be quite smart. These are major players in the campaigns to capture Saipan and the Marianas, and with his intense examination of the Japanese will to resist, one is left with the obvious conclusion that an invasion of Japan proper would have been bloody beyond measure. Hornfischer does not proselytize, but lays out the facts of this critical period concisely and clearly. He does so with his usual engaging and readable narrative. Like his previous works, Hornfischer does not disappoint in this production that deals with the final throes of the Japanese attempt to rule the Pacific. Once again, I am reminded how grateful we all must be to the warriors of World War II.

The subtitle of this fine narrative history is apt: "America at Total War in the Pacific, 1944-1945." This title was released four days ago and I've already read all 602 pages. Yes, it's military history, and naval history in particular, so you might wonder why a food historian and cookbook author reads it. It is possibly a glimpse into a future that never happened to me. In 1961, my father, a former Navy Lieutenant Commander working for the Department of Defense in ELINT, wanted me to go to the Naval Academy, so my mom, who was a Republican committeewoman, leaned on Rep. Joel T. Broyhill to appoint her son. He appointed me, all right, but to the Air Force Academy. I had already fallen in love with the University of Virginia, so I made a deal with dad. I would enroll in the Navy NROTC program at UVa. I lasted three semesters before realizing that the military was not my calling. However, I was number one in my class in Naval Science. Hence my quick read of this book. This gung-ho account of the end of the War of the Pacific has real characters, occasional dialogue, and a plot with omniscient narration, so it's a tense and emotional read. If you were Paul Tibbets, who piloted the Enola Gay B-29 that dropped the A-Bomb "Little Boy" on Hiroshima, how would you feel about killing 100,000 civilians? President Truman wondered too. "What do you think?" he asked Tibbets. "Mr. President," he replied, "I think I did what I was told." The president slapped his hand on the table. "You're damn right you did, and I'm the guy who sent you. If anybody gives you a hard time about it, refer them to me."Divided into four parts, Sea, Land, Air, and Earth, author James D. Hornfischer focuses on the high points of military and political strategy that sealed the victory for the Allies in the Pacific, sometimes in gritty and gory detail. Meticulously researched but not academic, this book is my favorite read of 2016--so far.

Review

"The book is well worth reading. Contributing to this are the many elementary examples with which the authors supplement the text ... Anyone who is intensely concerned with Riemmannian geometry will not pass up this book. It is so far without competition and fills a gap in the market." ---- Translated from Jahresbericht der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung

I adopted this text for a new graduate course that I taught on Metric Geometry. The other choice was `Spaces of Nonpositive Curvature' by Bridson and Haefliger.I chose this text because it has exercises, it appears to cover nonpositive andnonnegative curvature in roughly equal proportion, and it's less than half the price of Bridson-Haefliger.Unfortunately, the book has many, many typos. Fortunately, there is an errataconsisting of ten pages that can be found by googling "burago burago ivanov errata".(Actually it's more than just a list of typos: They correct a few false proofs as well). But beware! This list of errors is not complete. My students and I have found other typos as well. Of course, a well-trainedmathematician can get past the typos, but this text is supposed to be for first year graduate students. The writing is also rough in places. For example, polyhedral complexesare not rigorously defined. The style is Russian which I like, but it'snot the best example of this type of writing. The students have told me thatthey avoid reading the text whenever possible. The one redeeming feature may be the exercises. Some of the exercisesare excellent. Also the overall choice of topics is very good. With additional work this could be a great textbook, and (five years later) I am still hoping that theauthors will take the time to go through it at least a couple of more times. For now, I have switched to Bridson-Haefliger. I have abandoned this book.

The authors present a self-contained treatment of the geometry of length spaces. They begin with the definition of length spaces, and by the final chapter cover almost all of the material in the well known survey paper by Burago, Gromov, and Perel'man. Overall, the book provides an interesting and and accessible introduction to an important class of spaces (length spaces arise as limits of sequences of Riemannian manifolds). I found it exceedingly interesting that one can build analogues of most of the concepts from Riemannian geometry using only the intrinsic metric. There is great emphasis on exposition in this book; Burago makes great effort to motivate definitions and provide interesting examples. The reader is cautioned, however, that numerous typographic errors are to be found (some in fundamental definitions). My only complaint is the uneveness of the treatment. The authors spend two chapters developing some of the basic tools of Riemannian geometry in the setting of surfaces in R^3. It seems unlikely to me that a reader who is interested in length spaces would not already have at least passing aquaintence with Riemannian geometry. This, however, is a minor point, and I can recommend the book very highly.

I am an undergraduate math student, and I encountered this book as the primary background text for a summer project in geometry. I had just been through a year or so of studying manifolds and basic Riemannian geometry, but it was my first substantial exposure to the length space approach to geometry as well as notions like curvature/Alexandrov spaces, polyhedral spaces, the hyperbolic plane, and quasi-isometries. It does a number of things very well, but it does possess some comparitively minor flaws that are nonetheless worth noting.Pros: The definitions and examples are very clearly explained and in a manner highly suitable for self-study. The exercises are challenging and they do a great deal to get the reader's hands dirty and force him/her to really process the main ideas. Most of the proofs are very well written, and the authors do a good job of demonstrating the appropriate tools and outlining the best approaches in the proofs and the examples. The authors also do a good job in general of summoning the neccessary background material without dwelling on review too extensively; you should probably have already seen the Hausdorff measure and the fundamental group before you pick up this book, but the book recalls the main concepts and results (with helpful exercises) in case your memory has faded or don't have much experience with such notions. Even the review of Riemannian geometry, which might be too long for some, is appropriate to firmly establish notation and because hyperbolic geometry and Riemannian curvature are so central to the topic of the text.Cons: Some of the key definitions and proofs (such as the triangle criterion for nonpositive/nonnegative curvature) contain typos, but for the most part they are sufficiently obvious that a critical reader will be able to figure out how to fix them with minimal confusion. While most of the proofs are easy to follow (especially the more technical proofs where lack of clarity would be a serious problem), some of the more visually-oriented proofs are very poorly written and there are precious few diagrams to compensate - see, for example, the example involving the curvature of cones over circles of various lengths. Also, the book could use some more exercises to accompany the more technical constructions. The exercises that it has are very well-chosen for the purpose of forcing the reader to internalize the relavent concepts and techniques, but some basic definition chasing to help process the harder definitions would make the process go smoother.

About the Author

Muammar Gaddafi ( 1942 – 20 October 2011), commonly known as Colonel Gaddafi, was a Libyan revolutionary, politician, and political theorist. He governed Libya as Revolutionary Chairman of the Libyan Arab Republic from 1969 to 1977 and then as the "Brotherly Leader" of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya from 1977 to 2011. He was initially ideologically committed to Arab nationalism and Arab socialism, but he came to rule according to his own Third International Theory. Gaddafi was born near Sirte to an impoverished Bedouin family. He became an Arab nationalist while at school in Sabha, later enrolling in the Royal Military Academy, Benghazi. Within the military he founded a revolutionary cell which, in a 1969 coup, deposed the Western-backed Senussi monarchy of Idris. Now in power, Gaddafi converted Libya into a republic governed by his Revolutionary Command Council. Ruling by decree, he ejected both Italian colonists and Western military bases from Libya while strengthening ties to Arab nationalist governments—particularly Gamal Abdel Nasser's Egypt—and unsuccessfully advocating Pan-Arab political union. An Islamic modernist, he introduced sharia as the basis for the legal system and promoted "Islamic socialism". The oil industry was nationalised, with the increasing state revenues used to bolster the military, fund foreign revolutionaries, and implement social programs emphasising house-building, healthcare, and education projects. In 1973, he initiated a "Popular Revolution" with the formation of General People's Committees, purported to be a system of direct democracy, but retained personal control over major decisions. He outlined his Third International Theory that year, publishing these ideas in The Green Book. In 1977, Gaddafi transformed Libya into a new socialist state called the Jamahiriya ("state of the masses"). During the 1970s and 1980s, Libya's unsuccessful border conflicts with Egypt and Chad, support for foreign militants, and alleged responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing left it increasingly isolated on the international stage. Amid the 2011 Arab Spring, protests against widespread corruption and unemployment broke out in eastern Libya. The situation descended into civil war, in which NATO intervened militarily on the side of the anti-Gaddafist National Transitional Council (NTC). The government was overthrown and Gaddafi, who had retreated to Sirte, was captured and killed by NTC militants.

Gaddafi's ideas are utopian, appear to come more from Bedouin culture than from Islam, and strongly rejecting both communism and western politics and culture. He believes in a socialism driving by common people and not government organized or enforced.Though a Muslim, he does not promote Islam, except in a statement that a nation should have a single religion. He promotes natural culture, and Islam claims to be the natural religion. Many ideals are proclaimed, including rights of minorities, natural rights of women and children, including the need for children to be with their mothers. That contrasts with the Islamic standard that Fathers have total right and control. He assumes that in time people will choose this utopia, and so makes no proposal for enforcing it.There is no impetus for putting this utopia into place by force, but lacks a clear statement condemning force.I chose this book because I am trying, as a Christian and political conservative, to understand Muslim Thinking. This book is an example of Muslim thinking, but far from and much in contrast to much of Mid-East ideology. It seems great foolishness for Western nations to deal with Mid-East threats while making little effort to understand how leaders and people in these nations think about life and social and political issues. The result is bad actions that backfire and increase the problems.Great leaders in Islam who had the good of the people in mind rather than ideologies of self-promotion and stolen riches include Ataturk, Mossadech, Sadat, and Gaddafi. The later three were killed for their goodness.Gaddafi had his bad years, but had been turning Westward. He discarded Libya's nuclear program. The Green Book shows thinking that could only be repulsive to Islamists. The resulted in a rebel movement in Libya, which was foolishly supported by the American government. To support a rebel movement in Muslim countries can only result in prolonging the conflict and causing great suffering and killing. Even the worst of dictators serve the country better by quickly putting down rebellions rather than making the country into a Syria. So, the U.S. killed Gaddafi, killed the best peace movement in Africa and the Mid-East, promoting the "Arabic Spring" and conflict and destruction that can only ultimately benefit the Muslim Brotherhood, as they take advantage of the chaos. Is the Obama administration the best friend the Muslim Brotherhood ever had? Deliberately or foolishly? They killed Gaddafi. Possibly the worst crime of the century.

I haven't read this book yet but I got it very fast!!Our brother was assassinated for trying to unite Africa against Edomite (Rome) empires. But regardless, the children of Israel are finally waking up from sleep, all thanks to the Most High Ahayah bahashem Yashaya wa Ruwach!Quam Yasharala!! 😉😄😄😀👊✊✊

If he had not been murdered .the desert would have blossomed .

Gaddafi had some good ideas, too bad he was killed by NATO allies.

A great and interesting read for anyone who enjoys politics science and governmental/societal structuring.

This is a great book if you want to understand the politics of Libya

Very informative

A great gift for my history buff.

Worth reading to view another perspective of a film festival. Written like a documentary with interviews from participants in the festival. Good for other student filmmakers and anyone who wants to become a filmmaker. The dvd alone has enough to give you an eyeful of original filmmaking.

For the person who simply likes unique films - this was well worth buying. A great behind the scenes look into how student films are made and the challenges they face and overcome. A nice variety; action, laugh-out-loud dark comedy, poignant drama. I wish there were more student film festival books/DVD's like this.

I havent played my violiln in over 20 yrs, This book is fantastic. Love how it ties in with their on-line videos/photos. Very unique. It allowed me to reacquaint with me long lost instrument. It would also allow a novice to start from scratch.I highly recommend it.

This book is very thorough, almost could be used to teach yourself.Very helpful audio and video companion files online. It's still a good idea to get in-person instruction to get precise advise on things like properly holding the bow.But it is a perfect companion for honing your craft between in-person lessons.

book is very helpful, clear and concise, there was no DVD/CD included, which the book refers several times

I’m so far liking it. However it doesn’t tell me how to read sheet music which I really need to learn. Sheet music confuses me and I thought this would have easy ways of understanding but it doesn’t. Other than that. Its the perfect book.

I got this for myself because I don't know a thing about violins and can't afford the luxury of a teacher. The book has been helpful thus far and I am happy with my purchase.

A good start to learning. I'm only half way through but I can play all the songs so far in the book. My wife even said she couldn't tell from the other room if it was the included online sound bites or my playing.

This is a must have for those who are starting to play the violin for first time and even better for those who are learning in their mature after 50 years. HIghly recommended with super support online. I'm ahead of my first lesson because of the book!

For a complete novice, this is a great book to introduce you to the violin.
