I needed to “cleanse my palate” after binge reading a fantasy series. I decided to step as far from fantasy as possible, so I ventured into the far more complex realm of…Fact.Astrophysics, to be precise. What’d I learn?I learned the universe is much bigger than I can comprehend, and we puny humans are much less significant to the universe than we imagine.I learned I’m glad there are people who are good at Astrophysics, because I’m notMostly, I learned that Astrophysics is really (Really, REALLY) complicated. Even having Neil deGrasse Tyson spell it out for me couldn’t get topics like quantum mechanics, prolate spheroids, dark matter, or E=MC2 to be more than curiosities beyond my reach.Getting through the book was worth it just to get to the last chapter, where Neil deGrasse Tyson brings the “our universe is so big and we are so insignificant” talk to a climax with some great comparisons. For example…Did you know there are more molecules in a cup of water than there are cups of water on Earth?Of course you didn’t. Because you’re not an Astrophysicist.Instead of feeling small, however, I was left feeling part of something very, very grand. Some call it science. Some call it God. I call it both.Interested in Astrophysics but clueless about Astrophysics? This is the book for you. You’ll still be clueless, but you’ll feel okay being clueless once you get a sense for the overwhelming complexity involved in with the physics of the universe. It’s a big place.Happy Reading.

First off, I love Neil deGrasse Tyson. He's one of my idols and I aspire to be where he is. My issue with this book is that I read it directly after reading his book "Death by Black Hole"...and A LOT of the content from that book is inserted into this one...word for word. It was disappointing to say the least. I pre-ordered this book two months ago and was excited when it came. I actually do really like the size of it, but the content troubles me.I will always read his books but I don't like that there is very little original content in this one. If you already own Death by Black Hole and Origins, save your money. You already have this entire book. \3 stars because it is informative IF you've never read any of his other books.

This book is exactly what its title purports -- lessons on astrophysics for people in a hurry. Each chapter is a bite-sized look at various topics, ranging from the big bang, the discovery of invisible light, the space between the planets, all the way to the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. While astrophysics is a challenging field of study, Neil deGrasse Tyson delivers his essays in clearly written prose, with relatable examples used to highlight the most difficult concepts. The chapters on dark matter and dark energy are two of my favorites, piquing my interest to search for additional writing on these subjects. One of the best and most thought provoking chapters comes at the end: Reflections on the Cosmic Perspective. If we could all view our lives through the lens of the cosmos, we might come to the same realization the author does. "We do not simply live in this universe. The universe lives within us."

In this book you can tell that Dr. Neil Tyson put his heart and intellect into this book. I've learned more reading this book than I have in all of my science classes throughout the years altogether. I'm so happy that I purchased this book and the narration(narrated by Dr. Tyson)on my Kindle Fire because the narration just adds so much more. This book gives you the facts that are the most interesting, informative, and important, this book doesn't "dumb-down" any of the topics mentioned either. Neil Degrasse Tyson is my role model because I myself want to be an astrophysicist, or aerospace engineer, and reading this book just inspired me even more to go to college and major in one of the two when I get out of High School. I mean who isn't interested in the big questions of the universe? Please buy this book if you're at all interested in the universe and want to support Dr. Tyson too. Sorry for any grammatical mistakes I may have overlooked, this is my first written review.- Aiden A.

I have read Origins, Death By Back Hole, and Space Chronicles before this one. I feel like I have read this book before. It reads like an updated Origins. Good material, but a waste of money for me.

I was introduced to Neil DeGrasse Tyson with the video series “Cosmos” on Netflix. (They recently removed the series from Netflix - very disappointing.) I listened to him speak on some radio programs and other interviews and eventually caught wind of this book. I’m fascinated with the subject matter (I imagine everyone would be - it’s about our history, present and future). This book is easy to read, informative, and leaves me feeling more aware without being overwhelmed with information that’s beyond my knowledge base. Plus, I’m so busy that I am notorious for starting books but never really getting through them. I read this weekend morning and a few evenings. Very light and yet rich. Extremely pleased.NOTE: I was NOT paid for this review. These reviews are too often polluted with fake, paid reviews. I want to be clear that my review is NOT paid for. My review is REAL.

I was hoping that this would be a good addition to my library, but I was quite disappointed. I understand that it's meant to be a short overview, but it feels a touch too short and almost unfinished. In comparison to books by Carl Sagan, all of which I've read, this pales in comparison. Neil is not nearly as likeable, his ego shines through in a number of passages. This feels less like a chat with a friendly, intelligent friend and more like a monologue by a college professor that loves himself too much.

Loved this book. Coming from someone who started running at 56 .. I appreciated its honesty and humor! Never quit trying!

This has been so helpful in getting going in running. I'm over 60 and this has helped keep me motivated and prevented many pitfalls, like vaseline on your feet and sports bra areas of rubbing before a longer run. Thank you, Alexandra!

This book has made me laugh until I could hardly breathe and cry just as hard. I have always been the least athletic person in my family. I was the one with the best grades and the nerd, so I found excuses not to even try physically in PE at school. I told myself it just wasn't my "thing," even though I secretly envied those who were athletic and fit. I started a 5k training program a couple weeks ago, and heard myself saying inwardly, "You can't do this. You aren't physically strong enough." Being a cancer survivor and having a rare lung disease would be easy excuses for me, but they taught me that I am stronger than I thought- and now I want to be a runner. Just for me. I want to prove to myself that I can use my body to move me forward, not just be a victim and suffer its illnesses and pains. This book has given me such courage through the first two weeks of training, and I know I will reread it over and over.

I really enjoyed this book. I don't often read nonfiction except for travel writing, so that's saying something. :) I recently started jogging and I am not size 2 like most runners I see near me. It was funny to hear her thoughts on bras etc as I have the same issues. I thought this book looked fun and it really was. It's inspirational, has a few good tips, and was definitely worth reading. It left me wanting to keep going. So, if you are just curious, or a beginner runner, I'd definitely suggest it. :) It's more about her story than teaching you how to run, in case you did not realize that. Happy reading!

I like that it’s not another book on running your way to a model’s body. I like the practicality and honesty of the advice. I like the light humour and humanity of the endeavour. It is to me the the Don Quixote of running books, with a happier conclusion. I feel inspired to start running. Probably

Wonderful book! I especially loved the audio version to run to, which offered tons of smiles and motivation.

Loved the book! Is inspirational and practical!

I enjoyed the book. I felt like she described many of the experiences I have had in this journey and it was morivating. The last section of the book was more related to the injuries that happen when running which I skimmed and hopefully won't have to thoroughly read through. I enjoyed the voice of the book.

A word for word translation of the material found within the Egyptian pyramids. interesting as it may be, we do need to realize that most of it is pertaining to a lie. Ra (Marduk) claimed to be the only god of man and he promised eternal life to his half human mortal offspring. He created a religion and gave them false hope of eternal life if they followed his orders. How do we know that it was a lie. Well the bodies never went anywhere and the riches meant to pay (bribe) for the human mortals passage to heaven was also all still there. The only people who were paid were the tomb thieves. There is no evidence to show that Ra (nor any other entity) have control of the human souls after death either.

It bridges the gap between science and the Bible plus all of the 12 God religions as well as all the eastern & Western ancient civilizations and the origin of man, his weaknesses, strengths, evolution gaps. It even explains how it fits in with Native American ancestry from the sky as well as the reason God" struck down the Tower of Babel (Babylon) and why and how it hobbled humanity. It strongly hypothesizes why we were created + why records of it were buried in the Sumerian ruins, It surmises that beings from the sky existed and were called angels goblins giants and so forth, The book appears to be evidence based with photos of hieroglyphics, races of hybrid humans, And evidence hard core evidence of an advanced intelligence that was on Earth in our past, It explains Noahs flood but its still a work in progress, We are finding evidence everyday.

The second part of The Earth Chronicles is the continuing story of the ancient history of planet Earth and how humans came to be here.Zecharia Sitchin is an accomplished linguist and researcher. His academic conclusions are brilliant and his work is interesting andthought provoking. I would like to see his theory presented in secondary schools. I would recommend this read to anyone who seeks.

Stairway to Heaven (S2H) is a continuation of the 12th Planet series of books. It is recommended that you read the 12th Planet by Zecharia Sitchin before starting this book. That book startswith Sumer and its writings and legacy. All of the mythology that we have down to modern time seems to be a repeatof the Sumerian stories (with the names changed). In S2H, Sitchin continues with the ancient visitation theory - the purpose to mine and export gold, silver, copperetc back to the 12th planet. The S2H is the explanation of the transportation and communications systems thathelped move the raw materials to the various spaceports (before and after the Deluge - lets call that 10,000BC - around the end of the last ice age). How do the Giza pyramids, Jerusalem, Mt Ararat, the Sinai peninsula and Ba-albek together? The authorshows one interpretation.Sitchin's work traces through the older version of the Bible, Sumerian, Akkadian, and Egyptian stories topiece together an interesting story of his version of history. He also goes through how our history ofwitnessing the gods of old (human visitors with space ships) shaped our view of life, the afterlifeand immortality.

I really enjoyed learning about the ruins of Baalbek, a topic I previously knew nothing about. I also enjoyed learning about how the discoveries of the early archaeologists in Egypt. Their findings ranged from accurate to misunderstood to intentionally deceptive for the sake of their own egos, yet regardless of accuracy have shaped the modern perspective on Egyptology. You can really sense the passion and excitement of discovery in Sitchin's writing. To fully enjoy this book you must share at least some of that passion as well. At times I found it to be a bit long winded as he kept adding fact after fact leading up to proving his points and explaining his theories. But once he finally gets to those points, its usually something pretty cool. I definitely had more fun reading the first book in this series, but I did thoroughly enjoy this one as well. I will continue to read the books in this series.

Start with his first book, 'The Twelfth Planet'. If you are new to ancient history, do not get hung up on the names. There is plenty of repetition so that by the end of the book you will know who is whom.

This book primarily covers man's quest to achieve immortality from the "gods". Sitchin, as in Book I, compares and contrasts archaeological findings, the Bible, writings of historians throughout the ages and mythology to formulate his conclusions. It is hard to believe as coincidence that every civilization in every age had the identical tale to the Sumerican king, Gilgamesh. And where did Gilgamesh's journey take him to speak to the "gods"? The evidence seems to point to a spaceport where the "gods" travelled from earth to the heavens. The arguments are more than convincing, and the drawings, geometric measurements and descriptions of these places - Giza, Heliopolis, Mt. Ararat - are hard to ignore. The history of Earth in our currently accepted paradigm is very problematic and not really credible. Sitchin certainly got my attention with the Earth Chronicle series.

The book is incredibly interesting, giving perspective and alternate theory on historical facts that haven't been and may never been proven. Good stuff.

"The Punch" was an excellent book. A little repetitious, as other reviewers have indicated, but otherwise the author took a difficult topic and did a fine job. A few points on the content. There is disagreement as to who threw the first punch- Kunnert or Washington. Kermit and Kareem say that Kunnert threw the first punch. Kunnert and referees Bob Rakel and Ed Middleton say that Kermit threw the first punch. Regardless of who threw the first punch, Washington was completely at fault for viciously attacking Tomjanovich, who was trying to break up the fight. If Washington was concerned about his safety, he should have put his hands up or moved elsewhere on the floor. Washington had a history of NBA fights, at least three of which caused his ejection . This includes one fight in practice in which he beat up one of his own teammates. In my opinion, Washington had a chip on his shoulder, and this chip was exacerbated after the fight and seemed to have a racial aspect. According to Washington, his lengthy suspension, loss in the civil suit filed against him and the Lakers, and his inability to find steady, long-term work were due to the fight and to racism on the part of the NBA, the public and the world in general. In 1995 he applied for the job of Athletic Director at American University. He was not chosen because he had no front office experience, but AU said he could come in as an Assistant AD and gain experience. Apparently this wasn’t good enough for Washington. He said he should be made the AD because of his name, and the experienced person should be under him as the Assistant AD. He had a lawyer send a letter to the NBA asking for $5 million dollars because he felt there was a conspiracy to besmirch his name. The NBA paid him nothing. earlier, when his agent was trying to get the best possible outcome on his suspension, Washington almost loused up his chances by talking about watermelon and fried chicken. He did many good things, his friends spoke well of him, and he had a difficult childhood, but he seemed to be a volcano waiting to erupt.

This book was recommended to me by a coworker who thought the lessons of the life-long impact of an incident, and how they dealt with it, on two different people would be applicable to some of my own life events. The recommendation was a solid one, and I appreciated learning about (I can't say more because I never knew about "the punch" until I read the book) "the punch" and how Tomjanovich and Washington dealt with not only the physical aftermath of the incident, but also the emotional and mental aftermath. The lesson is easy, if not predictable, but having it play out as you read it and realizing two men really experienced this helps to make the lesson more applicable.I was less impressed with the writing, which I felt needed a good editor. Major stories were repeated and quotes were often reused.

Feinstein is a fine writer but you wouldn't know it from this. This really should have been a retrospective article in Sports Illustrated, not a full-sized book. I often thought there were printing errors in my copy because I was reading similar passages over and over. But no, I suppose Feinstein needed to get a decent sized book so he did what he had to do.But at least I have a better overall view of Kermit Washington. He's a really great guy in many ways, very charitable and caring. The problem is he's handled just about everything relating to "the punch" poorly. He blames another player, tells Rudy how much he's suffered in a rare meeting, sues the NBA, etc. etc. I think it was John Lucas who advised him to take responsibility and move on, not say "I'm sorry, but...". Unfortunately, Washington hasn't taken this advice. I hope someday he does, because there's no winning when you look for excuses and scapegoats in something horrific you've done.

A BUNCH of info about professional basketball back in the '70's. I HIGHLY recommend

John Feinstein has again transported us to another world. He is the master at helping lead the reader somewhere he is not likely to go on his own. Feinstein is a master storyteller. This story of the effect one moment on the lives of two men is both fascinating and compelling.

Good book and very interesting reading. Some parts a little repetitive but overall a good book.

Now, I finally know the when, what, who, how and why of this story. All sports fan should read this book.

An interesting story that I knew nothing about before I read the book. It's amazing to me how one 5-second incident can affect lives forever. But I think the lesson of the book is that you don't HAVE to let it affect you forever. It is, of course, just the author's take based on his interviews, but it is sad that it seems Kermit Washington has never been able to move on from something that happened in 1977. Bitterness is a nasty poison.

Review

“The personal and generational damage Patton lays bare indicts a fearful culture of violence and implicates not only conceptions of good parenting among African Americans, but among Americans at large. This is a must-read for all concerned about the welfare of children, about America’s future, and about the U.S. Constitution’s pledge of ‘We the People’ to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.”—Library Journal“Spare the Kids is a necessary book. Drawing from history, popular culture, and cutting edge research, Stacey Patton makes a careful and persuasive argument against the practice of hitting children. Without condescension or unnecessary moralizing, this book will challenge your most deeply held assumptions and refute your strongest arguments. More importantly, it challenges us to develop a healthier and more humane approach to raising and loving our children.”—Marc Lamont Hill, author of Nobody: Casualties of America’s War on the Vulnerable, from Ferguson to Flint and Beyond“The impact on child-rearing among so many black families of Stacey Patton’s Spare the Kids may well prove as powerfully corrective as Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin was upon the acceptance of chattel slavery.”—David Levering Lewis, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for biographies on W. E. B. Du Bois“Patton brilliantly demonstrates the ways that corporal punishment is indelibly linked to white supremacy, and a continuation of the systemic logic that undergirds it. In that sense, her work is less moralizing—something we already have more than enough of—than a structural analysis of systemic injustice and how that injustice has been transmitted directly, and often brutally, onto the bodies of children.”—Tim Wise, author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son“Patton’s book is the most forceful case against corporal punishment ever made. Rooted in a deep understanding of the historical devaluation of black life, informed by the best science on trauma and violence exposure as predictors of future violence, and written in a fierce, urgent tone, if you turn these pages, you will stop beating your child. Ending the legacy of the master’s lash in our schools and rejecting the preacher’s admonition against sparing the rod in our homes may be the surest way for parents to show black children that their lives matter.”—Khalil Muhammad, author of The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern America and professor at Harvard Kennedy School“Spare the Kids is a heartbreaking—and important—book that addresses the nightmarish reality that Black parents devoted to bringing up their children with love and respect may engage in punishment that hurts their families and reinforces ideas of white superiority and Black inferiority. Skillfully weaving together history, the experiences of Black families, the reports of researchers and the work of child advocates, Stacey Patton is leading a call for change that will transform childrearing forever.”—Jorja Leap, author of Project Fatherhood: A Story of Courage and Healing in One of America’s Toughest Communities“As a writer who had my daughter in my middle thirties and my son in my forties, I had thought a lot about how I wanted to raise them. I decided before they were born that I would not spank them. Stacey Patton’s Spare the Kids confirmed my instinct that it couldn’t be a way to build the kind of loving, trusting relationship I wanted to have with my kids. Being a parent is hard, no doubt. We make decisions all day, every day, small ones and big that impact our children’s daily lives and ones that have long-range consequences. Patton’s book reminds us that by respecting black children, their thoughts, their gifts, and their humanity, we show them that we love them.”—Benilde Little, national best-selling author of Good Hair, The Itch, and Welcome to My Breakdown“Stacey Patton’s raw, searing and often disturbing examination peels back the layers of corporal punishment and exposes the deep and institutionalized wounds of our past, as well as the evidentiary tales of the present.”—Kuae Kelch Mattox, National President, Mocha Moms, Inc.

Dr Patton's book is courageous and the message long overdue and she brings the protection of black children to the front and center from corporal punishment in families and school. She in detail discusses the literal mountain of research from the past 30 years that has powerfully shown over and over and over again the danger of physical punishment to children. She mentions how in 1977 the Supreme Court defended the brutal beating of a school student held down by a number of educators. The child had huge bruises and welts and could not move for weeks. They basically said that it was not cruel and unusual punishment although they were aware that nobody (all adults are protected from physical beating by anyone) only children may be beaten by law. These horrors have largely been denied or ignored by not only the public but to the US Congress who over the past few years has rejected several bills to stop legalized child abuse (usually paddling) in our schools in the 19 states where paddling is legal. There are too many injuries some serious which for the most part our courts have looked the other way. This occurs disproportionately with the most vulnerable children such as disabled or autistic children. Minorities, especially black males, are also disproportionately paddled/beaten in school. She recommends advocating to protect black children from this Civil Rights violation. Currently HR Bill 160, a new bill, is being ignored or rejected by Congress. She discusses the history of corporal punishment of black children including some roots in slavery where beating and brutalizing was so common by slave owners. She mentions the fear of unjust punitive authority by usually white authority figures factors into the rationale of parents physically punishing black children to keep them in line from awakening the horrifying punishing reaction by those in power. She cited countless experts and studies to affirm her position. She is a champion for the vulnerable and should be heard by all including parents who may not agree but desperately need this guidance and knowledge. I have seen up close what Dr Patton is bravely advocating. I have 32 years as a child protection administrator and therapist and have also written on the issue . Dr Patton's book recharges my batteries in the uphill battle to protect children from physical punishment

Slavery change our names, religions, eating habits, sexuality, politics, education,etc.,---in essence that diabolical system transformed us as human beings. It is no doubt that violence can change human beings, for violence and the threat of violence is the very foundation that The System of White Supremacy is built on. No doubt slavery impacted the way Black People parent. Mimicking the tactics of White Supremacists in raising child is not the way Black People should go, for as this book so clearly points out, we will create seriously damaged human beings, i.e. violent, low self esteem, sexually deviant, self destructive, anti intellectual, etc. So many Blacks believe abusing children is the best and only way to discipline children simply because The System of White Supremacy taught them that. They can never conceive that their child was given to them by an incredible divine and cosmic force to solve the Black People's greatest problem in the known Universe....White Supremacy! The very children that we abuse are the ones who just might carry the solution to our problem and may be the reason that the problem has not been solved to date! It is Black People's cosmic duty to stop hurting our children! This book is a great contribution to spreading that message.

SPARE THE KIDS takes an incisive look at the bullying dynamics prevalent in black communities, and the role parents play in perpetuating or resisting them. This difficult and hopeful book reveals the dark patterns that persist in many black families that cause the very problems they believe they are trying to prevent. America's bullying epidemic won't diminish until parents of all races—especially black and white—take responsibility for the cycle of pain we have all been woven into, and become skilled at building positive emotions in ourselves and our children. The post-slavery cycle of pain and trauma that pervades black communities affects all Americans. SPARE THE KIDS provides the key insights and research that will help get us unstuck, moving not just our conversation but our parenting practice beyond this pattern. Patton provides an air-tight understanding of the cultural and political forces that perpetuate cruelty to black children, and invites all readers to seek perspective. The final chapter, "Sparing the Rod," shares stories of parents who have opened their eyes to new paths, showing that all parents have the power to learn positive parenting skills. My heart leapt when I came across SPARE THE KIDS; this information was not available to us when we wrote THE BULLYING ANTIDOTE, and we highly recommend it to our readers.

Dr. Patton has presented an extremely well-documented view of the role of harsh parenting practices in the black community. Her contention is that harsh parenting, in the name of God and keeping their children safe from white violence, will keep African Americans down for generations to come. Harsh parenting contributes to a lack of self-regulation, pleasure seeking and hyper-vigilance, as well as life-long health problems, outcomes predicted based on the 1998 research by the CDC on the effects of adverse childhood experience (ACEs). This is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand why the black community has difficulty moving forward and as an assessment of parenting practices for all.

I would say I am a advanced beginner Tableau user. I bought this book in hopes it was written like others in the dummies series, that being it was a how to and why. This book gives very little how to and why. If you are really wanting to learn Tableau regardless of your current level this book is not for you. It has to be really bad for me to give a negative review. This book makes way too many assumptions. You would get more help at no charge then go to tableau website for free training, etc.

I ignored the negative reviews when ordering because I've utilized many of the Dummy books with success. Yikes this is not a good book. It skips a lot. Joins for example - I had to Google how to do joins because the book breezed over without describing. I wish I could return it

It is very disorganized. For instance, the definitions of the menu items start on page 100! Often explanations are so generalized (with terms that have not been defined yet) that they are virtually meaningless. Sometimes graph images change jump around during the example without explanation.I did learn some things, but I found that just following what the author did to make his charts, was more helpful than actually reading the book.

This is a very high level book that briefly touches on the basics of Tableau like connecting to data sources and creating visualizations, dashboards, and stories. it includes a section on calculations, but it's barely more than "you can do calculations". It provides detailed instructions on the clicks required to do things, but doesn't always provide examples and does not provide exercises to test and expand your knowledge. It also does not delve into the power of using Tableau connected to a database. Still, for a quick overview, it's very useful.

The For Dummies books can be hit or miss: sometimes you get a really useful and insightful introduction to a subject, sometimes you get a book that just gives you the really basic stuff. This book is of the second kind. You get to see how the software works, but you get no insights into how to start improving your visualizations or anything of the kind. For it's price you are better off with the free videos in the website, this is just a glorified user's manual.

I've read a lot of "For Dummies" books over the years, this is hands down the most poorly written and edited one I've encountered. Most Dummies books are very easy to follow step-by-step, this one says "use the blah-blah button to change x" without giving you a clue where the blah-blah button is. Look elsewhere for a Tableau guide.

Takes you throughout tables and explains thoroughly.

Much more understandable than the textbook for the class (which was like an operating manual)....good examples and it helped our group finish three class projects.
