With my usual dose of trepidation, I selected the newbie. 90% of all books written aren't worth ruining a peaceful day of fishing, but without wading in you just can't know if any given book, or author, is worth ruining the tranquility of the water and the pole. Given that this is the first book in an as (of now) incomplete series, with zero reviews, and the authors first book (self published), this should be a pile of trash. I try to refrain from reading too many "new" books, because they so often lead to disappointment. Let me count the ways I was disappointed.~~Ok, that was a short list, wasn't it? The fact of the matter is, this was a very good book, first effort or otherwise. This is not high fantasy, or epic, or world altering literature. It is a very serviceable YA coming of age story that touches on some themes of loneliness and social ineptitude that occasionally hit a little too close to home. There are fun moments, and although you know the author has plans for a series, a few moments towards the end that just might turn out very badly for one or more of the main characters.I can't in good conscious rate this book at five stars - there were no scenes that gave me goosebumps or made me wonder at the amazing turn of events. I do however feel that in a world of one, two, and three star books, the occasional four star is exemplary, and only a few small steps from being among the absolute best there is. To that end, there were some textual errors. Some of the other reviews now out have mentioned those, and I have seen a comment from the author on a public forum that he is correcting them and uploading a fixed edition for all future readers. Otherwise, this is a fun, light, quick book, and once I started I was inclined to hurry up and finish the story so I could bask in the warm glow of finishing a good book.Maybe the only questions now: Where do we go now that we have been "Into the Labyrinth," and how long do we have to wait for more of Hugh and his friends?For those of us who number among the prudes:Profanity was very light. There was one scene of heated anger towards the end with coarse language that didn't appear anywhere else.Sex was not mentioned or even intimated.Violence was light to medium. There were monsters exploding with ichor, and most of the main characters took wounds of one sort or another in the course of combat towards the end of the book. Also there are a few scenes of bullying against the protagonist.

Hugh of Emblin is a whining, unbalanced boy. He had a difficult childhood. As a result, he feels worthless all the time. He has no friends and no talent.His mana reserves are big though. A shame he can’t cast any spells. Magical academies expect it from a student.To Hugh’s surprise, an Errant Librarian Mage chooses him and two other unpromising students as his apprentices. They learn to trust each other and develop arcane skills. Who knows, maybe they’re not a group of losers?Into the Labyrinth relies heavily on tropes. A country bumpkin tries to find his place in a magical academy where he’s bullied. He doesn’t realise how special he is until an eccentric teacher tutors him and unblocks his potential. He discovers people can like him and finds his inner strength.For coming of age fantasy, it’s as formulaic as it gets. On the other hand, tight, straightforward plot and likeable (but underdeveloped) characters entertained me. I felt motivated to turn the pages and learn more about their adventures.A complex magic system deserves praise and will appeal to hard magic systems’ enthusiasts. An interesting bestiary of creatures available for contract added much colour to the world although it felt a bit like a filler.Characters, especially secondary ones, remain underdeveloped and lack complexity. Observing Hugh gaining confidence made me feel good, but he still has a lot of work to do. A school bully is just that - a jerk. Of course, he comes from a noble family and is crazily talented - I would say we’ve all seen it. Probably million times.The writing feels utilitarian and flat, but it delivers the story well and makes it easily accessible. Another pass, or two, of editing, would clear the typos and overused words (everyone grins in this book. All the time). It would give ItL the feel of a finished product.All said, the book is short and entertaining. It has flaws, but also some charm. I think it’ll do as a palate cleanser between longer / more complex books.

Then I realized, i should be the CEO of a marketing firm.This book is so full of bragging and at the same time there is zero useful applicable information in it. The only people who might like this is someone that loves to brag and wants to be like Ferrazzi or one that never even heard the term networking.

Keith Ferrazzi’s Never Eat Alone tackles one of the most important aspects of getting ahead in the professional world today: networking. Ferrazzi’s approach, however, takes a different turn than most networking books. His emphasis on creating connections, as opposed to blindly networking just because its considered important, is informative and distinctive.Ferrazzi begins by laying out his experience with networking in the first section – but he doesn’t call it “networking.” Instead, Ferrazzi calls it “connecting.” He writes that “like business itself, being a connector is not about managing transactions, but about managing relationships.” He stresses that while some gather names and phone numbers just to add contacts to their list, the most beneficial way to connect is to share knowledge, resources, time, energy, friends, associates, empathy and compassion. By doing this, value is provided for these connections – and perhaps most importantly, your value is increased in their eyes as well.This first section is a smooth and engaging introduction to the book. Ferrazzi’s conversational tone makes his suggestions easy to follow and understand. He writes often about his personal experiences with networking, which strengthens his argument of the importance of connecting. Without connections, he would not have made it to where he is now. His impressive education came out of the relationships he and his father developed with connections, which definitely drives home his argument.Ferrazzi lays out how to actually make these connections in the second section. He writes that the first step to connecting with someone is to do your research. He suggests Googling them, reading their work history on LinkedIn, checking out their Twitter, and reading information about their company or work. The next step is getting their contact information. Ferrazzi suggests starting with those already in your network: relatives, current colleagues, customers and clients, neighbors, past connections from school, former teachers, etc. Ferrazzi writes, “the real challenge isn’t tracking anymore… Our challenge these days is to figure out, in the mass of contacts we’ve collected, which ones matter” (76). His approach to building a network is to reach out to those you already have relationships with, and to build on them.This section is helpful, but nothing stood out as exceptionally different from other networking books. Networking is meeting people through other connections and cultivating relationships – Ferrazzi just stresses its importance in this section.In the third section, Ferrazzi discusses building on these connections. He breaks down three motivations that he tends to find in people: making money, finding love, or changing the world. He says that “the only way to get people to do anything is to recognize their importance and thereby make them feel important” (175). He also emphasizes building connections in different areas, and being able to “parcel out as much information, contacts, and goodwill to as many people – in as many different worlds – as possible” (188). He highlights the importance of meeting people and connecting, but building on these connections and stretching them to all aspects of business and life.This section is informative, but Ferrazzi’s reasoning seems manipulative. The purpose of networking is to gain value from those we connect with, but Ferrazzi seems to imply that the only reason to help others is because of the future benefit you may receive from them. For Ferrazzi, connecting with others is ultimately for your gain. His approach seems to disregard the fact that you might receive something other than just professional gain from helping someone.The fourth section focuses on “Connecting in the Digital Age.” Ferrazzi tackles the wealth of knowledge and people that we have at our disposal because of technology. He writes that even though you can be bombarded with information on your social network, you can make use of the content by curating and structuring it to what you want to see, and what will help you. He also says that in sharing your content, you have to give people “something useful.” “Give them an article, a film trailer, a restaurant review. Something that allows for more communication than 140 characters, introduces them to something new, and gives them an action” (242-243).This section is beneficial in laying out all the ways for you to make use of the technology at your fingertips. According to Ferrazzi, “the world is your stage… Look the part; live the part” (297).Overall, Never Eat Alone is an informative networking book. Its main idea is innovative – connecting and sharing as opposed to just collecting important names in your network – compared to the majority of other networking books. Ferrazzi, in his conversational tone, makes the 376 pages go fast. The only downside to Ferrazzi’s approach is his push to do all of this – connect, share, network – just because in the end, it helps you advance the most. His method comes across as slightly egotistical, but it still provides you with helpful tips to connecting and branding yourself.

As a 20 yr professional and manager I wasn't sure of how relevant this book would be. Frankly I found it to be excellent! I have ranked it as 5 stars, something I rarely do.Ferrazzi covers a range of topics which are as relevant for those veterans in the workforce as those starting out. One item I found especially refreshing was the approach to networking. A buzzword these days, I see millenials and others "lunching" constantly and asking to join my LinkedIn or Facebook and then never hear from them again. Ferrazzi does an excellent job explaining that networking has to be about adding value to the other party and maintaining that relationship over time. Yes, we all leverage our networks to get things done. The point is to ensure it is a two way street.I also found his discussion of how to get value from conferences extremely interesting. I had learned many of the lessons the hard way over the year but I had never heard them so well articulated- come prepared, understand your objectives, who do you want to meet, what are your intersect points, volunteer to help organize, understand the schedule and layout and finally, and most important, follow up.This book is an excellent read and a marked up copy now sits on my core reference shelf. Whether you are starting out or a veteran, this is worth a read.

Ferrazzi is no doubt an expert in his field but, my goodness, does he like to brag about himself. There are good messages in this book, but you have to dig through painfully long passages of self-fellatio in order to get to the actual points. The authors boastful tone is extremely off putting and his anecdotes reek of egomania.

5 years later, I'm still recommending this book to people to read.This book is for the ambitious looking for a social edge in working their way into the successful portion of the working class. It's a blend of inspiration, motivation, pragmatic advice, and sometimes painfully boring passages. If you have the skills to recognize impertinent chapters that would bore rather than aid you, and find the juicy stuff that you know you can learn from, this book can grow your career the same way it grew my own.Good luck and have fun ;-)

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to pack up and drive an RV across the U.S.A. with your dog, you can do it. Just read Benoit Denizet-Lewis' novel "Travels with Casey." Casey is Benoit's yellow Labrador Retriever. Benoit is a writer for the New York Times Magazineand a professor or Writing, Literature and Publishing at Emerson College. He rented an RV and spent 4 months driving from Provincetown, Massachusetts to Florida to Texas, California, the Pacific Northwest and back toward the east through Montana, the Dakotas, Chicago, the Ohio Valley and back to New England. He created a Facebook page for the trip and met a lot of fascinating people along the way. Throughout the book he shared stories and experiences of his own and of others he met. He introduces the reader to some really fascinating people, from dog rescuers to dog communicators and trainers.He also explores some of the hardest places for dogs from Native American reservations to kill shelters in Texas and feral dog problems in St. Louis. It really gives you a good look at dogs around the U.S. This is a fun book, and all dog parents should read it. You'll learn a lot and feel like you're driving with Benoit and Casey.

First, let it be said that I am not a "dog person"-- in fact, I'm allergic to dogs, although I think they are cute, and I certainly don't want to see them, or any animal for that matter, treated badly. So why did I buy "Travels With Casey"? Because so many of my friends have pets (a few have cats, but most have dogs), and I am eager to try to understand their passion, or obsession. "Travels With Casey" definitely gave me some insights I didn't have before, although the insights were often about the owner, Benoit Denizet-Lewis, rather than about Casey, or Rezzy (the other dog he later adopted).Denizet-Lewis has written a book in which he (along with his dog) goes out on the road and meets a wide variety of dog owners: some seem to regard their pets as if they were human children, some believe their pets have amazing abilities, some are just happy to have the companionship a pet can offer. During his travels, the author meets famous dog psychology experts like Cesar Millan, as well as owners of pet shops and kennels, people who socialize at their local dog park, people who rescue strays and try to help them find homes, a homeless couple who love dogs, etc. The vignettes are well-written and fascinating to read.At times, however, Denizet-Lewis uses the book as therapy, perhaps excessively so. His insecurities are as much a part of the book as his interest in dogs and dog owners: he often wonders whether he is the right kind of owner, and worries about whether his dog really likes him. He has concerns about whether his friends, and especially the men he wants to date, will like his dog. He meets a pet photographer and hopes he doesn't seem like someone who can't get his dog to behave. He is at his strongest when just telling the stories of what dogs mean to the various people he encounters; Denizet-Lewis is an excellent story-teller, and even a non-dog owner like me easily got caught up in the devoted guy who rescues strays, or the tragic plight of "reservation dogs" who have been abandoned. But on the other hand, I am not a fan of pop psychology nor pseudo-science (the author talks, at one point, to a "pet psychic"), so those vignettes were not as meaningful to me. That said, if you love pets, or if you are (like me) fascinated by the people who own them, this book is a good read, and well worth your time.

It took me a little over two days to read this book...I loved it! For dog lovers everywhere Travels with Casey is a fun light antidote to those everyday problems we face as pet parents. Traveling with a dog is hard enough but picking up a stray along the way becomes an adventure that you can only dream of. parks that don't allow you to being your fury friend to city parks especially designed for our fur babies make an enjoyable read. Can't wait for sequel to find out how Casey and Rezzy are doing!

I love books about dogs and this one was interesting. Benoit came to realize how much he and Casey belong together even before they made a new friend. It was interesting to see how people in different areas of the country view their dogs. The author takes you on a wonderful look at our country through dogs. Worth the read!

This is a good, enjoyable read NOT particularly about a man and his relationship with his dog. It lightly touches on many different places they travel and different dog crazy things we do...I enjoyed it (because I am dog crazy), but I found my self wishing that the book delved a little deeper into things. I didn't really ever feel that he truly experienced things, just observed them from a narrator standpoint.But, the book flows well and does touch on a lot of different dog adventures.

I had high hopes for this book but it didn't deliever. I thought it was just ok. There were some great moments like when he was saving dogs in East St. Louis, and when he was actually talking about dogs. The parts of the book that I couldn't stand was he was talking about his love life and hookups. That had NOTHING to do with dogs!! I would give the book 4 stars if he left his personal life out of it.

I am a dog lover. Benoit was recently on a local TV program so I bought the Kindle version . I wish he would have had some times with Pugs. Winston, my Pug would have enjoyed playing with Casey. The program he was on, I rarely sit down to watch TV at that time, so I suppose it was meant for me to read this story. I wish I could take such a journey with my Pug.

This book was ok. The book was about dogs but it seemed the theme ran more about the author and his issues than the dog or dogs. I thought it was too expensive for what I got out of the book.

I bought this book before buying my first iPhone. I hoped it would help me setting up the iPhone and getting familiar with it. I knew it was a big book, but I expected it to be sufficiently well organized to permit me to read only the necessary parts and then come back later for more. The book did not meet my expectations.While it has a section explaining how to choose an iPhone which I did not need, it keeps mum on the beginning and important set-up decisions. To follow the very first explanations on how to use the iPhone one has to have it already activated, so I had to guess my settings and leave to the future how to optimize them. After that I spend several hours over a couple of days trying to wade through the first verbose chapters and eventually gave up and proceeded to explore the features I need in the iPhone by trial and error.While tempted to thrash the book, I still kept it for when I will have much more time on my hands, hoping to find at least a few useful tips.

I purchased this for my 78 year old mother, who has her first smart phone -- and it is an Apple. She had no familiarity with Apple products (she is well-versed in Microsoft Windows) and she has found this book easy to understand/follow and very helpful. Again, however, my mother is a retired CPA who is very experienced with computers. So I can't say how this will work for people who have no idea about computers.

This book is somewhat helpful, but would have been perfect if there had been a glossary. Every other word is tech-speak, a language that I do not know. What does "sync" mean? Exactly what is a "message?" A phone call, a text, a voice mail---or something else? What, exactly do you do to your finger to "flick" it? Also, rather than describe the icon being discussed in a new section, a large picture of it would do far better. I had to go back to the picture of the "home page," get out my magnifying glass to read the teensy text under each icon, then draw a picture of it in the chapter I was reading to match the description, for future reference and review..

Sure wish there were move pictures showing where the things they are writing about are located.

Excellent book. Very clear instructions and very easy to understand. It was not wordy or fuzzy at all. Extremely good value.

Using the book, I have been able to discover some of the many features of my iPhone. This is my first experience with this kind of phone.My children and grandchildren are willing to help me learn about the phone.I figured it would be better if I learned by myself using the book.

"Lovely" is clearly not the correct attribute for a book on the diagnosis of mental illness. But this book does come in very handy, both for the seasoned clinician who might need quick reminders, and for younger colleagues, as well as the generally interested reader, who wants to get a comprehensive view into the otherwise complex labyrinth of mental diagnoses.Similarly to the loosening of distinct categories evident in DSM-5, the author goes further in deconstructing the otherwise too firm diagnostic categorizations.And the Jungian chapter at the end is a bonus!The book is highly recommended, and, in fact, makes for enjoyable reading.Erel Shalit, author of Cycle of Life: Themes and Tales of the Journey.

Im getting my BS in psychology and took a class specifically on the DSM V. I learned nothing and put no effort in and got 100%. Since I plan on pursuing a masters degree in psych, it's kind of important to have a solid basis on the DSM, so I took it upon myself to buy some supplementary material to actually learn something. I learned more in the first 10 pages than my professor every taught me. (gotta love the American education system! that class cost me $4,000!) I also love how the perspective is not black or white, and not you have this disorder, or not, rather its on a spectrum where every person has a place somewhere whether in a danger zone or not. It's a lot more inclusive and a lot less stigmatizing of a perspective. the illustrations help so much

I loved the way this book was organized by looking at spectrums providing succinct clarity. The illustrations were very helpful providing me (a visual adult learner) a picture of what each disorder looks like.

So glad I read this book! I have read other references on the new DSM and attended professional workshops on the changes, and this book made the most sense of all. I am recommending to others who work in the field.

Helpful guide for beginners if they are looking for way to conceptualize diagnosis and treatment but leaves out entire chapters of the new DSM-5

Don't let the cover fool you. This is a great book! It has are the key information you need for proper diagnosis and thorough explanation of criteria. I use it as a quick reference when visiting and evaluating clients. Its design actually makes it kid-friendly and nonthreatening to my child clients any time that I've had to reference it in front of them, which is something I did not even think about at the time of purchase!

I am a student majoring in psychology and this is a must have. This book is a simplified version of the DSM-5, which I also have on order. Love this item as it explains the different disorders in a manner that allows you to retain the information that you have learned in a better fashion.

This is an interesting but very poignant and at times, distressing tale. The book was well-researched and written and the photos were a great enhancement to the story but be warned; this is not a book to read for entertainment. However, for a student of history and human nature it is very worthwhile. This was a book that I had to walk away from on occasion because I felt sorrow and anger on behalf of the characters. Still, I was involved in the narrative and it never occurred to me to abandon the story. In the end I finished with admiration for the resilience and resourcefulness of the Ovitzs and appreciation of the enduring human and family values that led to their amazing survival during their imprisonment as well as throughout their lives. This story is a glimpse into a widespectrum of individuals and societies of noble, ignoble, and horrendously evil character.

This book was extremely heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. I watched the documentary "seven dwarves of Auschwitz" and I had to know more about this incredible family. They truly loved being artists and devoted a lot of time to cater to their audiences. I have read a few memoirs about the holocaust, this one one showed how a group could somehow pull together and survive. They managed to stay positive even when they had no idea what was going to happen to them.

After watching the PBS special about a performing family of dwarves, The Lilliput Troupe, sent to Auschwitz during the holocaust, I had to read this book about the Ovitz family. Their tiny size made them special targets of the infamous Dr. Mengele's attention, who subjected them to near-constant measurements & painful experiments, but ultimately their unusual size may have kept them from the gas chamber. The book is an inspiring page-turner about the life of this tiny indomitable family. But I was surprised reading elsewhere about a controversy involving their Auschwitz survival--evidently some fellow concentration camp survivors bitterly viewed the Ovitz family as near pets of Dr. Mengele.The 2 authors have done a wonderful job putting the family's story in book form. Not to be missed!

What an amazing book and what an amazing family! I was so impressed with the Ovitz family. They were such a self reliant family before and after the war, but to survive Auschwitz as well as they did was incredible. Talk about strength and courage. I especially liked the comparisons between the Ovitz family quotes and other authors of different events in Auschwitz because they didn't agree. I think that made it a better book, since all the versions of events didn't have to agree. I highly recommend this book, I only wish I had bought it sooner.

Well written account of people with more courage than I could ever hope for. It takes you just far enough into the evil and sadistic minds of Mengele and his comrads to the point you want to scream, and reminds you, these victims of their experiments were real people. The millions were real people.Very sobering on many levels.

Just ordered this a few weeks ago as soon as I found out it exsisted and I wasn't sorry. I liked reading about the past, even tho it was a nightmare for so many. It gets you to thinking, how can so many people deny what happened with so much proof? I guess they just don't want to admit how horrible human beings can be to another. That's what this book does for you, it gets you to thinking.

I had read this book in paperback a few years ago that belonged to a friend. I can't describe what a great book this is....I don't have the words.What a amazing family these people were!!! To have suffered such horrible conditions because of a monster.It is well written and after reading the paperback I wanted their story on my kindle.It was well worth the money.I did read it again and I feel there are seven shining stars in heaven together looking down on us all.

This is one of the most interesting Holocaust stories that I have read. Here is a family of midgets, Jewish, who are able to survive the Holocaust by allowing themselves to be experimented on and also entertaining the SS troops and officers at the same time. These wonderful people were actually able to help others by bringing them in as members of their family or as members of their troupe. This is a very easy read and very hard to put down. I highly recommend it as an astonishing story of hope and survival and love.
