As someone who saw these dogs in action at the World Trade Center, I can tell you that this book captures the undaunting spirit and tenacity of both the dogs, and their handlers. This will be a very enjoyable read for any dog lover. Sometimes, rescues, and rejects, just need the right place to shine.

What a beautiful book on rescue animals having their lives turned around when they were in need! Being trained to help humans in dire situations or devastating crises circumstances is amazing and gratifying. It also tells of the sadder side of stories where death is involved but resolution is solved by finding the bodies in huge numbered tragedies!

Author fought bureaucracy to accomplish her goal of training and providing cream of the crop search and rescue dogs for disaster situations. Very heartwarming.

This was a well written book and a very good read.

Outstanding true story of real dogs and people./ Jim

Wonderful, inspiring book for any dog lover!

Great book. I love true stories about real American heros. Thank you, to the trainers, handlers and of course the dogs.

Hero Dogs was hard to put down. I’m a dog lover and trainer and reading the story of these rescued and rejected dogs that turned into disaster search partners was enlightening, exciting, and heart wrenching. Some of these dogs had such a rough start to their lives. It was wonderful reading how their training evolved along with partnering and learning how to be a search and rescue team. The story is told from Wilma’s perspective and gives us the beginning of her partnership with her own dog, Murphy and the frustration she felt from other SAR handlers and SAR organizations. After working the Oklahoma City bombing, she ultimately vows to train 168 dog and handler teams for each victim. She decides to use rescue dogs for her program. The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, SDF, was then created.I loved the stories of the different dogs and their individual personalities and quirks. The pairing of the dogs with their human partners was unique and very appropriate. Wilma doesn’t sugar coat the trials of training these dogs and handlers. She also doesn’t let us think that every dog was perfect for disaster search. Some didn’t make the cut, but ended up in a working environment that fit their specific skills. A promise she made at the beginning was that none of these dogs would ever see a shelter again even if they couldn’t become a part of the program. Along the way, she meets and becomes friends with many people that she freely acknowledges as being a part of the whole and not just one person’s goal. It took many people and dogs to get the SDF where it is today. The search and rescue community is definitely better for having her work so hard to have her dream become a reality. Disaster victims couldn’t want a better team on their side than the SDF dog and handler teams. It was hard to put this book down. It flowed very easily from page to page. If you know nothing, or very little about search and rescue this book will be interesting. If you have knowledge of SAR, you’ll enjoy reading about the dogs, training and handlers. I enjoyed reading this and would highly recommend it. I received a free e-copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Multithreading Applications in Win32: The Complete Guide to Threads

Amazon.com Review

Multithreading--dividing an application into multiple independent streams of execution--is a powerful but potentially intimidating programming technique. Multithreading Applications in Win32: The Complete Guide to Threads teaches you how to build multithreaded applications step by step, starting with simple examples and gradually introducing complicating factors and the Win32 APIs you'll need to deal with them. After you've mastered the basic concepts, you'll learn exactly how to implement multithreading applications using C, C++, and MFC, plus specific applications of multithreading on the Win32 platform. The entire book maintains a conversational tone that helps make potentially complex topics understandable.

From the Back Cover

Using multiple threads, you can create high-performance servers, build extensions for Internet servers, take advantage of multiprocessor systems, build sophisticated objects in OLE and COM, and improve application responsiveness. Writing such software requires more than theory and a reference manual; it requires a comprehensive understanding of how everything fits together and a guide to what works and what doesn't. Multithreading is supported under Windows NT and Windows 95 and later through the Win32 API, but coverage of this important topic has been sporadic and incomplete until now. In Multithreading Applications in Win32, with just enough theory and lots of sample code, Jim Beveridge and Bob Wiener show developers when, where, and how to use multithreading. Included in the book are: Internet development examples, including ISAPI and WinSock. Hands-on coverage of how to use threads and overlapped I/O for server development. How to use the C run-time library and MFC in a multithreaded environment. Examples in C and C++. Comparisons to UNIX for developers transitioning from UNIX to Win32. The associated web site includes the code and sample applications from the book, including code that works with Internet WinSock. 0201442345B04062001

Excellent reference on writing, debugging, and maintaining multithreaded code in Windows. In my day job, I have to maintain and extend a heavily multithreaded service used with a fingerprint sensor. The original authors didn't quite have a handle on C++ or multithreading, and we've had a number of difficult bugs to track down and fix. This book, despite its age, is an excellent reference on multithreading in Windows, and I agree with some other reviewers that it should be mandatory reading for anyone working on multithreaded code. For those like me who got a copy of this book without the CD, here's how to get it, courtesy of the author:You can get the source code as follows:- Go to [...]- Click on the Downloads tab- Click on the words "CD Contents"

All information is clear, well organized and is a good book to program in a non-preemptive OS like Windows. I recommend

Excellent product and service!

I bought this book in 2005. This is a good book for beginners. I would expect more advanced topics and more complex multithreading techniques.

Looks good. Haven't referred to it yet

A beginners guide to multi-threading on WIN32. Experienced developers might find it useful to quickly skim through this book to see if there is anything that they didn't already know, but for the most part anyone with significant experience should find a different book. The language used in the book is very easy to read, making life easy for newcomers to threading, but possibly woolly enough to be slightly dangerous too, in that some stuff could bits could be misinterpreted. Developing example code using incorrect practices and then slowly fixing the problems is informative, but possibly not the best way of doing things. Why not just go for the right way first and then point out the errors that could have been made? That way it is safe for people to dip into the book and use code as is, rather than having to trawl through for a correct version. Talking about using code from books - do the authors expect the reader to trust their code when they include comments like "This happens occasionally instead of end-of-file. Not sure why" ? Certainly, that means that I would code-review anything I lifted from this book very carefully. More likely, it means that I won't lift anything from this book and will use Jeffrey Richter or Richard Gerber/Andrew Binstock instead. The book does cover a large range of Windows-related multi-threading topics - from file handling, GUI handling etc through implications for DLLs. It touches on Sockets but only very briefly, which was disappointing. Also particularly disappointing were the chapters on debugging and inter-process communications. There are too many books around that say that testing/debugging multi-threaded code is difficult without coming up with good strategies for overcoming the difficulties. Unit testing, logging and the debugger are useful, but obvious. "you must start making predictions (otherwise known as guesses)" (p268) is certainly an approach, but perhaps the time has come to use an engineering approach? The material could do with updating, as Windows, C++ and development techniques have all moved on since this book was published. Experienced developers should look forward to Jeffrey Richter's new book, planned for end of 2007, which should be as up to date as it comes.Despite referring to the CD-ROM the book didn't actually come with one. Instead the source had to be downloaded from the Addison Wesley web-site. Strangely, Addison Wesley do not have an errata for this book on their web-site. Normally I'm a big Addison Wesley fan, but they have done a few silly things with this book. The very first page of the preface had me concerned, when they hyphenated _beginthread to be _begin-thread. Given that this book is aimed at beginners I would be pretty sure that someone, somewhere tried typing that into their computer complete with the hyphen.

It does a very good job at describing the Win32 API for multithreading but the applications of multithreading assumed is strictly I/O related (Networking,printing,writing/reading files). The set of techniques for parallel processing on the same data is completely absent such as data organization in memory to optimize its parallel access. This is probably due to the age of the book as when it has been written, single core processor system was the norm. Parallel processing will become very important with the growing popularity of the multi core systems. Despite this weakness, this book is still my best recommendation for learning multithreaded programming on Windows since, to my knowledge, there is not yet any book tackling the subject of parallel processing on a Windows/x86 platform.

It is a good book on Windows multithreading. Synchronization, overlapped files, C++ multithreading, and MFC multithreading are clearly explained. You will find this book very good for you if you are a beginner in multithreading. However, it is clear that you should buy other book like Butenhof's book. You need other book because the reviewed one has funny things in it when it explains about the real application of multithreading programs. Can you imagine a multithreading book discourage its readers to write a multithreading application ? For example, he explained that it was difficult to write a multithreading book because maybe the existing library you have bought from other vendors might not be thread-safe..., so what you should do? This book does not give the answer

What a fantastic product. It enables you to sew a perfect scant 1/2"on any and all machines. The tapes are reusableso can be moved whenever you want to.All you need to do is align the tapeon your machine and away you go.It's even easier if you use a corner cut toolthat makes sure it's aligned straight. The tape makes it so easy to followand you feel confident you are sewingin a straight line.In each pack you get 5 strips. We've also been using them as stripson my sons work so that he can findit easier to align his work.I really like this product. It's so easy to use and makes sucha difference when you are sewing.I received this item/product in return for my honest review.

Sewing Edge is GREAT! It is NOT the same as tape (for anyone who says it is)... Because it has an EDGE. That is why it's called "Sewing Edge" I am guessing. It is raised, unlike flat tape, so you can guide your fabric along it and have it aid you in getting those 1/4" seam allowances just right. I love mine. Yes, it covers the drop in bobbin case... but they are removable. You are supposed to remove them when you're done sewing and put them away. I am bad and I don't... but I am sure they will last a lot longer for those of you who do that. These are great!

Very clever strips. Does not leave any residue and very easy to re-use. I have this on 2/3 machines and am definitely happy with this purchase.

I love Sewing Edge Reusable Vinyl Stops! This is one of the best I have used as a beginner sewist. Follow all the instructions and you will be happy, especially when you are sewing curve seems.

when I was learning to sew as a child on my mother's Singer Featherweight, I would apply a bandaid so that the pad part was opposite the needle. Of course, I had to remove it when I was done with my project or there would be yucky sticky residue. These sewing edges are much better than what was available in the "old days".

1/4 inch here I comeTrying for more consistency in my quilting. I have used it every day.

Really works and are the greatest ever idea...thank you so much. Also got the ones for the rulers and their great too.

Love it love it love it ! Remind me to sew straight, especially when I’m doing a long seam

These strips have come in handy for marking my sewing machine and I love that they're reusable!

Every dummies book gives enough information to give me the courage to explore the device further, on my own which is absolutely necessary on the iPad.

The title of this book is accurate... you're a dummy if you buy it. The authors must be paid by the word because there are lots and lots of unnecessary words in the text, including much superfluous bleating about how great the Ipad is. As far as concise instructions and explanations go, you'll have to look elsewhere for that. Just one of many examples: the Ipad is supposed to automatically connect to your WiFi router, and you don't need a book for that. If there are problems connecting, look on p. 270. It says you'll encounter a "bunch of nasty-sounding terms: DCHP, BootP..." etc etc etc. But instead of digging out the information and defining these nasty-sounding terms and telling the reader how to use them, the authors glibly inform us we'll "probably" never have to use this stuff, and if we do, summon a network administrator or techie friend. The whole book is that way. Save your money.

I received a new iPad as a gift and was at first excited. I'm sure those proficient in 'Apple-ease' found it a smooth transition. I am not familiar with the Apple systems and this book takes it for granted that I spend 30% of my income keeping up with the newest version. The book was not helpful at all for me. You may hiss and boo but as a greenhorn I wasted my money on a usually good series of tutorial books. I need the 'dumbest dummies' version and am sorry for my tech-illiteracy but the title is misleading, to be brief. Why the company cannot produce a users' manual that is realistic and applicable to the task at hand; namely, a user's manual.

This book made it possible to set up my IPad in a very short time, since I didn't buy it at an Apple store where they do that for you. It's dead-on with advice about apps, options, and things to avoid doing that can get a novice "stuck", since the IPad isn't as user-friendly as advertised. Like many of the other "Dummies" books like the one for Windows 7 and IPods, it's essential for ordinary people who aren't particularly adept at technology.

This is the perfect companion to your iPad if you've never had one. It goes over all features, and plainly explains how to use them, as well as providing tips and suggestions of possible uses for the apps. I bought y iPad basically to have internet when I travel, but knew it had to do more than just that for the cost. This book really lets you know how many useful features and uses your iPad has.

I bought this book for my mother who is 76 and had just gotten an ipad. It's written in easy to understand verbiage for someone who isn't as up-to-date on all the new electronic "toys" out there. I liked that it had pictures of the buttons it references which made it much easier to follow than the iPad user's manual (no surprise there!). Also, the book itself isn't a huge tome which makes it easier to pick up and read - a good thing for someone with limited body strength. All in all, I am extremely happy with this purchase.......more important my mother said it was great and she'll definitely use it!

As a previous reviewer wrote when I was deciding whether to purchase this book, the first chapters are very elementary and basic. Anyone who has used an iPad or computer will not need that information. There are many tips that are helpful, though and since my iPad did not come with an instruction manual, I have learned a great deal from purchasing and reading this book.

The baby boomers didn't have computers when they were children. But their children had the beginning of the computer craze, and their grandchildren now have iPads. In order to be able to use iPads with grandchildren, the grandparents need a guide to interpret this what to them is like a foreign language. iPad for Seniors is just the right book for us older folk, me included. It is in large print for easier reading. It starts off with introducing you to iPad features, especially using the Home screen. Then it shows you how to connect to the Internet, email your Grandkids, shop for media and apps. It shows you how to make video calls and instant message. Soon what seems impossible is now fun: the Newsstand app has your favorite magazines, and you can hear music (the sound can be turned higher for the hearing impaired), see videos, get apps you like. And the iPad will help you stay organized with its reminders & notifications. There are maps, iBooks, how to use iCloud help, even troubleshooting tips. I think the best is the "let your iPad find itself" for people, like me, who misplace items. Grandmas & grandpas, this is the iPad "life alert" book.

So far so good. I like that this translation seems less old fashioned than some others. Pevear and Volokhonsky have a mixed reputation--such is the difficulty with putting someone else's words into your own. If everyone wants to know exactly what Tolstoy or Dumas is really like, the best course would be to read them in the original language! However, I do still believe translation matters; what I have found is that in the case of these translators they tend to retain more of the author's intentions. I have been told by Russian readers that Dostoevsky could sometimes read as difficult and confusing in Russian but also more exciting; most popular English translations from the early 20th century tend to even out the dynamics of the text, making it read closer to Jane Austen's voice than you might be comfortable with. Imagine Pulp Fiction, or The Matrix, or Hitchcock (something adventurous ) remade using the most staid and edible film conventions...so much of what makes those stories special would be lost.As far as I understand, this edition retains much of the Dumasness in English and in the process is a great read! A classic like this could be butchered to death by tasteless fools and still hold onto some worth so, since the translation is clean and interesting, the material is elevated. Whatever your preference, this version certainly warrants a place in the market and quite possibly your bookshelf.

I got this for my sister after she had her second child. I kind of felt that she needed a copy with an old school binding for her son to discover on her bookshelf, or in storage, or somewhere around the house like I did as a kid.The copy lived up to the look I wanted. It had the design that would be intimidating when he was learning to read, the design that made it clearly an "adult" book...and then the title: "The Three Musketeers" which was enough, at least for me, to give it a peak inside and discover the adventure.I hope things go the same way here. Its really a must read for childhood and it has that mysterious feel that a kid would eventually be attracted to.

I had read the entire d'Artagnan saga this summer and loved it. But I read where this translation of the first book was really a good one. So I read The Three Musketeers again and was delighted with it. I was able to better appreciate the differences in the four friends and realized that I loved d'Artagnan and really liked the others because d'Artagnan loved them. I am now reading another translation of Twenty Years After. I am enjoying the historical events and the real people who participated in them, and that d'Artagnan participated in then. Dumas has a fine sense of humour and writes wonderful dialogue.

Often older translations of works like the The Three Musketeers can seem stilted to modern readers. Translator Lawrence Ellsworth believes that some of these versions "simply don't properly convey the energy and tone of Dumas's original work" (p. xix). This is not a criticism that could be applied to his translation. This book is lively, carrying the story dynamically from page to page. He manages to do this without some of the glaring anachronisms that can sometimes plague a modern translation. He also provides useful notes that help to explain some of the historic events and references.I'm not qualified to say if this is an accurate translation but is certainly an accessible, highly readable and fun one. Highly recommended.

I have seen several movie versions of this tale, but none do it true justice. It is not difficult to like the four main characters, each is unique, memorable and loyal. I appreciated that they were based upon real men, actual musketeers, who lived, loved and fought during that time in French history. Some of the events in the story are also a matter of historial fact. Dumas has woven an exciting adventure around these men and events, creating a complicated web of intrigue and political machinations.I am very surprised and also delighted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am vastly encouraged to read other novels by this author.FIVE very deserved stars!

There's no point in "reviewing" Dumas' The Three Musketeers - it's an obvious classic, and this is a standard translation of the work. So I'll comment on the presentation. This is the only 99 cent version of this book that I've seen for Kindle that had actual *editing* done to it! It is well laid out, and includes numerous appropriate illustrations. The only problem is that some of the formatting doesn't quite look right. The all-caps text appears tiny and some of the illustration titles use a peculiar mix of fonts that occasionally appear larger or smaller than normal text. It's a minor problem, but it can be distracting.I'm not positive, but I suspect the source text for this is the free Project Gutenberg version. However, unlike most of the cheap Kindle editions that merely copy and paste the text from Project Gutenberg, the editor who created this ebook took the time to convert ALL CAPS to italics, spent some time formatting it, and added illustrations. It also has the coolest looking cover of any Kindle edition of The Three Musketeers. The Penguin Classics edition has better editing and presentation, but it's $13. For 99 cents, this Kindle edition is well worth it. Certainly more worth it than every other 99 cent version I've sampled, and it's definitely better than the free Amazon Services edition.Recommended!

The Prophets of Smoked Meat: A Journey Through Texas Barbecue, by Daniel Vaughn

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Stomachs will ache at the thought of cabeza de vaca (cow’s head), beef clod (beef shoulder), or barbecue brisket (among other delicacies). Undeterred, architect and barbecue fanatic Vaughn, along with photographer Nicholas McWhirter and occasional sidekicks, did a hunting, gathering, and tasting journey throughout Texas to find the best barbecue. Out of the 186 places sampled, only 5 made his best list; the journey to him, though, is worth it. Beginning with the universal definition of barbecue as simply seasoned meat cooked to tenderness over hardwood smoke, the author not only delivers a running commentary on the goodness (or lack thereof) of the proteins, sides, and desserts, he also gives an almost-native’s perspective on the culture. Joints close when they run out of meat, often at 2 p.m., sometimes earlier. Fat counts: The value of well-smoked fat cannot be understated. So do desserts; there’s nothing better, Vaughn states, to counteract protein overload than a bit of something sweet. At the end, 20-ish pit masters are singled out for the specialties (mutton ribs, anyone?), providing quasi-recipes (details on meat, rub, wood, pit, fire, cooking time, it’s done when . . . suggestions, resting, and other pro tips) with the assumption that you’ll know how to interpret this shorthand. The first in a series of Anthony Bourdain–branded books. --Barbara Jacobs

I learned some valuable lessons: stay away from east Texas hot links; understand the difference between direct heat cooking and indirect heat cooking; respect the elegance of a salt and cracked pepper dry rub; and keep that cooker closed!Texas barbecue is an art. This is a fine introduction to that art, and to the artists who create it. My favorite part of the book is the pit master profiles at the end: great portraits and wonderful insights on their process! The photographs are beautiful; with the exception of the chapter focusing on Houston and Dallas, there simply aren't enough of them. I would have enjoyed a little less "I'm from Ohio, but I love Texas Barbecue!" (Dude, you've just described eating at 30 BBQ joints in 36 hours - you don't need to tell us you like 'cue) and more of those lovely photos.I'm still trying to figure out how these guys don't weigh 450 pounds, have dodged diabetes, hypertension, and gout, and remain married.A very entertaining trip through the heart of Brisket, Rib, and Sausage Shangri-la.

This is an amazing book. I really couldn't it down, sitting with a map on my computer screen so I could follow the details of Vaughn and photographer McWhirter's marathon road eating trip. Here is a book that gives details that others leave out; it goes to out-of-the-way joints as well as to the famous places in the state that have lines out the door. Assessments of the barbecue seem fair and there is a lot of good detail to back up the opinions; even when the conclusions aren't positive, the tone is not mean spirited. I really enjoyed Vaughn's personalized and congenial style. The photographs are done with a very practiced eye and contribute greatly to the book. Looking at other reviews of this book, it strikes me that many of those who didn't rate it well seemed to be expecting a different book -- some didn't like the fact that the journey was limited to Texas barbecue; others were expecting a cookbook. For me, the book promised exactly what the last part of the title says: "A Journey Through Texas Barbecue." It may not in fact be for the casual reader -- but that's fine. By the way, the map "Texas BBQ by the Cord" showing what kinds of woods are being used in each place visited alone is worth the cost of the book. Thanks to Anthony Bourdain for making this part of his new food book series.

This was not what I thought the book was - but it turned out to be a great read with a lot of interesting information. Living in Texas, this tome comes in very handy when looking for new joints to visit or not visit.

I love Texas BBQ, and not only that but I love learning about the places and stops along the hundreds of miles of roads that I have never traveled. This book not only reviews many legs of a trip of a lifetime, but it also goes into good detail about the textures, sights, smells, and experiences of traveling just to eat BBQ. Not only does it entail all the locations and pit-stops on a very optimistic journey, but the author also includes bits and pieces of advice and reference as to the very definition of BBQ. Surprisingly there ends up being more mediocre places included in this book than I thought there would. A great read if you like BBQ and the quest for it.

If your looking for a travel guide to some good bbq places this is it. There are some recipes but not many.

Born and raised in texas...naturally I would become a bbq man...I got hooked after reading Aaron Franklins book..a meat-smoking manifesto....through his bbq with Franklin show I knew who Daniel vaughn was....and being that it was strictly about all of Texas bbq...I had to read it...it's a great book...though I did get tired of vaughns constant negative criticisms on many of his stops...it only showed me of things to look out for when time to cook...great book thus far...still think Aaron Franklins book set the bar pretty high for Texas bbq today

Great book about traveling, eating smoked meat, and a fine tribute to pit masters. I am new to smoking meat and bought this book because of Mr. Vaughn’s appearance on No Reservations. After reading the book, I have new ideas for recipes and a desire to make my own pilgrimage to Texas! Do not expect full recipes from this book. Read it with a curious mind and desire to explore.

I have been to many of the BBQ joints that Daniel Vaughn reviews. And I smoke my own meats (chicken, pork, beef, you-name-it) using the low-n-slow philosophy. This is a smart, witty, readable view of Texas and the many (!) styles and adaptations of BBQ across this great state. Not just a coffee-table book. This one has excellent recommendations and delves into the history, techniques, and special practices that make "Texas BBQ" unique in the world.JDMc

Hadrian and the Triumph of Rome, by Anthony Everitt

From Publishers Weekly

The author of biographies of Augustus and Cicero, British scholar Everitt now combines academic expertise with lively prose in a satisfying account of the emperor who ruled Rome from 117 to 138 C.E., the man Everitt says has a good claim to have been the most successful of Rome's leaders. As a youth, Hadrian became the protégé and adopted ward of future emperor Trajan. (Homosexual emperors, including Hadrian, often adopted a successor, a procedure that worked better than letting pugnacious generals fight it out.) After suppressing the Jewish revolt that had begun under Trajan, Hadrian abandoned several of his predecessor's conquests as indefensible. Traveling the empire, he shored up its defenses, which included building Hadrian's Wall in England and another across Germany. Nearing the end of a prosperous, mostly peaceful reign, he adopted two men who also ruled successfully: Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. Everitt presents the Roman Empire, in what he calls tempestuous and thrilling times, as an almost ungovernable collection of polyglot nations dominated by ambitious, frequently bloodthirsty and unscrupulous men. Readers will wonder how Rome lasted so long, but they will enjoy this skillful portrait of a good leader during its last golden age. 2 maps. I enjoyed reading Anthony Everitt's book on Hadrian. Like many other comments here, I too felt he spent too much time describing the political world unto which Hadrian emerges. Frankly, the first half of the book where he does this was on the boring side, and I almost set it aside.Thankfully, the second half where Everitt focuses on Hadrian is much more interesting, particularly the themes of Hadrian's (homo)sexuality and Antinous and how that was thought of in ancient Greece, ancient Rome, and today, as well as Hadrian's love and support of Greek culture and his "Grand Tour" of the Roman empire.I appreciated his introduction and afterwards where he explained particular problems regarding the reliability of ancient sources on Hadrian. I also liked that Everitt integrated the sources into the text, without the use of footnotes. (Is ANYTHING more annoying than to constantly have to flip back and forth??)One concern I had was that the narrative almost seemed too smooth, especially given what Everitt's says about the quality of the sources. He does occasionally go through variations of what happened in particular instances based on the different primary sources, it's just that I wondered about the validity of the rest.Additionally, I would have appreciated much much more perspective on how Hadrian is perceived today and in subsequent years, or how Hadrian affected the course of Rome. The final chapter does this but it was way way too short.I'd like to give the book a 5 because Everitt is such a smooth and polished writer and historian, but, given the above, a 4 fits better.

This is a very well documented biography of the Emperor Hadrian based on historical writings of his contemporaries and later historians. The author is careful not to make too many assumptions about Hadrian's personality, private life and habits and focuses primarily on his reign as emperor and military exploits. Everitt does have a chapter on his relationship with Antinous, the young Bithynian whom Hadrian was so enamored with that he made him into a god after his mysterious death. He explores his relationship with his contemporaries, his soldiers, and his officers more in depth than he does Hadrian's family, assuming this is because of lack of written historical documentation. Everitt also gives an excellent timeline of his travels across the Roman Empire, as well as his methodology for keeping the pax romana rather than using up resources for further expansion. Overall, an excellent book.

A good read, lots of substance........well paced, easy, digestible chapters, with clear text for the casual historian as well as the serious student. The author explores Hadrian as an object of biography, not as a sterile academic 'term paper'. What's really interesting here is the author's quiet allusion to Hadrian as an early example --indeed, likely the original example-- of a world leader at the crossroads of history who questions long held geopolitical assumptions. Like recent past examples (Richard Nixon, Deng Xiaoping, Mikhail Gorbachev), Hadrian looks at the realities of the moment and has the wisdom and courage to see and consider alternatives. In his case, it was the modest retreat of Roman armies to much more defensible, stable borders, but still maintaining the lucrative broad interests of the Roman Empire.....trade routes (the eastern Mediterranean ), key natural resources (Great Britain),friendly allied tribes (present day Spain, Germany), etc. By retreating from the Tigris, Euphrates rivers, moving south of the Danube and west of the Rhine, building a wall across present day southern Scotland, Hadrian help launch a very stable period of economic and social stability across the wider empire that still has implications to this day. During a quiet interlude in the civil wars before the great denouement at Actium (31 BC), Mark Anthony reached the Caspian Sea and present day Baghdad in hopes of overcoming the Armenians and the Parthians......what would the world be the like today if the Romans had remained for a few hundred years? By the way, Anthony had a large contingent of Jewish mercenaries with him at the time.......very tough fighting men for their day.

Another excellent product from Anthony Everitt, although I do have one caveat on this book. There was a seeming paucity of documented information on Hadrian, especially his pre-Emperor years, versus what Mr. Everitt relayed about Augustus and Cicero. This leads to a lot of suppositions which detract only slightly from the overall work. I could honestly say on of the "extars" I gleaned from the book due to the lack of documentation of Hadrian's early life is learning much more about Trajan and his life and times as Emperor. In addition, I did feel that more detail was given in this book to the actual specifics of governing Rome and Roman lifestyle and habits than the readers ever received with the other two biographies.Mr. Everitt has a great way of putting things and I find myself chuckling often through his books. One is very much drawn in and feels like the character in the book has been known for years. I can actually envision some of the things happening. As always, I remain a fan of Mr. Everitt's work. I am willing to purchase any of his writings if on a topic of interest to me.
