As a youth group leader, I try to give my children the opportunity to have a choice in the materials we work on together. At the beginning of this year, I gave them several different books to choose from and they decided on Keeper of the Light. I was a little reticent to dive into this book because of the one very negative review and, out of caution, chose to order a copy for myself to preview first. I felt very comfortable letting them read it because, having read Father Arseny last year, the kids wanted something a little easier to read. Additionally, we have talked repeatedly about the humanity of our blessed Saints and how their imperfections give us hope that we might all have a chance to grow and emulate them in our own lives. Before reading this book, I read the negative review to the group out loud and asked them to reflect on their thoughts. They echoed the sentiment that Saints are people- win! Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, and I do not wish to criticize the other reviewer, just to bring to this forum the perspective of my group of little "Saints in progress." Below are their reviews of this book in their own words. I also asked each of them to reflect on one overall "takeaway" from the book. Enjoy...Ginny Seeley, Four Evangelists Youth Group Leader(1) Matt's Review (14 Year old boy from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"Keeper of the Light was a great book. I am not a big book reader but I could not put this book down. It made me understand how lucky I am to be in a place where I would not get in trouble for my religion. I would rate this book a 9 out of 10. The lesson that I took away from this book is to be patient."(2) Connor's Review (15 Year old boy from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"After reading this book in my Youth Group, I feel that the simple language is great for kids and the book does not go into gruesome detail. It does a good job talking about a Saint, while also maintaining their humanity. Saints are people and make mistakes and have bad days. The book describes these traits well and, while it could go into more detail during saintly parts, it is easy to understand. The lesson I took away from this book is that God never lies."(3) Logan's Review (13 Year old Girl from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"I read this book in my Church Youth Group. After reading the very negative review, I wasn't eager to read this book. However, if you let that review influence your decision to read this book, you've made a mistake. This was an amazing book. It didn't paint St. Macrina as evil, rather as human. She was a saint because she was good, despite challenges. If it was easy, then we would all be saints. Overall, I loved the book. The lesson I took away from this book was that you should always trust in God."(4) Teddy's Review (13 Year old boy from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"I think that St. Macrina was a great book. The author wrote the book well and made up all the unknown parts of her life in a good way. She accurately depicts the saint and shows God's love through her in a simple way. This book can be read by anyone and it talks about a relatively unknown person. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read it and I'll be other readers will like it, too. The lesson I took away from this book is that God is always with you."(5) Addy's Review (11 year old girl from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"I think that this book was one of the best Christian books I have read. In the beginning of the book, it was very wild. I feel bad for Mus when he had to be just taken out from his home because he was Christina. I read this book in my Youth Group. St. Macrina is a great Saint. The lesson I took away from this book is to be grateful."(6) Vasili's Review (11 Year old boy from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"I can understand peoples' opinions about the book making St. Macrina look spoiled; but, in my opinion, it made her feel more human and reinforced the idea that the saints were just like all of us and we can be like them. I give it a 9.47 out of 10. The lesson I took away from this book is that there is always hope."

I enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it. I am a Christian but I am not Orthodox. I would recommend to someone looking for a good book, and it is especially good for young adults, I think.

Great book which will be used with a church school class to teach the importance of God's holy ones. Highly recommended.

I am constantly on the look-out for great children's books. This book was not intended to be a children's book, but her life is written in story format. My daughter, who is seven loved it. It has sparked her interest in other lives of the saints.

this is a a horrible, awful, sick book, i would even say its evil , the lady who wrote it is a good story teller, she has talent , but she has used her talent to write evil and slanderous thing about a saint , Macrina's life happened so long ago, the author used her imagination to make a exciting story . problem is that she has made this saint in to a cursing , name calling, fit throwing, angry, desiring comforts , proud, caring about thing of this world a lot, having a temper, yeah before finishing this story to my children , i started editing what a read , and decided that even if we changed the names since this book seems slanderous to the saint , that reading about wicked made up people are not even edifying , which is a bummer , my husband said we should just throw it away , and wait for our other story book to come , the saint story books by Mary Fabyan Windeatt are good :) you should read them instead :) Saint Cathrerine of Siena is really good , and Saint Rose of Lima is realy good too , me and the children enjoyed them and there lives were holy and set apart , it is challenging to read about reall saints who loved the Lord , oh FATHER ARSENY is awesome too , his life , there is two books about him,my husband reads it to our whole family we enjoy it , my eight yr old lil girl says its fun and my buys who are 10 and 12 like it too my 12 yr old says its good and edifying and they really like it . so its ok if you dont get this awful book , there is good story books to read , that can challenge you to more holyness :) im excited about my other books we ordered by Mary Fabyan Windeatt , she has a whole series we are waiting for three new books to read yay :)

My 5- and 7-year olds loved this reading this book with me! One of the coolest aspects of this book is that the author makes it read like a novel, which is extremely engaging and hard to find in Saints stories, especially for kids. While much of the book is fiction, filling in the gaps of what is known of St. Macrina's life, the author does a good job of helping to bring the persecution to life, in a way that is likely to have happened. I would've liked to see a bit more detail into her prayer life and love of God, but I do appreciate how human and approachable Bev made this saint. Saints were people who struggle like we do. Please write a sequel(s) about her saintly grandchildren! My kids are requesting it!! Thank you :-)

I enjoyed Keeper of the Light. This is an exciting tale of a woman who went into hiding for her faith in the time of the late Roman Empire. Along with her husband and son, she struggled to remain undiscovered by soldiers who hunted Christians for sport. The author takes us through Macrina's life as she contends with not only being on the run, but also with having to give up so much for God. In the end she discovers her difficulties were not in vain. She has much to teach her grandchildren who are placed in her care and the heritage of their faith is carried on through them. The author has written an engaging historical tale that sweeps the reader along in the ups and downs of Macrina's life. The illustrations, historical notes and glossary all help complete the story. Although written for young adults, I would recommend it for all ages, and especially for all those interested in historical tales and faith experiences.
