About the Author
Tanya Phillips, owner of Bee Friendly Austin, is a sideliner beekeeper in Central Texas managing up to 150 colonies. Utilizing her BA in Education, she teaches classes at her apiary in SW Austin and sells raw honey and hive products in several boutique shops in Austin and surrounding Hill Country locations. Her interest in bees started out of simple curiosity and grew to sharing her passion, knowledge, and skills with others through education, community outreach, fundraising for research development, and generating increased public awareness for her beloved bees. Her husband Chuck shares that passion and together they founded a nonprofit that hosts an annual 'Tour de Hives' event to help fund bee research and education. Their apiary has been featured in several film documentaries, TV episodes, editorials, and websites discussing the importance of bees to the global food supply and she is frequently asked to speak as an expert in beekeeping on radio programs and at public events. As the founder of the Travis County Beekeepers Association she served as board President from 2013-2016 and is a graduate of the first Master-Level Beekeeping Course with the University of Montana. Future plans include travel into third world countries to teach beekeeping skills to the local residents and to continue in her quest to help save the world, one bee at a time!

Tanya's book is a great overall guide for beginner beekeepers. It has tons of beautiful pictures, easy to follow text and instructions, and the basic information anyone needs to start beekeeping confidently.As an intermediate beekeeper with 2 warre hives and 2 top-bar hives, I sure wish I had had this book when I first started beekeeping!I find the information pertinent, relevant, and clearly laid out. I also learned or was reminded of quite a few things I did not already know, and very practical tips about swarming, cross combing, record keeping. Great all around beginner to intermediate book and a good place to start for any new beekeeper.Also, I bought it for myself, but my 12 year old son ended up taking it for himself and has been avidly reading from it, probably because the explanations, the pictures and the layout are very reader friendly instead of dry and hard to read like most other books on the subject.I highly recommend this book to any beginner to intermediate beekeeper, great all-around info book!
For the all new beekeepers it is the best introduction book I have seen so far. Lots of great information presented in very “user-friendly†form. Highly recommended. If this is your very first beekeeping book, you do not have to look farther.
Really interesting read with plenty of pictures and examples. I bought a couple of books and this one really gives a good amount of information and helped me really get my bees started.
this is the best beginner beekeeping book on the market. i've had the honor of taking classes with tanya and chuck, they are both so infectious with bee love, you can't help but want to keep bees after meeting them. the photos are excellent!
Decent book on bee keeping. Would encourage readers to check out Beekeeping for Dummies first to have a more thorough background knowledge before reading this book, but after doing so, this book is good too.
