This entire series is very well done, and this guide is no exception. I order it in groups of 10-15 copies and provide one to every traveler that signs up for my group Africa safaris. We are very limited on packing weight due to the small planes we fly on, so even my field guides never make the cut. This guide covers the most common birds we are likely to see, the lamination makes it very durable to use in the rain or toss in a backpack. I always leave mine behind for the guide or Land Cruiser driver to give to a school. and despite the suggestion they do the same, my travelers always take it back home to use in identifying the birds in their photos. Its not meant to substitute for a full sized field guide, and it doesn't. But on a game drive, you mostly want to ID what you see, you can learn the life history later. Great bang for the buck!

It's coated so it should withstand moisture. It's colorful. It shows a lot of birds. It will be handy to review at the end of a day of game drives or observing, when you know what a bird looks like but might not remember the name. The pictures are OK. Not great, not awful, just OK. If you've seen an actual Egyptian Goose you can look at this picture and say: "Yes, I can see the similarity". But if you didn't already know what to look for or what to call it you might not make the match. Same for Hammerkop or Maribou Stork, etc. I'll take it along on our next trip to Africa because it is lightweight and so easy to carry, and because it shows so many birds at the same time, grouped by the type of setting you're most likely to see them.

The first half of this book was fantastic. I was relating to everything the author wrote. She clearly expressed all of the conflicting feelings that an about to be empty nest mom feels. It was incredibly comforting to have someone express and validate what I am feeling. And then...out of the blue she begins a painfully long rant on a woman's relationship with her father sharing every detail of her own painful relationship with her father. I never quite got how this connected to a mom's feelings when her last child leaves home and it was there that she completely lost me. I did not share any of the authors feelings in that regard and did not have such a relationship with my father, and yet, here I was mourning the imminent departure of my son and struggling to figure out how I was going to carry on without him here beside me every day. Somehow she continues with this thread for what seems like an eternity and then launches into career advice for women who quit work when their children were born. Once again on and on about a topic best saved for a career self help book, which, having started back to work in a rewarding career when my kids were still at home, was of absolutely no use to me. In my opinion what the author has here are the beginnings of three very different books - one about life after the kids are gone, one about the lasting affects of a woman's early relationship with her father, and one about second half of life careers for former stay at home moms. They all had the potential to be helpful, engaging books, but together they are disjointed and do not necessarily appeal to the same reader.

Just what I need at this point in my life. Warm, insightful, and full of resources and ideas. My copy is now marked up with a lot of underlining, notes in the margin, and ideas written inside the covers. The empty nest is an enormous time of transition and this book is destined to become a classic in the field. Highly recommended.

I purchased this book as my oldest child was moving out of the house. I have had a hard time with her leaving as she has been my other half for 18 years and I felt like my identity. I needed help figuring out who I was without my best friend. I plan on reading it again next year when my youngest (my baby) leaves home. This is a good summer read and is comforting to know that you are not alone. I could relate to the stories even though our life was not the same the feelings were. I recommend this to any mom that is going through the struggle of finding herself as her children are leaving home.

I enjoyed this book by Melissa Shultz. Her witty and wise words are timely for most of us who are experiencing an empty nest. She includes checklists for monitoring our emotions as we make the transition from the constant chaos of children at home to the uncomfortable silence after they leave. Her stories of reinvention are motivating and encouraging. She nailed my feelings with her "Review of Nurturing." And, her wit is delightful: "As they say in Yiddish, I am verklempt."

I enjoyed this book very much. It's the perfect blend of humorous, honest relatable memoir and practical advice from both professionals as well as other notable women who have gone through similar experiences as children get older. Beautifully written. Highly recommend.

Good book and has some great excerpts to help me cope with being an empty nester.

The first 2/3 of this book was great. Gave me things to think about and ways to help my son as he's preparing to leave for college. It also provoked A LOT of tears. Having an only child - I've been able to figure me out through the years and I didn't need the suggestions for 'finding' me again that was discussed in the last part of the book. Well written, fast and easy to read.

Facing this issue very soon! I purchased this book for myself and I got one for a girlfriend in the same boat. I have really enjoyed reading this book, looking at the resources like blogs that she recommends, and just knowing that I'm not alone in my feelings! Glad I found this book and even recommended it to a complete stranger while attending my child's college orientation! Great and comforting resource.

Great book and price. Have long respected author Bob Vernon.

I read this book and loaned it to several friends. They all informed me that they couldn't put it down. Bob Vernon tells his story clearly and with conviction.

This booked was referred to me years ago a friend of the author. Lost my first copy. Glad to have it again.

This book is something more like two books, rather than one. Vernon spends the first half of the book telling his view of the department and what his career was like and how it ended during the aftermath of the LA Riots of 1992. If you are intersted in police work and in the LAPD in particular you will enjoy that part. If you are interested a police officer's view during the Los Angeles Riots of 1992 it also for you. Robert Vernon's father was a 20-year veteran of LAPD and he tells of his father's frustaration of working in the (then) terribly corrupt department. Vernon then writes of his rise up the ranks and chronicles the evolution of the department during his time there.The second part of the book deals with Vernon's observations on American society and the things that have contributed its changes, not all of them for the better. These personal observations seem to be the recollections of an older gentleman who wishes to impart some of his aquired knowledge to a younger generation that might have a chance to make some changes for the better.I met Mr. Vernon earlier this year at a Pointman Leadership Seminar that my employer sponsored. It was well worth my time and inspired me to read this book, which I had just aquired a month prior to the seminar. Having met the man prior to reading the book and getting a more insightful view of what makes him tick made the book more inspiring. I hope he might update the book and make it available to participants in his seminar as I believe he has grown a lot, spititually, since it was written and that aspect of his personality could better be presented in the book today.

The author, Bob Vernon, rose up through the ranks of the LAPD and through a 37 year career, became Deputy Chief. This book gives important behind-the-scenes insight into the events surrounding the Rodney King incident and the riots that followed. It also lays out how Los Angeles politicians in this time period sought to use the police force for their own political purposes. The second half of the book uses police stories to illustrate principles that the author believes need to be addressed in society today to re-instate law and order. I can't recommend this book highly enough for those with either an interest or who are working in law enforcement.

A book for the times we are in today! Deputy Chief Vernon was the first to see the video of the beating of Rodney King and it sickened him saying it set the race relationships the L.A.P.D. had built back 40 years! A quick and enlightening book from the inside heart of Law Enforcement!

Even if I hadn't had the pleasure of meeting the inimitable Alison Balter in person recently, I would still highly recommend this book for people new to using SQL Server. SQL Server 2005 Explress is one of the most compact, accessible and easily configured versions to date (though MS continues to expand their offerings), making it quite accessible for even a laptop user if need be.Alison does an excellent job of breaking down all the basic parts without pandering as other publishers can sometimes seem to do, efficiently guiding the user through the installation process, and beginning DB management techniques. MS Access users will be well acquainted with the Northwinds sample database included (in SQL Server version), maintaining a level of familiarity as you dip your toes in the new SQL Server Express 2005 waters.By breaking the whole subject into one hour "topics" per chapter, the whole concept of administering SQL Server is much more digestible, without pandering. You can literally spend an hour a day and get through the book in basically a month (24 days) with a solid foundation to launch from. The language is clear, not overly-technical, yet precise. You will add things like T-SQL, triggers and stored procedures to your vocabulary before you know it.A lot of SQL Server users are "accidental DBA's" as they inherit the job when a predecessor leaves and no one else is equipped or willing to take on the task. This is an excellent resource for both such unwitting DBA's, and aspiring MS Access developers seeking to upsize both their apps and their resumes. Highly recommend.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. It pontificates in a grandiose manner, assuming you'll be impressed by the big words even though they say nothing. If you are looking for a tutorial, this book does not walk you through the processes and sometimes even leads you astray without explaining or helping you through the errors. It doesn't even tell you when you're working in a different database or where to go to get that database so you can continue to follow along. It's not even useful as a reference book. It will tell you a command and if the command requires a code, it just says you need a code. When we did an internet search to find out more about the code, it was explained in one line. Would it have made the book too long to add one more sentence? As someone new to SQL, I found this book to be a complete waste of money and time.I agree with all the poor ratings listed here - I had not read them before because I bought the book as part of a group at work where we would all be learning together. We are all programmers in other disciplines and most dropped out of the class because this book is so bad. It's funny how some of the good ratings here have to explain how you get around the problems so you can learn from the book - DOES THAT TELL YOU SOMETHING???

I brought this book because my work wanted me to learn more about SQL server. The book started off quite well i thought for the first 3 hours but then about the 4th hour there where no examples. I would of thought they could of thrown a few exmaple databases on the CD to go along with.Unfortunately for me i am a hands-on person when it comes to learning, i have to walk along with a tutorial of some sort to understand what im doing rather than just reading about something. They give all the screenshots in the book but really I needed a real working database to work with.In the section on 'Adding and Modifying Indexes', it's almost like the author was teaching a different level. At one point it says select clustered to designate the index as clustered, but then doesn't even explain what a clustered index is.The other thing i noticed was that if you search in google under, 'Adding and Modifying Indexes', it pulls up a link to Alison Balter's Mastering Access 2002 Enterprise Development. The text for this section is identical to the section for this book. So it was not even re-written text, it was the same text copied from one of her previous books.Hopefully someone on here will recommend something a bit more suited for the beginner.

I agree with the previous reviewer who said that this book does not reflect typical SAMS quality. I'm reading Ben Forta's "MySQL Crash Course" (also by SAMS) at the same time, and the difference is night and day. The first 100 pages of this "Teach Yourself" book do not even employ any actual databases... it's all just dry abstract instruction: "If you want to do this... then do this... if you want to do this... then do this..." Besides being unreadable from sheer bone dryness, without any examples it's almost impossible to figure out why or when you'd want to do any of these things. These first 100 pages literally read like they were copied out of Microsoft's online-help. In Chapter 6 the author first introduces a sample database (Northwind), so I'm hoping things will improve somewhat, but I'm not too optimistic with this one.

Sweet & simple telling of the creation of the earth from Genesis. Easy to understand for younger children. The are is beautiful in traditional Nancy Tillman style. I love that an image of God or His hand is hidden in every page. My kids had fun searching for the picture.

I love Nancy Tillman books and this one is no exception. Beautifully written and illustrated story of the beginning of life. We gave this to our children on Easter and enjoyed reading it to them all that morning.

Nice book, great letters from the authors but it wasn't long enough, nor did it give enough detail about the creation story. I realize it is a children's book but I just think you can and should have more substance, especially for something as beautiful as the story of creation, children can hang in for a longer story and I just think there was too much left out...I was left thinking that I couldn't believe that it had ended when there was so much left to tell...but what is there, is very well done.

This is the sweetest book. And it is beautifully decorated. It should be a classic that's on the shelf of every child. I bought it to read to my 6 yr old but it could be read to a much younger child and I don't think you could get too old for it

I read to my baby girl every day for hours during her colicky crying sessions. This book is one of my favorites. I love the creation story, but what really makes this book amazing is the beautiful illustrations.

I pre-ordered this book hoping it wouldn't turn out to be some strange version of the Biblical story of creation. It's sweet and lyrical but not to the extent of becoming cloying, at least to me. The illustrations are, as always with Nancy Tillman, a joy. The book basically follows the sequence of the creation story from Genesis.

I love all of Nancy Tillman's books, and I am a huge supporter of Desmond Tutu, so this book had been on my wishlist since it first went public. I was not disappointed. Some people were upset that the words are not directly from the Bible, however, then it would not be the words of Desmond Tutu. This is a book that he wrote to explain creation, and it is beautiful!

We LOVE Nancy Tillman books. Purchased this for a baby shower gift and the family loves it! Beautiful illustrations, great story!
