About the Author

Michelle K. Hosp, PhD, is Associate Professor of Special Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. A nationally known trainer and speaker on problem solving and the use of progress-monitoring data, she has served as Director of the Iowa Reading Research Center and as a trainer with the National Center on Progress Monitoring and the National Center on Response to Intervention, and is currently on the technical review committee for the National Center on Intensive Intervention. Her research focuses on reading and on multi-tiered systems of support/response to intervention (MTSS/RTI) in relation to curriculum-based measurement (CBM) and curriculum-based evaluation (CBE). Dr. Hosp has published numerous articles, book chapters, and books. John L. Hosp, PhD, is Professor of Special Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research focuses on MTSS/RTI, including disproportionate representation of minority students in special education and aligning assessment and instruction, particularly in the areas of CBM and CBE. Dr. Hosp has conducted workshops nationally and has authored over 50 journal articles, book chapters, and books. He is coauthor (with Michelle K. Hosp, Kenneth W. Howell, and Randy Allison) of The ABCs of Curriculum-Based Evaluation. Kenneth W. Howell, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Special Education at Western Washington University. Explorer, anthropologist, and writer, Michel Peissel is a Frenchman who writes in English, speaks Tibetan, and has dedicated his life to investigating the remotest regions of Greater Tibet, with many of his discoveries making news headlines. He has led 26 expeditions of Tibet and made 20 documentary films over the last 40 years. In 1964, he "discovered" the minute kingdom of Mustang, and more recently, in 1994 he led an expedition to find the source of the Mekong River. Beautiful photos of Tibet, which are great for the project I'm working on.

This Himalayan explorer's renowned for his four decades in Greater Tibet. In 2002, this serves as a fitting survey of his twenty-six expeditions, and a teaser for his earlier narratives (reviewed by me) such as from "Mustang" in Cold War Nepal in 1964, a Bhutan facing India's intervention in 1970's "Lords and Lamas," and his stays with the Minaro ("The Ants' Gold") along Kashmir's forbidden zones in the early 1980s."Tibetan Pilgrimage" conveys with his watercolors and his architectural emphasis some of the same terrain. What this large-format collection of his photographs and reports adds is an overview of how the vast open territories, as he has it, demonstrate the youthful vitality and energy that has characterized this realm since it was united under the sixth-century Songsten Gampo around 650. After introducing the land, flora and fauna (pandas gain credit for their Tibetan origins), the people and society (ditto, polo), and the rise of the nation, the early medieval period ushers in the empire that burst forth.Peissel reminds us, if in gentler fashion than some passages in "Pilgrimage," of how later Tibetan progress towards a land wealthy enough to allow first sons to inherit land, but restricted in size and resources so as to steer second and younger sons to study at monasteries. Not cloistered, monks (maybe a third of the male population) were supported by their farming family's plots and in return often returned to help their siblings learn and harvest. This broadens perceptions of Western readers, who may too quickly transfer feudal models of the Church and fealty from Europe to Central Asia.He later critiques the Dalai Lama, starting with the Fifth, who started an unstable domination by Lhasa over the rest of Tibet, beyond the third of the terrain it ruled directly. A particularly lively chapter shows how the Europeans began to enter the guarded kingdoms, or how they tried to. Peissel emphasizes: "Tibet remained one of the few lands in Asia where the Westerners were neither gods nor masters." (172) The outer areas began to be taken over by British and independence-era India, Bhutan, Nepal, China, and Pakistan.Later sections unfold the collapse of the Tibetan kingdom. However, Peissel takes pains to present the Chinese side, and he rightly shifts no small blame to the imbalance of power that gave Lhasa and the Panchen and Dalai Lamas too much control, and too many pro-Chinese advisors who feared Britain as the alternative ally. Soon, Nehru's India was courted by the Communist Chinese to counter any politicking the Dalai Lama in exile might make.As one who witnessed the fate of the Khampa freedom fighters courted before abandoned by the CIA in Mustang during the Cold War, Peissel relates vividly the predicament of those caught on the ground and on borders who could not go along with the elite who appear to continue their "court intrigues" in Dharamsala. "Such people tended to have a greater concern for power and fortune than for prayer, and in the past they had taken their services to the highest bidders, be they Mongol, Manchu or Chinese." The present Dalai Lama by way of his allegiance to the same "monastic theocracy" does not escape diplomatic criticism for the "lack of foresight and for not having established sufficient links with the international community." (203)This tone infuses the near-present illustrations of Tibet poignantly and honestly. Peissel writes of his love for the people and their homeland, but he does not offer a soft-focus perspective in words or imagery. A couple small slips in proofreading (as in "Greek Marco Pallis" when that mountaineer turned mystic scholar was of Greek parentage but Liverpool-born; see my review of "Peaks and Lamas") do not detract from this volume's value. While parts may appear to gloss over his own encounters, they are often quick snippets gleaned from his past books reporting on regions. This book appeared before his death in 2011, more as a capstone for his career. He stays frank, and he lives up here to his life's ambition, to visit and share Tibet with us.While the language and largely Buddhist culture endures under pressures exerted all around its heartland by foreign powers, Peissel ends with guarded optimism for the survival of Tibetan mentalities and customs as its peoples realize the fate of the heartland and the frontiers is connected, by their vulnerability and their necessary flexibility--as its art and architecture symbolizes.

The author, who has explored the area for decades, writes about the geography, people, and especially the history of Tibet, considering not only the present-day boundary of Tibet but the surrounding Himalayan kingdoms that made up a broader, linked, unit. It’s an excellent book. It has some flaws – its treatment of recent history is very brief, and it occasionally has some typos and lapses of clarity – but I’ll give it five stars anyway because (i) its encompassing of “greater Tibet” is fascinating, (ii) its treatment of Tibetan history is clear, concise, and uncommon in books on this subject, and (iii) the photographs are wonderful. I’ve read lots of books on Tibet and nearby areas, and this is one of my favorites. 5 stars. Oct. 2015.

This book differentiates itself from others that I've seen and read about Tibet. If your looking for indepth political comentary on the Chinese-Tibetan struggle you won't find too much here. The focus of this book is more about giving you the reader a sense of the people, the place, and the history behind it.The book, though never going into vast detail, does a good job of presenting many aspects of Tibetan life and culture. It ranges from marriage customs to plateau animal and plant life. It brings together the detail and reliability of the scholar with the varied interests of the traveler. The other reviewer has remarked on the lack of personal stories. While I could see how here and there it might add something to this book, if that's what you're looking for why not go purchase a traveler's account? I personally perfer something a little more systematic and less prone to misinformation.Where this book really sets itself apart is in the respresentation of more outlying parts of the Tibetan kingdom, such as Ladakh, Guge, and Mustang. It is interesting to see how their interaction with other peoples has created physical and cultural differences. (I showed some of the pictures of these people to a Tibetan friend and he just said, "that is not Tibetan", lol).Lastly, but not leastly, there are beautiful pictures in this book. BEAUTIFUL! They are diverse, covering people, landscape, buildings, and some animals too. They are clear and bright, and alone merit the purchase of this book.

Another book by Peissel. This one, much to my syrprise, is atually quite good. Various aspects are presented in self contained chapters. It is also telling for what it doesn't say. For istance, Peissel writes he's been trekking Tibet for the last 40 years. I believe him, but where are his personal experiences in this book? Also he (almost)glosses over the Chinese invasion and the horrors that followed. I guess he needs a visa to visit Tibet in the future... Nonetheless, this is a wonderful book. Great photos and a succinct description oth the country. Well worth the time and money.

About the Author

Yossi Lapid was born in a small town in Romania where toy stores were absent, but snowmen were abundant. The bright white carpet that covered the ground after the first snow-fall always appeared to him like the blank opening page in a magical book still waiting to be written. In his imagination, the imprints of his small feet would become the first words of many fantastic winter adventures. So, it was inevitable perhaps that he would one day write a children's book about a snowman called Paul. However, it was not inevitable that he would write in rhymes, so he wonders what happened, sometimes... As a first-time author, Lapid's multi-volume series titled Snowman Paul won the silver medal in the 2016 Moonbeam Award competition in the best picture book series category. Subsequent volumes in 2017 have won Mom's Choice and Reader's Favorite gold medals. Lapid was previously a college professor with a Ph.D. from Colombia University. He has three children and lives with his wife Susan and a little dog named Sasha in New Mexico.

I love the illustrations in the book. They are so eye-catching and beautiful. The story was sweet. My kids picked up on Dan's disappointment at the beginning and his helpfulness in the story. I enjoyed the rhythm of the story, Kate's determination and the kindness of Dan and Snowman Paul. I recommend this story to those the read to young kids.

The collection related to the theme adds this precious item to the well-known work of‎Joanna Pasek's art and Yosef Lapid's exemplary rhyming. Like the Halloween and Christmas volumes before, this one shows us again the amazing artistry, dedication to each spread and transports us immediately with movement and grace to the magic of ice skating. I actually wished I could frame some of her spreads.Now the other magic. This is the proof that less is more, and that less is by no means simple. Snowman Paul teaches more than Kate to skate. There's a valuable lesson on how to accept a challenge and take a chore to the end and be rewarded for your hard work with help and support of those who understand and love us.

I love all of the books in the Snowman Paul series, and this one is no exception. In this story, Snowman Paul and his friend, Dan team up to help Kate improve her skating skills. On the same day, I ordered two used copies from 2 different sellers. They both arrived as promised...and in near "Bookstore" condition. BONUS...one of them was signed by Mr. Bryson. I had just become aquainted with Bill Bryson months before when I was given his audiobook of "At Home"...which I have in my car and listen to when on the road. I listen to it in short segments as he offers so much information...my mind goes in to overload. I then ordered his "In the Woods" in audio which was delightful and a fairly "quick listen!" He has a huge store of information and a delightful way of sharing it. Even the Dictionary of Troublesome Words will make you smile. I love grammar so I love this book, "albeit" it did not have two of my favorite words included..."ergo" I should only give it 4 stars...but I acquiesced and give it a 5!! I have enjoyed all of his works to this point and hope to add more to my library. If you like words...this is a fun read!

If you love words and the quirky nuances of the English language, you will savor this book. Bryson applies wit and wisdom to every clause. He clears up sticky issues of grammar and syntax likely to bother even the most accomplished writers, and points out shades of meaning that are important but not at all obvious. A few things I learned -1. "Comic" is something intended to be funny; "comical" is funny whether intended or not.2. Stalemates don't end. A stalemate is the end, whereas a standoff or deadlock can end.3. "Meticulous" has a negative connotation of being excessively careful. "Scrupulous" or "painstaking" might be better choices.Not sure about when to use "who" versus "whom"? "Shall" versus "will"? "If I were ..." versus "If I was ..."? "Compare with" versus "compare to"? Bryson clears it all up.Another area he addresses is troublesome names of proper nouns. For example -1. "Notes from Underground", not "Notes from the Underground".2. Big Ben is the bell, not the clock.3. Leonardo is the preferred second reference for Leonardo da Vinci.4. "Finnegans Wake" has no apostrophe.5. National Institutes of Health - plural.His clarifications on spelling, though few in number, were amazingly well selected. These, for example, were news to me -1. Expressible2. "Hear, hear!", not "Here, here!"3. Just deserts (not desserts)4. UkuleleReading this book will help you write with greater precision and clarity. At 240 pages, it's surprisingly comprehensive and every bit as good as a desk side reference as The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law

Bill Bryson is an entertaining story teller, but I think he is at his best when he is explaining the history behind things (a la Short History of Nearly Everything, At Home or Mother Tongue).I am currently reading his Walk in the Woods and while it is amusing to read about his experiences, I actually enjoy it more when he goes off on a tangent and includes some background history by way of explanation. If you agree, then this book is for you.Granted, you will not find every word here that may confuse you. This may make it less useful as a reference book, since when one turns to a dictionary or thesaurus, you expect to always find the word you are looking for. This volume is by no means exhaustive, it contains only those words the author finds confusing or ones that he frequently sees misused. To call this a dictionary then, may be a bit of a stretch. At times I also wish he was less concise, but then I guess there are practical limits to how long a book like this can be.What it is, is highly informative and interesting, a hard feat for any writer to achieve. The explanations are clear and easy to understand - he writes for the layman. He educates in an entertaining way and is often quite amusing. This is Mr. Bryson's forte' and he does not disappoint. Look up one word and your eye will stray to another. Before you know it, you have finished the chapter and started on the next.Highly recommenced, just don't expect it to include every word in the English language.

An institution in the style of the French Academy is unthinkable for English. Indeed, herein lies the strength of English and the basis of its ability to continually re-invent itself and evolve through time. French, by way of comparison, looks increasingly like the fly stuck in amber.Bryson is a highly observant wordsmith and his book should be read by all those who cherish English and its marvelous journey.

A collection of interviews with comedians talking about comedy and life. What a fresh idea for a book!My favorite part was the suspense. Who will the next chapter feature? And as I turned the pages, sweet Jesus! Louis CK! Chris Rock! Steve Martin! Mind blownYet I found myself mezmorized at each chapter, despite my level of familiarity with a few of Apatow's subjects. In fact, I often enjoyed learning about the less familiar (to me) icons...prompting me to do some homework and fill some obvious gaps in my comedy history understanding.It's so introspective. In a few instances, I wanted it to be...well...funnier. But this book is very different, conceptually. More than beg for laughs, it looks at our shared journey and humanizes larger than life figures. Apatow is this omnipresent comedy mastermind who exploits his vast celebrity connections in all the right ways. We learn what makes people tick, whether it's Amy Schumer, Mel Brooks, or the collective WE.Buy it. Love it. And Judd, please five us Volume II.

I also worked at WKWZ about 5 years earlier than Judd (Class of '77). In a visit to my old High School 10 years ago, I had spoken Roy (guess Fred had left). I was wondering if Judd had brought all these comics to the High School for the interviews. Roy informed me that Judd had done most of interviews away from the station. However, very few were played at the station. So I was hoping I would find them in the book. Sadly, there were not as many high school interviews as I thought their would be. However, the interviews in the book were great and I enjoyed the book very much. I would recommend this to inspiring comic and/or comic writers. It gives a great insight of the business.

I was expecting this book to be funny. It's interviews with comedians, after all. You'd think it would be full of funny anecdotes about their lives as comedians. While I found the interviews interesting, I did not find them funny. It's more like business people discussing how they got into business and how they conduct business, only the business here is comedy. Even when they discuss a particular joke, it's not to *tell* the joke, but to discuss the motivation and the background that went into it. One thing that I found interesting is how much emotional pain and angst is behind comedy and comedians. Roseanne Barr's interview was particularly sad.

I kept thinking that the book was more of a type of therapy for the author, rather than about the people he interviewed. So much was more about him than his subjects. We get to learn who Judd Apatow is, I guess. Many of the same anecdotes and information about his life, roommates, and philosophy. He interrupted his interviewees more often than not, though I suppose that is part of the natural "dialogue". I did enjoy the talk with Steve Allen - I laughed out loud reading that chapter, remembering how original, off-the-cuff and hilarious Allen's show was. So, that was worth the price of admission!

Got this book "Sick in the Head: Conversations about Life" by Judd Apatow for my brother. He was raving about this book and its collections of Mr. Apatow's dialogue's with various modern day comedians. My brother especially enjoyed being able to "pop open" the book to any page and enjoy some quick contents.

Great collection of interviews with the most well known comedians in the U.S. As a young teen, Apatow wormed his way into the inner workings of a comedic mind. He would assure his contacts the interview was for radio, they were...and didn't mention it was a school radio program. All of those comics he contacted during his young years agreed to be interviewed. What I found so interesting was the maturity of Apatow's questions. As he matured and did stand-up comedy himself, the shared experiences of comedians is so engrossing. I recommend Sick in the Head, for a unique view of how comedy works and the work it takes to be funny.

A talented guy, talking with talented people. But, I was not as interested as I expected. Many of the conversations were too self referential (what did I expect?) . Still, if you are a fan of comedy, you'll want to read this

On the surface, it seems like a money grab by a successful producer/director, but what makes this book fascinating is that the interviews began well before he ever found success; and how many people have had the opportunity to interview their idols while still just a teenager?These are not all "straight" interviews; some are transcripts of broadcasts, or of panel discussions, but nevertheless they provide an insight into funny people that is otherwise hidden from the public.Not the greatest review, but I'd rather people read it for themselves, rather than just take my word for it.

Greg Fox is the artist/writer of the comic strip "Kyle's Bed & Breakfast", currently syndicated to a variety of LGBT publications across North America, Fox has published four collections of Kyle's B&B, the first of which was a Lambda Literary Award Finalist, and a collection of figure drawings, "Kyle's B&B Presents: Drawings of Drew" featuring Kyle's B&B character Drew Danvers. I enjoyed it. It is shorter than the other books in the series, but the artwork keeps getting better and it is is in color. I wish there was a bed & breakfast like this, because Kyle's cooking sounds yummy. You can count on this book to have a mostly feel-good storyline with a bunch of characters you end up caring about. I hope another compilation comes out soon.

Greg Fox offers us his 4th installment of the drama and adventure of Kyle's Bed and Breakfast. As always the art is wonderfully drawn and the story line keeps us wanting more from Fox. We should all have such a place to become a part.

I love this book!

Another compilation from Greg Fox, and well worth the wait. Every character and plot line to get reacquainted with along with a healthy dose of the male physique. Just perfect! Now if only Greg would create these strips faster.

Funny and the color is wonderful

This book is just incredible You become part of the lives of the people in it. I have all four volumes and I love them and the wonderful stories and characters. I actually think they're brilliant. I hope Greg Fox never stops writing these stories.
