I bought this book because I was intrigued by O'Leary's outspoken controversial style, combined with Ryanair's success under his leadership. The first 60 pages jump around with no particular pattern, then around page 60 it settles into a more traditional chronological narrative which is much easier to follow. The focus is almost entirely on O'Leary's obsession with low costs, at the expense of everything else. It's probably accurate, but the one-dimensional characterization gets a little tiresome.O'Leary famously admired Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines, but there's almost no coverage of why O'Leary dismissed Southwest's emphasis on fun and customer satisfaction to focus solely on cost, and whether this was deliberate or accidental. If the author knows anything about aircraft or the airline business, it's not apparent here: this book is really all about personalities and little else. Finally, it's clearly written for the Irish market: there are many references to Irish politics and the terminology will be lost on many non-Irish readers. It may be worth reading for a glimpse into a highly visible larger-than-life personality, but don't expect to learn much about running a successful airline.

He started The London Foodie blog in 2009 (regularly listed as one of the top 10 UK food blogs), and in 2012 launched the hugely popular London Foodie's Supper Club, serving Japanese, Nikkei and French food – every event has sold out since it started. He also teaches Japanese cookery and from January 2016 will teach Nikkei cooking at Divertimenti Cookery School in London.Luiz enjoys a high profile in the UK and beyond. He has written for Time Out London, BBC Good Food Channel and many other online publications. Great book on Nikkei Cuisine. It does a good job of explaining the history and ingredients. As a chef, it was refreshing to see recipes that can be accomplished by experienced chefs and be simplified for the home cook. Overall, great book.

I made several dishes from this book. They all came out wonderfully!

I loved this book! It has mouthwatering recipes that are easy to make at home - I loved making Luiz' Nikkei take on Japanese sashimi, especially the salmon sashimi with passion fruit and aji amarillo leche de tigre. The tuna and grapefruit marinade on a bed of palm hearts is also stunning. It's beautifully photographed, and would make a great gift for any foodie.

Luiz Hara's London Foodie Supper Club is always a sold-out affair - one of the city's culinary must-do events - and this marvelous cookbook gives a hint as to why. This is beautiful, unusual and fascinating food, and while it's gorgeously presented the recipes are clearly intended with cooking in mind, not just to be admired on the page. For pure adventure and excitement - food you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere - only Yotam Ottolenghi's books come close.

This has so many amazing recipes! I love it!

Lovely pictures and recipes.Bought a copy for a friend whose recently had a baby. A great present especially for Xmas.

Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation, by Michael Pollan

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, April 2013: Who has untangled the nature of modern America’s relationship with food more effectively than Michael Pollan? After sharing the experience of growing his own food in Second Nature, he illuminated how our appetites drive the evolution of edible plants with The Botany of Desire. Then he pondered The Omnivore’s Dilemma, weighing our precarious food chain and popularizing the pleasures of eating local; In Defense of Food and Food Rules distilled his conclusions into a manifesto and a manual. With Cooked, he closes the seed-to-table loop with a passionate exploration of the satisfying transformation of grilling, braising, baking, and fermenting--and their primal roots. Learning to cook elevated humans from lone animals into increasingly intelligent, civilized groups, and though we spend scant time doing real cooking, we’ve become obsessed with watching people cook--a paradox that points to longing for a lost experience. Through his own experiences making and enjoying food with pit masters, chefs, bakers, and “fermentos,” he retraces our path to connection with real ingredients and health for people and planet. Whether you’re sympathetic or skeptical, you can’t help but appreciate Pollan’s genius for conveying the elemental appeal of making a meal. --Mari Malcolm

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Pollan’s newest treatise on how food reaches the world’s tables delves into the history of how humankind turns raw ingredients into palatable and nutritious food. To bring some sense of order to this vast subject, he resurrects classical categories of fire, water, air, and earth. Pollan visits pit masters to learn what constitutes authentic barbecue. An Italian-trained Iranian American teaches him the subtleties of proper cooking in pots, how to coax maximum flavor from humble vegetables, herbs, meats, and water. Baking trains Pollan to watch, listen, and feel the action of living yeasts in doughs. The harnessing of fungi and molds to ferment sauerkraut and beer and produce cheeses illuminates the fine and ever-shifting boundaries between tastiness and rot and how the human palate can be trained. Four recipes accompany the text, and an extensive bibliography offers much deeper exploration. Pollan’s peerless reputation as one of America’s most compelling expositors of food and human sustainability will boost demand. --Mark Knoblauch

â€œI had a deeply unsettling moment when, after spending a couple years researching nutrition for my last book, In Defense of Food, I realized that the answer to the supposedly incredibly complicated question of what we should eat wasn’t so complicated after all, and in fact could be boiled down to just seven words:Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. This was the bottom line, and it was satisfying to have found it, a piece of hard ground deep down at the bottom of the swamp of nutrition science: seven words of plain English, no biochemistry degree required. But it was also somewhat alarming, because my publisher was expecting a few thousand words more than that. Fortunately for both of us, I realized that the story of how simple a question as what to eat had ever gotten so complicated was one worth telling, and that became the focus of that book. The focus of this book is very different. It is much less about theory, history, and science than it is about our daily lives and practice. In this short, radically pared-down book, I unpack those seven words of advice into a comprehensive set of rules, or personal policies, designed to help you eat real food in moderation and, by doing so, substantially get off the Western diet. The rules are phrased in everyday language; I deliberately avoid the vocabulary of nutrition or biochemistry, though in most cases there is scientific research to back them up.”~ Michael Pollan from Food RulesMichael Pollan is the author of a number of New York Times best-selling books on nutrition (including In Defense of Food and The Omnivore’s Dilemma). He’s a longtime New York Times contributor and Professor of Journalism at Berkeley. In 2010, Time magazine named him one of the one hundred most influential people in the world. If you’re looking for a SUPER compact, witty look at the primary rules on how to eat well, this is it. I HIGHLY recommend you pick up a copy as I think it’s the page-for-page best guide on the basic fundamentals of nutrition. It’s a fun, witty, concise guide to eating well featuring 64 food rules structured around Pollan’s seven words of wisdom:Part 1 = Eat food.Part 2 = Mostly plants.Part 3 = Not too much.I'm excited to share some of favorite Big Ideas:1. Nutrition: 2 Facts - Everyone agrees on.2. Rule #1: Eat Food - Not edible foodlike substances.3. Low-Fat - Made us fat.4. Will Your Food Rot? - Good test.5. 66% - 80% - Not too much.Let’s have fun optimizing our food rules as we eat food... not too much... mostly plants!More goodness— including PhilosophersNotes on 300+ books in our *OPTIMIZE* membership program. If you follow only half of what Micheal says to do in this book, you will live a healthy lifestyle. I lost 83 pounds after following his advice,I went from 268 to 183 in 7 months, got off all medication and my blood work was perfect.

I have been a fan of Michael Pollan's ever since I read Botany of Desire. At the time, I thought he'd never top that book but as his curiosity and passion about food, our food delivery systems, and the fundamental importance of what we eat has increased, he has just gotten better and better. If you are already a Michael Pollan fan, you appreciate his meticulous attention to detail in his research and his lucid prose. I swear, this guy could take the most complicated subject on the planet and make it accessible to his readers. In Cooked, I think he has reached a new peak in his powers of synthesis and observation.Cooked is divided into four parts, analogous to the four elements described by the ancient Greeks: Fire, Water, Air and Earth. Of these, it was the section on Earth (fermentation) that really made me sit up and take notice. He brings up so many important points about how our Western diet fails us every day, making our lifespans shorter and our health more precarious. In its way, Cooked is as important a book about health and nutrition as Diet for a Small Planet was when it first appeared in the 1970s. This book will make you think, give you tools to improve your health, and explain how cooking a meal from scratch in your own kitchen becomes an act of rebellion. So worth your time and the purchase price.

This was a short novel but I enjoyed all the little bits of information that was inside. The book’s sole purpose is to give you some guidelines for eating. The links between diet and health according to this novel is that individuals who eat a Western diet (lots of processed food, food with added sugar and fat, and lots of refined grains) will suffer from Western diseases such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardio diseases. That totally makes sense to me but I didn’t know it was known as a Western diet. The second link is that if you eat a traditional diet (a lot of different varieties here) you will not suffer from these diseases. Which basically means, no one diet is perfect but as humans we have adapted to different diets to make them work for us. The Western diet, as it stands now, is the diet which makes everyone ill. Inside this novel, there are 64 rules to live by to eat a healthy diet. These rules are explained further with a brief explanation, if needed. Some of these rules I had heard about before but about half of them were new to me. There are three parts to the novel: What to eat? What kinds of food should I eat? And How should I eat? Each of these parts have different rules to follow. I liked that these rules are, for the most part, something I could memorize on my own and therefore, I could recall when need be. There is the rule about not eating food that you cannot say, rule about eating a variety of colors, and a rule about eating at a table, these are a few of the rules I already knew. Here are a few of the rules that I really enjoyed:Avoid food products containing ingredients that no ordinary human would keep in the pantry. So, cellulose, thiamine mononitrate is not something I would have on hand, therefore this product should not be in my house.Avoid food products that contain more than 5 ingredients. Wow, that would eliminate a lot of the processed foods I have on hand.Avoid food products that contain ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce. Again cellulose, thiamine mononitrate are out and I need to start thinking simple.Cook food that has only been cooked by humans. Again, lots of preservatives, added sugar, and other interesting items are added which we don’t need.Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself. This one is a killer. I have literally cut down on the number of French fries I eat as I think this rule says it all. I’m not physically making French fries out of potatoes every time I want them, it’s too time consuming and too much work. The novel says there is nothing wrong with sweets, soda and other sweet snacks as long as you prepare them yourself. If I had to prepare potato chips, snack crackers, or cookies as much as I consume them, my consumption would really go down.Spend as much time enjoying your meal as it took to prepare it. Amen!I think this book has a lot to offer, things you might know and things that you should know. I like the short and sweet aspect of the novel, it’s not a wordy or a complex read, the author gives his readers just the facts in an easy way to think about them and how to apply them to their own lives. I’m ready to jump on board and I know it will take some time, strength and willpower to incorporate these rules but I know the benefits will be worth it.

No, the “1000 Books to Read” is an invocation of the pleasures to be had from many kinds of books—genre fiction, journalism, poetry, history, and memoir, the good and the great, the illustrious and the semi-forgotten, all summoned by Mustich’s taste. You open it at any point and jump from author to author; you follow his hints and read related works by other writers, and you find your own taste emerging, proud and strong, from Mustich’s provocations. 1,000 Books is surpassingly useful as well as good." —David Denby, staff writer at The New  Yorker and author of Great Books: My Adventures with Homer, Rousseau, Woolf, and Other Indestructible Writers of the Western World "If you’ve ever doubted that books were the greatest invention of all time, and that they carry within them our collective memories and dreams, as well as any semblance of intelligence we have as a species, pick up James Mustich’s 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die and start reading." —Ken Burns "If I were as erudite, entertaining, insightful, and articulate as James Mustich, I could come up with 1,000 reasons to get his book. But here's one: Whether you're looking for something to read for personal edification or fun, for escapism or relevance, you can survey the literary world with Mustich as an experienced, enthusiastic guide. His work is an essential resource for anyone anywhere plagued by that infernal question: What do I read next?" —Bradley Graham, co-owner of Politics and Prose Bookstore

This is a book of magnificent brilliance. I loved it. But, then, I'm one of those addicts who spent several decades awaiting Jim's monthly catalogue of literary gems for sale...to read all the descriptions and to enjoy the books that seemed destined for me to read. Well, I'm 62 now and I've got to get cracking on the 1,000 here (making good use of the handy checklist in the back, which I will photocopy because I have a deep aversion to writing within books). Oh and you will also have some quibbles...my only one so far is that I believe that More's "Utopia" deserved more than just a footnote at the end of the Erasmus entry. I am sure I will think of more (no pun intended), but that's also a great part of the fun. If you love books (and I certainly do) I guarantee that you shall love this book and treasure it and refer to it time and again. OK, so Jim convinced me to read Dostoevsky. I'll start with Notes From The Underground. Wow I have so much to look forward to thanks to Jim's book. You will too. I am adding on November 15 that I just bought two copies for birthday gifts and plan to buy a dozen more as Christmas gifts...that's how much I love this book!

The Kindle edition of the book lacks the Index of the hardcover version. This makes it practically useless, unless you want to scroll thru dozens or hundreds of pages to find an author. I found the actual contents, the essays, etc, to be as notable as other reviewers. But no Index? Gimme a break! The Kindle is also entirely black and white, unlike the very colorful print edition. It may be awkwardly large to haul around when compared to the Kindle, but there's no joy in having the Kindle edition. Get it in print form!

As if I didn't have enough trouble keeping my TBR pile under control as it is, now this book comes along and recommends even more titles?! It's not that I haven't read any of the books the author discusses, it is the sheer number of others that he offers like a bibliophile's buffet. Mustich has covered a wide range of genres, age and reading levels, time periods, and cultures. Entries range from Aristotle to Vonnegut, bedtime stories such as Goodnight Moon to horror like Dracula, and adventures like Homer's Iliad or Ender's Game. The entry for a book might include a synopsis, a brief description of the authors' life, the social climate at the time of publication, or other relevant facts. Endnotes also point out other titles by the same author, books for further information about each subject, adaptations of the work, any awards it won, and read-alikes by other authors. It's like having an "if you like that, then try this" feature on steroids.Quotes from critics or other authors underscore the sort of reactions a book inspires in its readers, although Mustich does a wonderful job of expressing his own opinions. He says this about Roald Dahl, for instance, "Standing out among his storytelling treats is Matilda, whose superheroine is heroic - and triumphant - first and foremost because she reads." Along with the written entries there are also images of authors, book covers, teaser posters for movie adaptations, historical photos, and reproductions of iconic illustrations.Booknote sidebars cover related titles, while More to Explore sections group books with similar themes (even other books about books). Back matter includes a general index of the books and authors mentioned, and "A Miscellany of Special Lists" has curated groupings of titles based on subject, style, or audience. The explanation of the book's organization explains all these features as well as letting readers know that over 3,000 authors and 6,000 additional books are mentioned besides the main entries. (So does that make it 7,000 books to read before you die?) The companion website has books indexed by chronology and genre. No matter what sort of reader you are - constant, binge, persnickety, omnivorous - you will find more useful information than you are likely to have the time to implement. I suggest investing in some highlighters or sticky tabs if you purchase a print version, or be prepared to bookmark your e-book edition like crazy. You won't want to forget any of the entries or other details that catch your interest.Highly recommended for YA and up - or as a reference for school librarians and teachers to help steer students to titles that suit their tastes.

As has been mentioned, the Kindle edition is virtually unusable, as there is no index, outside of alphabetical chapters of author's last names, leaving the reader to scroll through 30-40 books to the object of desire. A simple solution would be to put a LOCATION NUMBER FOR EACH BOOK in the list of books, so it can be searched. The book itself is superb. I will be ordering the hardcover version soon in addition to the kindle

I needed to “cleanse my palate” after binge reading a fantasy series. I decided to step as far from fantasy as possible, so I ventured into the far more complex realm of…Fact.Astrophysics, to be precise. What’d I learn?I learned the universe is much bigger than I can comprehend, and we puny humans are much less significant to the universe than we imagine.I learned I’m glad there are people who are good at Astrophysics, because I’m notMostly, I learned that Astrophysics is really (Really, REALLY) complicated. Even having Neil deGrasse Tyson spell it out for me couldn’t get topics like quantum mechanics, prolate spheroids, dark matter, or E=MC2 to be more than curiosities beyond my reach.Getting through the book was worth it just to get to the last chapter, where Neil deGrasse Tyson brings the “our universe is so big and we are so insignificant” talk to a climax with some great comparisons. For example…Did you know there are more molecules in a cup of water than there are cups of water on Earth?Of course you didn’t. Because you’re not an Astrophysicist.Instead of feeling small, however, I was left feeling part of something very, very grand. Some call it science. Some call it God. I call it both.Interested in Astrophysics but clueless about Astrophysics? This is the book for you. You’ll still be clueless, but you’ll feel okay being clueless once you get a sense for the overwhelming complexity involved in with the physics of the universe. It’s a big place.Happy Reading.

First off, I love Neil deGrasse Tyson. He's one of my idols and I aspire to be where he is. My issue with this book is that I read it directly after reading his book "Death by Black Hole"...and A LOT of the content from that book is inserted into this one...word for word. It was disappointing to say the least. I pre-ordered this book two months ago and was excited when it came. I actually do really like the size of it, but the content troubles me.I will always read his books but I don't like that there is very little original content in this one. If you already own Death by Black Hole and Origins, save your money. You already have this entire book. \3 stars because it is informative IF you've never read any of his other books.

This book is exactly what its title purports -- lessons on astrophysics for people in a hurry. Each chapter is a bite-sized look at various topics, ranging from the big bang, the discovery of invisible light, the space between the planets, all the way to the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. While astrophysics is a challenging field of study, Neil deGrasse Tyson delivers his essays in clearly written prose, with relatable examples used to highlight the most difficult concepts. The chapters on dark matter and dark energy are two of my favorites, piquing my interest to search for additional writing on these subjects. One of the best and most thought provoking chapters comes at the end: Reflections on the Cosmic Perspective. If we could all view our lives through the lens of the cosmos, we might come to the same realization the author does. "We do not simply live in this universe. The universe lives within us."

In this book you can tell that Dr. Neil Tyson put his heart and intellect into this book. I've learned more reading this book than I have in all of my science classes throughout the years altogether. I'm so happy that I purchased this book and the narration(narrated by Dr. Tyson)on my Kindle Fire because the narration just adds so much more. This book gives you the facts that are the most interesting, informative, and important, this book doesn't "dumb-down" any of the topics mentioned either. Neil Degrasse Tyson is my role model because I myself want to be an astrophysicist, or aerospace engineer, and reading this book just inspired me even more to go to college and major in one of the two when I get out of High School. I mean who isn't interested in the big questions of the universe? Please buy this book if you're at all interested in the universe and want to support Dr. Tyson too. Sorry for any grammatical mistakes I may have overlooked, this is my first written review.- Aiden A.

I have read Origins, Death By Back Hole, and Space Chronicles before this one. I feel like I have read this book before. It reads like an updated Origins. Good material, but a waste of money for me.

I was introduced to Neil DeGrasse Tyson with the video series “Cosmos” on Netflix. (They recently removed the series from Netflix - very disappointing.) I listened to him speak on some radio programs and other interviews and eventually caught wind of this book. I’m fascinated with the subject matter (I imagine everyone would be - it’s about our history, present and future). This book is easy to read, informative, and leaves me feeling more aware without being overwhelmed with information that’s beyond my knowledge base. Plus, I’m so busy that I am notorious for starting books but never really getting through them. I read this weekend morning and a few evenings. Very light and yet rich. Extremely pleased.NOTE: I was NOT paid for this review. These reviews are too often polluted with fake, paid reviews. I want to be clear that my review is NOT paid for. My review is REAL.

I was hoping that this would be a good addition to my library, but I was quite disappointed. I understand that it's meant to be a short overview, but it feels a touch too short and almost unfinished. In comparison to books by Carl Sagan, all of which I've read, this pales in comparison. Neil is not nearly as likeable, his ego shines through in a number of passages. This feels less like a chat with a friendly, intelligent friend and more like a monologue by a college professor that loves himself too much.

Loved this book. Coming from someone who started running at 56 .. I appreciated its honesty and humor! Never quit trying!

This has been so helpful in getting going in running. I'm over 60 and this has helped keep me motivated and prevented many pitfalls, like vaseline on your feet and sports bra areas of rubbing before a longer run. Thank you, Alexandra!

This book has made me laugh until I could hardly breathe and cry just as hard. I have always been the least athletic person in my family. I was the one with the best grades and the nerd, so I found excuses not to even try physically in PE at school. I told myself it just wasn't my "thing," even though I secretly envied those who were athletic and fit. I started a 5k training program a couple weeks ago, and heard myself saying inwardly, "You can't do this. You aren't physically strong enough." Being a cancer survivor and having a rare lung disease would be easy excuses for me, but they taught me that I am stronger than I thought- and now I want to be a runner. Just for me. I want to prove to myself that I can use my body to move me forward, not just be a victim and suffer its illnesses and pains. This book has given me such courage through the first two weeks of training, and I know I will reread it over and over.

I really enjoyed this book. I don't often read nonfiction except for travel writing, so that's saying something. :) I recently started jogging and I am not size 2 like most runners I see near me. It was funny to hear her thoughts on bras etc as I have the same issues. I thought this book looked fun and it really was. It's inspirational, has a few good tips, and was definitely worth reading. It left me wanting to keep going. So, if you are just curious, or a beginner runner, I'd definitely suggest it. :) It's more about her story than teaching you how to run, in case you did not realize that. Happy reading!

I like that it’s not another book on running your way to a model’s body. I like the practicality and honesty of the advice. I like the light humour and humanity of the endeavour. It is to me the the Don Quixote of running books, with a happier conclusion. I feel inspired to start running. Probably

Wonderful book! I especially loved the audio version to run to, which offered tons of smiles and motivation.

Loved the book! Is inspirational and practical!

I enjoyed the book. I felt like she described many of the experiences I have had in this journey and it was morivating. The last section of the book was more related to the injuries that happen when running which I skimmed and hopefully won't have to thoroughly read through. I enjoyed the voice of the book.
