Finally, she is an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland, College Park.Tiffani Wallace, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, has been treating patients with dysphagia for over 15 years. Tiffani has worked in various facilities, including schools, SNF's, outpatient, home health and acute care. She is currently working as a clinician in home health and acute care completing all Modified Barium Swallow Studies. While not possessing the wonderful immediacy of his masterpiece, "Civility", Dr. Carter's "The Culture of Disbelief" very artfully highlights an often latent national sentiment. Characteristically referenced meticulously, Carter cites specific instances, modern and historical, of the trivialization of religiousness to support virtually every statement he makes. At the same time, he maintains an easy and accessible style that transitions smoothly from the casual to the sobering. Carter attempts to inject an urgent tone at some points, and while reading one may find oneself nodding along in agreement, but the galvanic effect of "Civility" was not present. Nonetheless, an excellent read from cover to cover.

Stephen Carter's thesis is quite a noble one: he thinks that we as a society have taken religious freedom and morphed it into something of an anti-religion bias. The public square, for instance, seems to give less and less credence to arguments or ideas informed by religion. Pro-lifers or those opposed to gay marriage are written off as 'fanatics' or simply holders of weak, because religiously informed, positions. The establishment and free-exercise clause (which Carter DOES see as a wall of seperation between church and state) has increasinly been used to banish religion from the public square entirely.This is all quite unique for me because I am an non-believer, probably unlike many reviewers here. Even as a non-believer (polite term for atheist) I can see the trivialization of religion in our culture and particularly in the political arena. As we speak, George W. Bush is being dismissed as a 'fundamentalist' because he, like most americans (according to current surveys) opposes gay marriage. Apperently opposing gay marriage ipso facto makes one a fundamentalist which ipso facto marginalizes the whole opinion.Here's the problem: the three stars I've given this book are for the thesis and the very good research (especially in part 1, where the problem is surveyed). The other two stars that I did NOT give the book were for execution. Each chapter seems to be on a wholly new topic (a seperate essay unto itself) and Carter does little to hold them together. The first section diagnoses the problem, the second section discusses the 1st amendment religion clauses (and as a law scholar, Carter gives a VERY surface level account) and the third section (apperently) works at a solution (which I was still waiting for when I closed the book for the final time). In brief, the research was good and Carter brings up many good points; they are just packaged in a quite random, meandering, book.The only other problem to speak of is that on the one hand, Carter chastises current politics (liberal politics) for discounting religious faith; on the other he chastises religious faith for often being too dogmatic and zeolous. BUT THAT IS WHAT RELIGIONS DO!Not all, to be sure, but most any catholic sect, for instance, takes stands, believes sincerely in them, and is convinced that their take is the only right one. Quite simply, most religions firmly beleive that their way is right and others are wrong - that they have access to the 'truth as revealed through god' where the rest are mistaken. To suggest that religion can still be religion while saying, "But I may be completely wrong about divine revelation or commandment," seems to take the religion out of religion. Thus, I (and Stanley Fish has wisely said just this about Carter) think Carter is trying to let faith back into liberalism by telling religion to be more secular. (Be open minded about gay marriage; you might be wrong, after all, Mr. Robertson!). [Read the section on religion in Stanley Fish's "The Trouble With Principle" for these critiques.]To conclude, the issue is one that needs to be addressed and Dr. Carter has produced a well-researched attempt to highlight what is wrong. Sadley, I did not come away from this book with a feeling that its direction and layout were strong, or that Dr. Carter's solutions were workable.

I do want to emphasize that my five star rating does not mean I am in 100% agreement with the author. I doubt that any thoughtful reader will be in total agreement. However, as a book that presents a well thought out and well constructed argument that challenges the reader, this is top drawer.It does require thoughtful reading. Since most will find some points of disagreement, it is easy to be thrown of course and miss what Carter is truly saying. He speaks both from knowledge of constitutional law and from a belief in justice for religious and non-religious equally. He repeatedly illustrates that while a person should be allowed to practice the dictates of his religion, that religion can not be allowed control over non-believers. There will be disagreement as to the extent that a person is allowed to obey the laws of his religion. I have not disagreement with the argument that Native Americans should be allowed to use peyote in their worship, that Mormons should be allowed to practice polygamy, and some other issues. I do have trouble with the idea of allowing animal sacrifice. But my disagreement and any reader's individual disagreement doesn't lessen the value of being presented with an argument which causes the reader to think and to consider his or her own evaluation of the author's premise.

First, let me say that this is a huge book. At 250 pages, you are really getting your money's worth. The town info is great, lots of useful characters, and the scenarios are excellent. I do have some complaints - the layout is more primitive than the other books, especially the neighborhood maps. On the other end of the scale, all the portraits are computer generated. First, it looks pretty hokey (maybe CGI was not as good back then?); second, the facial proportions are wrong for many of the people. This isn't a big deal for, say, Dunwich, but Arkham is somewhat repesctable and misproportioned faces just clashes with the attempted realism of CGI.The standard layout of these books is to have a story by HPL featuring the town, to discuss town history, to break down the town into neighborhoods and show each one in detail, and then to have scenarios.The opening story is "Dreams in the Witch House", which is probably the best available. I really like opening these books with a story by HPL - it is a reminder of how the whole thing got started. The neighborhoods take up a lot of space and describe a great many people, places, and things to meet in Arkham. I wish they would have spent some time talking about architecture in the town history section - I still don't know the difference between "gable" and "gambrel". Some real problems: street names are not clearly marked on the neighborhood maps, even when they are referred to. The combined map is not reprinted in the neighborhood section, nor is each neighborhood map shown as one piece; we only see fragments at a time. I think the Kingsport sourcebook does this best, so I assume that the layout people were still pefecting their craft at this early stage. As always, the town directory is helpful considering especially that there are so many entries that an index is needed to quickly find anything. All of the scenarios are great, although one ("the Hills Rise Wild") really would have been better in the Dunwich book, which was short on good scenarios.Also included is a tear-out map of Arkham on very nice paper, and an issue of THE ARKHAM ADVERTISER, which also becomes a handout.In all, this is a very informative sourcebook, with plenty of people, places, and things for investigators to explore. The only drawback, besides the poor maps, is that the spooky atmosphere was not convreyed very well. Reading the other sourcebooks, I definitely felt the atmosphere; Arkham didn't do that for me. It could have been better, but was still great.

The wonderful thing about roleplaying games are their endless possibilities for action- one can literally do anything within the framework of the rules; the only limit is the glass ceiling of your imagination. Though there IS the limitation put forth by the necessities of playing a particular module or campaign- if the game takes place in Canada, it is probably a good idea to go there and not to Somalia. With this book, all limitations are gone.The homebase of H.P. Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu investigators is in all probability Arkham, perhaps being their place of employement or residence. With this new Sourcebook, H.P. Lovecraft's Arkham, we now have a literal blueprint of the town. Who lives where, what is the criminal underground like, what are the industries and buisnesses, public transporation, what do the govement and police consist of, etc. It literally creates an entire world for the player to exist in.We have not even bothered to play any of the game scenarious at the back because just existing in the town and creating our own situations have been fascinating enough. For example, we had the investigators encounter and befriend an underground movement of Anarchist whom attempted to unionize the immigrant factory workers, wipe out the Arkham govement, simultanously blew up the three power stations in the town and the water tower, did battle with the national guard and took over!There is literally endless possibilities for play. Think Grand Theft Auto times a thousand. The book is brilliant and besides having the original Call of Cthulhu sourcebook, I see this book as being absolutly essential. There are gangs and cults and underground movements and plenty of beasts and forbidden tomes and strange people and places to go and situations to become involved in, besides ones that the Storyteller creates herself. Included is also information on the Miskatonic University and its professors, campus, and library.Also included is information pertaining to the surrounding area around Arkham for those Investigators brave enough to leave town, for, indeed, there is much that is truly monsterous writhing about the periphery.Although I see this book as essential, if you dig it, there are other simular and exciting books for those wishing to expand your play world- there is H.P. Lovecraft's Kingsport, H.P. Lovecraft's Dunwich, and Escape From Innsmouth. Thus opening up the possibility to wander throughout four complete, though completly unique and hideously decadent, towns all within reach of each other. I can't wait for the release of the hardcover Miskatonic University sourcebook.

Great book with a map inside that you can tear out. I used this book exclusively for a CoC group I ran for a whole year long. I really appreciated the block to block set up with the various places of import and the mythos related possibilities. This is a great place to have players start from and explore.

I purchased this book as a gift for my foodie son. He tells me he has already found a new (to him) favorite coffee house using the book. Since he travels abroad frequently, he intends to use the book’s recommendations there as well. I’m very happy with this gift.

When a book is described as a coffee table book, one imagines a large flat book filled with attractive photos and interesting, descriptive dialog. That is not the case with this book. The book is about 7 x 9 inches and about 1 1/2 inches thick. The pages are of a course off-white paper, no photos and each coffee shop location is given a very brief 1/4 page description. Very uninteresting or stimulating. A coffee table book is meant to stimulate. Do not waste your money on this book. I will be returning it!

There was so much good stuff in Battlefield of the Mind that I made a decision to go back through the book a second time to capture all the notable text so the first time through, I could just simply enjoy the read.I must share that aside from the plethora of solid, helpful information, there was one area, in particular, which struck a very important chord with me.Before I met my husband, I used to get moments of overwhelming despair; despair which would always preempt a significantly positive event or season. I had a hard time verbalizing how I felt, but the term ‘Dark Clouds' seemed to come close. These clouds would block the sun, cause everything to appear gloomy and gray, and leave a pervasive feeling of anguish. It felt like a self-defeating behavior, except I had no intention of sabotaging my happiness or joy, so I didn’t understand their presence. I've never suffered from depression and have a 'never say die' attitude; fear and defeat are not emotions I spend any time on. So when the dark clouds would roll in, I didn't understand why, nor did I know how to prevent them from showing up.Thank you, Ms. Meyer, for giving my experience a name - Mind-Bending Spirits. In this section she speaks of the evil spirits lurking around and the havoc they can play on our mind. Boy did this hit home! Her experience and advice in this area was invaluable, but even beyond that, feeling understood and having my feelings validated was priceless. Even though I haven't experienced those awful Dark Clouds in years, I now have an understanding of the situation and feel confident that should they return, I'm equipped to deal with them in a positive, healthy, proactive way.Do you suffer from conditions of the mind such as worry, doubt, confusion, depression, anger, and feelings of condemnation? These are all addressed, as are the consequences of judgmental, critical, suspicious, wandering, and passive minds. It’s really fascinating reading and relatable on so many levels. I am so grateful for this book! My sister recommended it to me and when I got it I couldn't put it down and I cried almost all the way through. It spoke to me so very deeply and I took note of all the scriptures that confirmed what I was reading. I have since been slowly letting go of things that have bugged and bothered me for YEARS. I am slowly, daily, reminding myself to have the MIND OF CHRIST. Life has become less lonely and I look forward with new hope each day for a good future...not thinking all the time of just growing old and not looking for an exciting fruitful future!!Thank the Lord for Joyce Meyer's ministry and for showing me a way OUT of my bad mind set!! I first read this book about 15 years ago. It helped me at the time, and it is helping me now. I gave away my old copy years ago, and decided to buy it for myself and my daughter again. We frequently read books at the same time, and we have both been experiencing life challenges lately. Reading it at a new stage in my life, I am gaining new insights as if it is a brand new book. Everything in it is relevant to my life. Joyce Meyer shares how she struggled for years with negative thinking. It is not enough to just try to "think positive." If you are a Christian, then you know the Word of God (the Bible with the Gospel of Jesus Christ) contains many prescriptions for our lives that bring lasting healing -- way more healing than any pharmaceutical medication could bring. This book provides guidance on how to refocus our thoughts on God's promises and guidance and overcome the negative thoughts that might otherwise cause us to feel defeated, angry or lost. I highly recommend this book to anyone battling depression, suicide, anger, PTSD, and other challenges affecting emotions and mental health.

I don’t know where to start, other than to say to GOD be the GLORY!!! IF your wondering if you should buy this book-DO IT!!! If you are suffering from depression, anxiety, fear, doubt, self pity, jealousy and anything in between please READ THIS!!! I was delivered from all of these areas reading this book!!! So much so I’m going to read it again!!! Talking about having your eyes of understanding opened!!! Don’t wait until you’re done reading the book to study, and put the principles into practice- start immediately!!! Take notes and GO BACK and use them!!! Truly God used Joyce Myers when she wrote this book. It was through reading this that 1) I finally repented for something I had done 11 months ago 2) came to an understanding of my depression- what it is, where it comes from and how to fight it and last but not least 3) I received a revelation to a question that I’ve been asking God for 4 years!!! While reading this book God showed me the answer to every question and also revealed it was only supposed to be a 4 month process!!! But because of my disobedience, complaining and passiveness, it took me 48 months to be delivered from something that was supposed to only take 4 months...But to GOD be the GLORY!!! My fire has been rekindled and I can’t wait to tell the world about it 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
