Louise Fili is director of Louise Fili Ltd, a New York-based design studio specializing in branding for food packaging and restaurants. Fili was art director of Pantheon Books for eleven years, where she designed close to 2000 book jackets. She is a member of the Art Directors Hall of Fame, and received the medal of lifetime achievement from the AIGA and the Type Directors Club.Fili is the author of Elegantissima, Grafica della Strada, and Graphique de la Rue. She also co-authored and designed Italianissimo and The Cognoscenti's Guide to Florence. With her husband, the design historian Steven Heller, she is co-author of Italian Art Deco, British Modern, Dutch Moderne, Streamline, French Modern, Deco España, German Modern, Deco Type, Design Connoisseur, Counter Culture, Typology, Stylepedia, Euro Deco, Scripts, Shadow Type, Stencil Type, and Slab Serif Type. "Labor of love" is an over-used phrase -- but it perfectly describes this endeavor, by Louise Fili. Her comment/confession that her numerous trips to Italy were mere excuses to photograph more street signs, made me smile. (not that anyone ever needs an "excuse" for one more trip to Italy) But I knew what she meant. Her dedication and enthusiasm for typography and letter forms is on beautiful display here; and she has curated a lavish banquet of note-worthy signs for our enjoyment. Excellent photos that put us at eye level with the signs*, stylish page design a la Fili, and a book that is also a beautiful object. My advice: Keep it out, and flip through often.*As a sidebar, the final image in the book is of Louise taking photos in Bologna. Seen in profile, wearing a Raphael-esque red beret and black stockings, and holding her camera "extender" straight up; she looked very much like the Sienese "Alfieri" or flag-throwers from the Palio pageant. One of their many intricate maneuvers is to wind the huge heraldic flags into a tight vertical "rocket" and then shoot it right up into the air. I did a double-take!

I really like Louise Fili’s design and work.There is no doubt of the historical importance for design and typography that the images in this book record.For type and design fans, who like Italian vernacular letters, this would be a great gift. Five stars there.But, I kind of wish it was an e-book too since, it is all images.or a web site.The image quality would have been better if a pro photographer took the images with a full frame pro camera and lens.Of the two books, this one is better.

Every page a visual gem - signs that people see everyday - past and present - rich in color and content. You will look at it many times - it doesn't disappoint - this book will inspire you.

About the Author

Vladimir Nabokov was born on April 23, 1899, in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Nabokovs were known for their high culture and commitment to public service, and the elder Nabokov was an outspoken opponent of anti-Semitism and one of the leaders of the opposition party, the Kadets. In 1919, following the Bolshevik Revolution, he took his family into exile. Four years later he was shot and killed at a political rally in Berlin while trying to shield the speaker from right-wing assassins.  The Nabokov household was trilingual, and as a child Nabokov was already reading Wells, Poe, Browning, Keats, Flaubert, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Tolstoy, and Chekhov alongside the popular entertainments of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Jules Verne. As a young man, he studied Slavic and romance languages at Trinity College, Cambridge, taking his honors degree in 1922. For the next 18 years he lived in Berlin and Paris, writing prolifically in Russian under the pseudonym "Sirin" and supporting himself through translations, lessons in English and tennis, and by composing the first crossword puzzles in Russian. In 1925, he married Vera Slonim, with whom he had one child, a son, Dmitri.  Having already fled Russia and Germany, Nabokov became a refugee once more in 1940, when he was forced to leave France for the United States. There he taught at Wellesley, Harvard, and Cornell. He also gave up writing in Russian and began composing fiction in English. His most notable works include Bend Sinister (1947), Lolita (1955), Pnin (1957), and Pale Fire (1962), as well as the translation of his earlier Russian novels into English. He also undertook English translations of works by Lermontov and Pushkin and wrote several books of criticism. Vladimir Nabokov died in Montreux, Switzerland, in 1977.

The book includes interviews, literary essays and five short articles on Lepidoptera. Since the book covers the main themes in Nabokov's life on one hand and is carefully compiled by Nabokov himself on the other, it presents a kind of self-portrait. Its author was a remarkably relentless rewriter, who noted that "[he] rewrote several times every word that [he] has ever published" and that even his recounting of the last night's dream to his wife was "but the first draft", and so this book is the result of no less a meticulous labor than his novels are. It presents a carefully drafted portrait, at times blatantly revealing, at times guardedly mystifying, but always elegantly or freshly phrased.In his "Lectures on Literature", Nabokov mentions a character in "Bleak House", a man appearing only for a sentence or two just to help carry in from the street an old man in his chair. He gets a tuppence for his labors, tosses it in the air, catches it over-handed, and leaves. Nabokov points out that this one word, "over-handed", makes all the difference: it is a drop of color which renders even an incidental character alive. It seems that Nabokov's own public persona is similarly brought to life with the stories of borrowing a television set (which otherwise he did not watch) to see the first man landing on the Moon, or of having driven a car twice in his life (both times disastrously).Some of the essays presented in the book are real gems. The 4-page piece "On Adaptation" is a beautiful critique of Robert Lowell's unfortunate rendition in English of Mandelshtam's famous poem. The highly amusing penultimate sentence, where Nabokov applies to one of Lowell's poems the techniques Lowell used in his version of Mandelshtam's, makes the most expressive argument for literal translation and for preserving the writer's intent. In a way, this one sentence makes a better case for Nabokov's verbatim translation of "Eugene Onegin" than the much longer if very engaging article answering Wilson's critique of Nabokov's translation of Pushkin's masterpiece.Another essay, "Inspiration", provides a rare glimpse into the writer's sanctum sanctorum: a detailed description of a writer's interaction with his muse. Nabokov presents here several examples of what he considers inspired writing and expresses hope that students will learn to recognize it in the books they read. The students of Nabokov will certainly recognize inspiration in his own writing, revealing itself in elegant phrasing and fierce independence of thought and making his answers even to the most mundane questions worth reading.

Living in a time where being genuinely disdainful of anything is somehow frowned upon, "Strong Opinions" is, very much, a needed exhalation. I found the interviews to be beguiling and delightful--a compendium of Nabokov's inclinations and literary acumen surpassed only by his autobiography "Speak, Memory", as well as his literary critiques.For Nabokov (a Russian ex-patriot and a self-proclaimed American novelist, having first hand experience with the ironclad censorship of at-the-time Russia) candid dissent was a luxury to be exercised, not cast aside. And so he delighted in American frankness and was nothing but during interviews, for why shouldn't he be? These were parlays in which his opinions were being openly solicited; not your opinions, nor mine, but his. And how bewitching these interviews are because of that!In some of the reviews concerning this book, so much useless emphasis has been placed on Nabokov's disenchantment of the world's most regarded writers and novels (in this text); however shocking, is authentic, but there's more meat to this book than their blind grievances imply: Fascinating notes on the book and film version of "Lolita". Relenting to articulated gems within books he cared little for. Reminiscence of his youth. His love of Pushkin, butterflies, his family, lecturing, Kubrick, the USA, transiency and so on.Nothing contrived. Everything, quite real.If anyone holds to the notions that their favored author should reflect their personal beliefs tit for tat--really, imbeciles of the most vapid sort (scroll down past some reviews for prime examples)! You will never agree completely with Vladamir Nabokov, but that was never his intent! This man was always a "party of one", his thoughts were his own and he could have cared less whether or not people acquiesced to him. He was faithful to his family, his art and his opinion. For him (as with ourselves) that's all that matters.

The title says it all. The last section of the book, some twenty pages consists of primarily lepidoptera papers which may or may not interest fiction devotees of N's fiction. His generous use of the epithet "philistine" may rouse some prejudice against N.'s apparently pharisaical and insolent notions on literature, psychology, politics and such, but he always is sure to qualify those strong opinions as solely his own; in large, he abstains from truth claims that would make his book little more than the exegesis of a Pharisee. Besides, one doesn't read a book of opinions for the author's Truth (with a "T!"), unless that is, you are a Kurt Vonnegut follower. Great insights, humor and opinions from a great author. Minus a star or two for a certain degree of repetitiveness.

One of the most useful books I've ever read.

Nabokov at his best. Have to live reading his answers to the interviewer. Really brings some light to his thinking, creativity, and motivation.

Elegant dining with not a lot of fuss!Let her guide you to take on a recipe you may not have tried and look forward to the results!Love all her tips along the way, just follow and you'll be delighted!I have all her cook books and have followed her through the years...

All her books are excellent.

Didn't like it much. It just seems all over the place and recipes not super delicious.

I purchased this bool originally from the author when I was taking classes from her and purchased this one because the original one was falling apart from use. I would recommend for all cooks regardless if they are beginners or experts.

I love anything by this author

Marlene Sorosky has written many books and I have found them very useful. This is an earlier book but I use it.

Bought this after using Sorosky's Year Round Holiday Cookbook which is my all-time favorite. Entertaining on the Run did not disappoint. Besides some amazing recipes that are organized around themes, there are ideas for advanced preparation that I find very helpful as well as nutritional analysis, prep times and information on refrigeration and/or freezing. Recipes I've tried always impress and many have become family favorites. There are many informational items I use such as using plain and flavored yogurt cheese instead of cream cheese. I now know how to make flavored cream cheese that has far fewer calories than the real thing.

You can't overlook the older kids at Easter. They don't necessarily want candy, and they don't want stuffed animals. Older kids and adults are into coloring books now - go figure. Okay, this is definitely in questionable taste, but still funny.

This should be required reading for anyone considering a job as a transit bus driver. And veteran drivers will enjoy this book as well since it so accurately and enjoyably describes one of the most misunderstood and most important professions in the United States.

This is a very well written book and should be required reading for any transit customer. It's the most educational material a rider could read, if you want to know why your bus is late, or perhaps why that other driver is educating you on why you shouldn't walk in front of the bus before boarding. Whether you're a passenger or an operator, this book covers it all. Not only that, you will learn what operators go through on a daily basis, and some of it ain't pretty, folks.I drove transit buses for 14 years and was a transit supervisor for 11 years after that. Deke knows of what he speaks.If you're looking for a great gift for someone who rides, drives, or has anything to do with public transportation, this is the gift .

I love memoirs. What really made this one interesting was how eye opening it was. I have never ridden a transit bus or train. I've ridden a school bus but that's nowhere near the same. I've never thought about what it would take to be a bus driver, the danger they face each day, or the things that they have to consistently aware of. I salute each and every one of you. As for your book, you made me laugh, you made me think, you even made me raise my eyebrows and shake my head but you kept my interest. I can only say "You are a 'writer' who drives a bus."

In real life, I ride a lot of buses run by multiple transits (e.g. In the past two years in random order: Sound Transit, Community Transit of Snohomish County Washington, Island Transit of Island County Washington, Skagit Transit, TransLink of Vancouver BC, BC Transit of British Columbia, Intercity Transit of Olympia Washington, Pierce Transit) and yes about once a quarter a year Deke's Trimet) and sit on a transit community advisory committee - and like Deke, I face reprimands when staff notice I mention which committee I sit on. I also do a lot of commenting on transit in cyberspace. No writing provides more intellectual illumination of the issues transit operators face than this tome. As such, if you have anything to do with transit - operator, rider, administrator, dispatcher, maintainer, advisor OR consultant - READ THIS BOOK!!!!For instance, if you are a rider as I am you will learn what behaviors will keep you safe from a meet n greet with 40 tons of machinery. If you are an advisor as I am or administrator or Board member or maintainer or consultant; you will understand what transit operators actually do and the very genuine stresses transit operators operate under.I really did not realize until I read this book cover to cover also the difficulties transit operators have with repetitive motion, seeing around the bus, and just the general physical & mental toll of the job. That's BEFORE we get to the horrid rising epidemic of assaults against Trimet operators.I also really have decided for this Christmas to request a jacket that IS reflective so I will have two reflective jackets - one heavy and now one light. Even though a Skagit Transit operator kindly gifted me a little LED, most of my jackets are dark green or you guessed it black. Just another little tip I picked up from reading this book.You will pick up a lot more great tips how to be a safer and more appreciative user of transit after reading this book. I highly recommend this book for the public transportation community - it should truly be on all your Amazon Smile wishlists.

I have always been in awe of anyone who has the courage and steely nerves to drive anything for a living. Especially those who have to do it while dealing with the public at the same time. "Deke" , gives a usually humorous, and sometimes frightening view of life in the driver's seat of a city bus driver...MAN are they brave, and under appreciated. If you enjoy the occasional view of the world from another's eyes, you'll like this book, and you'll like Deke N. (Decon) Blue...he's one of the good guys.

A very interesting view into the life of a transit operator. A bus driver sees all walks of life, and this book gives you a beautifully written insight into not only the heart of a city and it's people, but that of the writer itself. Gripping, and a great read.

Brings back so many memories I have personally experienced in my 38-years before I was beaten near death and lost my career due to the serious injuries inflicted on me. I miss socializing with the public, my co-workers and the pride I had in providing a safe and courteous service to my many loyal customers. Without them, I would not have the rich experience of so many wonderful people, with the exception of the 3 thugs who, because we're on a cocaine and beer induced frenzy, decided, I was their next target. Yes, they did get caught but the judge let them out of incarceration after only 3 months jail time. These were the few, but I have long life friends who started off at the beginning, to be my passengers. Miss them all, and this book describes to a "t" what we all experience, whether it is in Canada, the USA, or Europe. Deke&Blue tells it the way it is in our profession. Thank you for rolling me down memory lane!

The book itself is fine however, the title explicitly states that the Kindle version comes with an access code to the Navigate 2 Essentials site. After extensively searching the book and contacting Amazon I was informed that the Kindle version does not have an access code despite falsely being advertised and sold with the impression that this would be included. If you buy the Kindle version just be aware that you will not gain access to the Navigate 2 Essentials site and will have to find an alternate means to an access code.

I'm currently taking an EMT course and this is definitely the handbook of it all. If you buy the new version, there's an online access code in the back cover that gives you access to online quizzes, summaries, outlined, audio book, etc. for 1year :) Definitely handy for reviewing when you're driving and also when you want to test yourself on the material. The book can also be a paper holder for strong winds and kill spiders, or knock someone down if this was thrown at them (it's thick with knowledge). 0_0

It's a big, fat, expensive book. It's got everything you need to know though! If someone breaks in your house, throw this at them! Then pick up the book and it will tell you exactly how to fix them. If you need it, buy it! Like I said, everything you need to know! It's also good at helping you sleep!

UPDATE: This book DOES come with an access code. HOWEVER, you need to confirm what access code you NEED first. This text book comes with ESSENTIALS access, not ADVANTAGE, PREFERRED or PREMIER. Many EMS classes require PREMIER so you need to make sure you are purchasing what you need.I originally rated this 5 stars. However, I'm changing it to 1. This whole access code nonsense is very deceptive, especially when many people believe it is what they need when it says "Essentials."

The physical version of this textbook is GINORMOUS. I hate carrying heavy textbooks, and prefer to use kindle versions whenever possible, that way I can take my tablet wherever I am and do some reading.Content wise, this version of the textbook has exactly what the physical version has. It is not, however, an exact replica of the page layout of the physical version. I don't really care about that, as long as the content is the same I will get what I need out of the book.One thing to note is that there is NOT an access code with this version. I called the JB Learning and purchased the access code as a standalone. When I bought the access code, I was able to use a discount code. I am not sure if that is something they always do, but it made the overall price of the kindle version textbook and the access code to be less than what the physical textbook would have been - so that is something to think about.As for the textbook itself...all l I can say is that it is a textbook. Course reading is not always exciting, but this book gets the job done, and is an integral part of the EMS training.

Bought brand new in paper back format description said the book had access code to Navigate 2, which it did, however when trying to use the code the website explicitly said the code had already been redeemed. How is this possible? The code should not have expired because the book itself was brand new. Book was great price but without access code it is unnerving and frustrating.

This book is needed for my EMT course...what I love about it most is that theres a scratcher inside..once you scratch it you go to their website, use the code and if you have an mp3 player, you can download the audio which reads each chapter word by word! It was very helpful in my EMT class. The workbook really helps you understand the material.

I love that this book has SO MANY practice questions. I was impressed by how fat it was! Lots of bang for your buck. You get vocabulary matching, 30-40 multiple choice, fill in the blanks, crossword and applied context multiple choice, fill in the bank and short answer questions for each chapter. On some chapters you also have anatomy labeling, It's a great resource for reviewing important material. The questions focus on a mix of vocabulary and essential concepts, but also have critical thinking questions such as a given scenario and logic of problem diagnosis and appropriate interventions.I LOVE THAT THE ANSWER KEY INCLUDES PAGE NUMBERS FROM THE TEXTBOOK SO YOU CAN FIND THE EXPLANATION SO EASILY.It wasn't required for my EMT course, but even if I was cash-strapped I still highly recommend this workbook. Definitely helped me retain information better after reading each chapter and were great for review prior to tests.

I got this to help my niece cope with the death of her mother, but I found it helped me cope with the loss of my sister just as much. It might be written as a children's book, but I've been recommending it to anyone who's lost someone they love. It's especially comforting for people who (like me) aren't religious but need and want something to believe in.

This beautifully written book would be best given to a child by a loved one that will be passing away soon, leaving for a long trip or perhaps stationed overseas. This book has a strong message to look for signs of love everywhere. This was a great buy and I highly recommend!

I'm a child psychologist and I have two boys (ages 5 & 10). Since the time the older son was little, I have been in the habit of putting magic kisses on their knees everyday before we say goodbye. They could then look at their knees during the day and be reminded that my love is always around and in them. Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs accomplishes the same "connective support structure" to little ones, but in lots of different ways and with beautiful imagery and colors. I read Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs to my 5 year old on his first day of kindergarten -- twice actually! He thought I wrote it because the concepts and imagery are all the sort of things we all say to our babies when reassuring them of our love and helping them to feel safe and secure in their little worlds while they explore away from us. This book accomplished two things. It serves as a supportive and therapeutic way for children to interpret and manage their feelings when they're away from us. It also promotes mindfulness practice in little ones, but encouraging them to look at natural phenomenon in the natural world and to understand that all of it connects all of us. It is also written at a level that is perfect for little ones to work on their reading skills. Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs is a book that is good for children, good for families and eventually, good for us all.

The illustrations in this book are simply beautiful. The language used to express such a higher level concept to young children flows well together and it is evident that this book was created for others with lots of love.This book would make the perfect gift for children who suffer from separation anxiety, especially if they are going through a move away from loved ones or are experiencing grief after the loss of a loved one.The book focuses on our connections to nature and the world around us, and uses those natural elements as cornerstones in the dialogue of kisses from the sun and hugs from the moon.

We purchased this book for our eight year old who lives in two separate homes. We often talk about sun and moon kisses and hugs as a way to think of each other and remember our love even when she is at her other house. The illustrations are adorable and the the story is so sweet!

This is a charming picture book that teaches young readers that love is all around us. The author uses nature to provide examples of love reaching out to us. One can see love in the sun, the moon, the stars, grains of sand, the wind, and butterflies to name just a few.The book might be used to assuage the fears of children who suffer from separation anxiety, the trauma of divorce or grief at the loss of a loved one. While it is a beautiful message for any age, I especially recommend it to children in the six to ten age range. Fletcher's illustrations enhance the flow of the message and portray the story beautifully.

This touching tale is a back-and-forth between a child and a beloved adult who are unable to be together. As the child misses their dear one, they are lovingly reminded of all the walls that they can be connected even when they are apart."The sun will catch your kiss and use light speed, to forward it right on to me.""Love is in each sttar twinkling in space and every frostly snowflake licking your face.""Each grain of sand means I'm in reach..."The book ends with the a final message of hugs and kisses, telling the precious child "I'll always love you, Little One."While I think that this book would have been a wonderful read for before (and during) the times my husband and I have been away from the kids, I also think it can be used to explain when someone has passed away. From a (former) librarian's point of view, it was always difficult to find books that worked well to explain how, while death separates us it doesn't mean we can't be together in other ways, for smaller children. I found 2 or 3 that I kept on hand that used common images (like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly for instance) to explain death and leaving, but it wasn't easy to find things that explained and comforted without placating or being too cutesy to really help. And, especially with picture books and the under 6 years old crowd, it's a careful balance.This book hits that balance. If a parent, grandparent, or sibling dies, it can be hard to explain to a young child that, although this person they love is no longer physically with them, there is still a way to connect: hug a tree and feel your loved one hugging you back, look up at the moon and see the smile of your dear one returned, kisses sliding from heaven down the rainbow. Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs strikes a delicate balance between being a cutesy read and a heartwarming story that both comforts and gives a smile to the little one reading it.Long story short, I highly recommend this book, for kids under 6, who either are dealing with a separation of some reason (long term like divorce or short term like a business trip or deployment) or for the death of someone close to them.

What a precious story to read to a child, especially when a parent or even grandparent is away. No matter where we are in the world, we have the sun, the moon, and love.I think this book would be excellent for children who have a parent(s) that are in the military and may have to deploy. As the mother of a soldier, who is also a father, this would be an excellent story."Hugs by moon and kisses by sun, I'll always love you, Little One.The story has beautiful illustrations and told with rhyming verse.
