35+ years old and still up-to-date. It is interesting to read older Economics books like "Free to Choose" to see how accurate they have been in predicting outcomes of policy. It is easy to write a book with hindsight as we often see today by "experts" blaming this or that well after the fact. Milton Freeman had incredible foresight. Not because he could predict the future but because he understood Economics so well that he could simply predict outcomes of policy based on an asymmetry of economic knowledge that very few other Economists, let alone policy-makers, have. I have read this book a couple of times over the years and enjoyed his PBS series by the same name, that first aired in 1980. Also a more up-to-date version by Swedish Historian Johan Norberg's "Free or Equal" - Free to Choose 30 years after.

Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:1- "Economic freedom is an essential requisite for political freedom. By enabling people to cooperate with one another without coercion or central direction, it reduces the area over which political power is exercised. In addition, by dispersing power, the free market provides an offset to whatever concentration of political power may arise. The combination of economic and political power in the same hands is a sure recipe for tyranny."2- "The experience of recent years--slowing growth and declining productivity--raises a doubt whether private ingenuity can continue to overcome the deadening effects of government control if we continue to grant ever more power to government, to authorize a "new class" of civil servants to spend ever larger fractions of our income supposedly on our behalf. Sooner or later--and perhaps sooner than many of us expect--an ever bigger government would destroy both the prosperity that we owe to the free market and the human freedom proclaimed so eloquently in the Declaration of Independence."3- "Prices perform three functions in organizing economic activity: first, they transmit information; second, they provide an incentive to adopt those methods of production that are least costly and thereby use available resources for the most highly valued purposes; third, they determine who gets how much of the product - the distribution of income. These three functions are closely interrelated."4- "Our society is what we make it. We can shape our institutions. Physical and human characteristics limit the alternatives available to us. But none prevents us, if we will, from building a society that relies primarily on voluntary cooperation to organize both economic and other activity, a society that preserves and expands human freedom, that keeps government in its place, keeping it our servant and not letting it become our master."5- "The ballot box produces conformity without unanimity; the marketplace, unanimity without conformity. That is why it is desirable to use the ballot box, so far as possible, only for those decisions where conformity is essential."6- "Freedom cannot be absolute. We do live in an interdependent society. Some restrictions on our freedom are necessary to avoid other, still worse, restrictions. However, we have gone far beyond that point. The urgent need today is to eliminate restrictions, not add to them."7- "In one respect the System has remained completely consistent throughout. It blames all problems on external influences beyond its control and takes credit for any and all favorable occurrences. It thereby continues to promote the myth that the private economy is unstable, while its behavior continues to document the reality that government is today the major source of economic instability."8- "The waste is distressing, but it is the least of the evils of the paternalistic programs that have grown to such massive size. Their major evil is their effect on the fabric of our society. They weaken the family; reduce the incentive to work, save, and innovate; reduce the accumulation of capital; and limit our freedom. . These are the fundamental standards by which they should be judged."9- "A society that puts equality--in the sense of equality of outcome--ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality nor freedom. The use of force to achieve equality will destroy freedom, and the force, introduced for good purposes, will end up in the hands of people who use it to promote their own interests...Freedom means diversity but also mobility. It preserves the opportunity for today's disadvantaged to become tomorrow's privileged and, in the process. enables almost everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a fuller and richer life."10- "We believe that the growing role that government has played in financing and administering schooling has led not only to enormous waste of taxpayers' money but also to a far poorer educational system than would have developed had voluntary cooperation continued to play a larger role...We have tried in this chapter to outline a number of constructive suggestions...These proposals are visionary but they are not impracticable...We shall not achieve them at once. But insofar as we make progress toward them--or alternative programs directed at the same objective--we can strengthen the foundations of our freedom and give fuller meaning to equality of educational opportunity."11- "Insofar as the government has information not generally available about the merits or demerits of the items we ingest or the activities we engage in, let it give us the information. But let it leave us free to choose what chances we want to take with our own lives."12- "When unions get higher wages for their members by restricting entry into an occupation, those higher wages are at the expense of other workers who find their opportunities reduced. When government pays its employees higher wages, those higher wages are at the expense of the taxpayer. But when workers get higher wages and better working conditions through the free market, when they get raises by firms competing with one another for the best workers, by workers competing with one another for the best jobs, those higher wages are at nobody's expense. They can only come from higher productivity, greater capital investment, more widely diffused skills."13- "Five simple truths embody most of what we know about inflation: 1. Inflation is a monetary phenomenon arising from a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than in output (though, of course, the reasons for the increase in money may be various) 2. In today's world government determines--or can determine -the quantity of money. 3. There is only one cure for inflation: a slower rate of increase in the quantity of money. 4. It takes time--measured in years, not months--for inflation to develop; it takes time for inflation to be cured. 5. Unpleasant side effects of the cure are unavoidable."14- "We have been misled by a false dichotomy: inflation or unemployment. That option is an illusion. The real option is only whether we have higher unemployment as a result of higher inflation or as a temporary side effect of curing inflation."15- "The two ideas of human freedom and economic freedom working together came to their greatest fruition in the United States. Those ideas are still very much with us. We are all of us imbued with them. They are part of the very fabric of our being. But we have been straying from them. We have been forgetting the basic h that the greatest threat to human freedom is the concentration of power, whether in the hands of government or anyone else. We have persuaded ourselves that it is safe to grant power, provided it is for good purposes."

This book should be required reading in order to graduate from high school. Friedman cogently and clearly articulates why free-market capitalism has and will continue to do more for all humans than any other substitute economic program. While socialism has always led to a reduction in liberty and a squelching of innovation, free-markets allow individuals to produce and consume according to their own wants and needs. Besides providing competition that always drives down costs and improves quality, free-markets mean individuals, not the nanny state decide how they will live their lives.

This book presents a clear, thoughtful, and rational argument for maximizing free choice within the limits largely set by John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty" (that is, one may not use his or her liberty to harm another).Friedman sets out a strong case that when people are left to pursue their own interests, the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts, and the commonwealth benefits more than when central planners try to orchestrate economies. That should be obvious now that nations like China and Vietnam, while retaining political repression, have given wide scope to free markets and thereby lifted millions out of poverty. Contrast that with Cuba or Venezuela, where central economic planning prevails, and the people are largely destitute.The book's argument is often attacked as an appeal to "greed," which is unfortunate as "self-interest" is not necessarily greed. I think mostly of one of my leftist friends in this regard who assails capitalism and whatnot, but who, due to his comfortable job in a government bureau, is able to pursue an acting and singing career after hours. Is he not, there, pursuing his self interest? And doesn't the larger public benefit from his ability to deploy his talents? I along with many have enjoyed many of his performances, and will continue to. It's just Friedman's thesis at work: we all benefit when everyone seeks his own interest.The book is often attacked as being anarchistic (or something like that) -- that is, that "limited government" or "less regulation" means "no government or "no regulation." Quite to the contrary, Friedman argues for a very clear and specific role for government in regulating natural monopolies, enforcing contracts, and taking many other actions to make sure that markets function openly. He clearly embraces regulation with the stipulation that when employed the benefits exceed the costs. And there's the rub with many government programs (say, agriculture subsidies): they favor entrenched interests rather than the commonwealth.His arguments about free trade convince me that it is the best way to help the poor in the world. I've read that the annual subsidy for one cow in Belgium rivals the annual salary of an African subsistence farmer. Take down that trade barrier benefiting the rich Belgian cow owner, and that farmer suddenly has a chance to present his goods on a world market. My point is, if you care about the poor, and if you care about social justice and all that, this might just be a crazy (and, for a change, effective) way to go.I don't fully agree with some of the book's policy prescriptions regarding environmental, education or monetary policy, but I suggest that Friedman's thoughts, formulated in the 1970s and published first in 1980, are far more likely to be successful than current ideas like "common core" or "quantitative easing."Overall, this is a thought-provoking read no matter what your political stripe is. Lovely memoir, but bittersweet, I had no idea this wonderful & intellectual man past away last yr, so sad. I read some of his books back in college in the 90's & loved his approach to his scientific & medical observations, which were very funny & easy to imagine. This memoir is really just glimpses of this guy's life, given how much he wrote daily until his death, so the fact this book read so well under 400pgs is quite a feat. It could of been easily a 1,000. The amazing ppl he has encountered in his lifetime - Stephen J. Gould, Auden, DNA Crick!, gosh, I would love to have been to one their lectures, or just sitting at a table eavesdropping, w/ all these highly intellectual ppl. I would say the only real, technical chapter in the book was the 2nd to last, A New Vision of the Mind, but the rest, entertaining. I was hoping he spoke about his belief in God, given his parents were religious Jews, just more philosophical notions. Also, why he never got a laptop, since he loves to write. I wanted his thoughts on current events, like what he thought about the Internet, it doesn't seem he had a cell phone. I was surprised that the he didn't relish the modern computer era, given how the computer is like a big brain. I thought he would talk about some other issues, besides all scientific ones, like Stephen Hawk does. But oh well, overall I love this memoir, even the sexy pic for the front cover.

I fell in love with Oliver Sacks and his writing after my parents gave me "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" this past Christmas. Ever since, I've been hooked and can't get enough. I've now read "Hat", "Hallucinations," " Musicophilia," and now his autobiography. His writing is so elegant yet lucid, that it feels as though I'm reading fiction at times. This new book of his is no different, and may perhaps be the most fascinating of them all.To say that he has lived life to the fullest would be a severe understatement; he has filled his life with enough adventure and excitement to occupy four lifetimes, and he is still going (and may he continue to do so for many years, in spite of his cancer). His openness and honesty in "On the Move" is spectacular, moving, and one feels as though he is having a fireside conversation with Sacks himself. There is so much I never knew about him, so much that I almost found hard to believe! (You'll understand this as you read through the book). What a man, what a life!As a student who will be starting his first year at medical school this August, I can say that I aspire to be half the man that Oliver Sacks has become. He is part of the reason that I have fallen even more in love with the medical field, particularly neurology and psychiatry. There is much to learn from this book, regardless of one's profession, interests, and background. There is so much more to say, but I'm no wordsmith as Sacks is, so I'll let you read it for yourself. You would not have guessed from reading his books about neurology that he was a biker and weight lifter in his wild younger years, and also an experimenter (on himself) with drugs. He has described his shyness and a sense of a barrier between himself and others. But his autobiography is uncommonly open and self revealing. His writing made him famous and On the Move recounts his friendships with other famous people (Francis Crick, Robin Williams, etc). It is not stated in these books, but I would guess his friends and acquaintances found Dr. Sacks quite interesting and original. I gave this book five stars because it presents a new and interesting way to explain how our genome functions. In the authors' views, genes are selfish--a Dawkins perspective--but in a holistic context; they seldom operate in isolation, but work cooperatively and competitively between and among themselves.Yanai and Lercher invoke a wonderful comparison between gene organization and operation with the economic notion of Adam Smith whereby it is the self-interested competitive and cooperative interaction of individuals that make the marketplace efficient and resilient. In like manner, it is the competitive and cooperative behavior among genes striving for their own survival that promotes the greater good of the genome society as a whole. The authors go on to make their case and they do it well. Their use of metaphors, simile, and analogy are well executed and helps the lay reader understand what is being proposed. As an economist, I got their analogy regarding the society of genes and the operation of the marketplace.This is a well written book which should be read by anyone interested in the subject...it has a refreshingly different perspective on genes and epigenetics. The reader will learn a lot about who we are and how we function.Rich

The Society of Genes is a fascinating look at the basic building blocks of all living creatures. Itai Yanai and Martin Lercher make the unique argument that genes live in cooperative societies that work together to keep the vehicle that ensures their survival alive so that they would make it to the next generation. The authors cover the nature of genes, their possible origin their defense against the many forms of danger that cells are subject to, the reproduction of genes as well as the thousands of what appear to be useless genes that travel along with the society of genes as freeloaders. The authors make it sound like genes have a life of their own and we as well as all living creatures just happen to be the fortunate vessels for their journey. I loved the book and found it difficult to put aside. The only difficulty I had was the disappointing end to the argument when they implied that we have the ability to fight against the our natures as determined by genes. They say this after having elegantly stated , “Successful management in the society of genes is not based on intelligence or intentions.” The management of proteins is solely a consequence of their molecular affinities: due to their shape and electrical charge. I was a little disappointed they did not make it clear which position they supported. Either we are subject to the laws of our physical structures or “we” have control over them. But don’t let my qualms keep you from reading this well thought out coverage of a fascinating topic; the society of genes.

I must admit I am from the field, however I often read general books like this one in order to understand how to convey complex scientific ideas to the general reader. I read most of the book over the weekend. I think it iswritten very well. It has very clear examples. It is thought provoking. Some ideas are renewed, others are novel. I truly believe it reaches a niche of clever readers who are not biology savvy.

This is an extremely interesting primer (and then some) on the nascent field of the systems biology of living systems, at least for those who are willing to write down a large number of new terms for future reference (a glossary would have been helpful). The thesis is that it is a huge society of genes within every living organism that is selfishly devoted to propating itself to future generations, not the individual gene of Peter Dawkins’ “The Selfish Gene”. The question of why remains unanswered.We learn a lot about the details of evolution, mutations, regulation of cell growth, and the cellular details of natural selection. The gene is a coherent pattern of molecules containing the information about how to make large molecules call proteins, which perform most of the functions carried out in the cell.We also learn, surprisingly, that the process is grossly inefficient. The human genome consists of 20,000 genes, and there are 1.5 billion copies of the human genome in the human body, not all containing the same genes. Only about one-third of all genes in the human genome are productively employed in the success of the human organism, while the other two-thirds are basically free loaders that trick the productive genes into carrying them along into the next generation, and the next… One is tempted to make some connection between this behavior of our genes and our own behavior as members of society.With the advent of rapid genome mapping, one can provide a genetic answer to the old question of how different are “we” and “them”. It seems that any two people on the planet are 99.9% the same in terms of their genomes, which translates into 6 million different letters out of a total 6 billion letters in the human genome, but that only about 15% of this 0.1% difference distinguishes different populations from different parts of the world. There is much more genetic variation among different populations within Africa than between European or Asian populations, which left Africa 50,000 years ago, and the present African population in the region from which they are believed to have migrated. The main difference between chimpanzees and humans is that chimps have 24 chromosomes (the famous double helix of DNA strands) and humans have 23, so that 2 of the chromosones in the common ancestor must have fused together at some time during human evolution. The genomes of chimps and humans differ by about 4%. I don’t even want to get into the oyster and fruit fly.

This book is wonderful! I found it completely accessible, and enthralling. Itai Yanai and Martin Lercher's research is insightful and may very well lead the way in a field that is ever more prevalent. I would recommend this book as a must read, in particular for anyone eager to know about the mysterious world of genetics and it's most current direction. It's clear, concise, and thought-provoking, with just the right balance of science and humanity.

For a few years now we have been looking for a Bible for our Mother who enjoyed reading it just before she retires for the night. When I found this one, I purchased it and sent it to her. She is now 89 yrs old and living with our brother. This is because of a few reasons, one is the continual losing of her vision, another is because of the lost of hearing in the left ear which is throwing her balance off. Since she has moved in with our bother she had a stroke and now is unable to sit and actually read the Bible. We looked in to getting the entire Bible on cd but most of them were with a lot of background noises like music or people talking which was very confusing for her. Getting this Bible by Johnny was a God sent as now for the first time she was able to hear the New Testament and loved listening to it. She always loved the King James Version of the Bible but as she got older the language was difficult for her to understand but now she really enjoys the text and is beginning to understand it again. This is a wonderful find.

This cd is so understandably clear, it makes the Bible interesting. Johnny Cash's voice is a rich deep tone almost as if it is the voice of God Himself. There is no music to distract you from "The Word." The cd keeps moving along so if you want to think about what you heard, I suggest you stop your player and read the word again for yourself at your speed. If you want to have fun while lifting your spirit, I suggest Cash's musical cd, "Just As I Am." I personally listen to the New Testament in bed just before going to sleep and rest in peace. In the morning, if I have anything to review, I read it in my Bible and when I go out walking I listen to the music cd to exercise both my body and soul. With very little effort, you have much to gain.

I bought this for a friend. She is a 91 year old near blind lady. Her hearing is also fading. She said that this is the only audio Bible that she has heard that does not have background music. This, coupled with the outstanding distinctive voice of Johnny Cash made this not only very clear and understandable, but very enjoyable as well. However, I did have to make some adjustments to the album so that she could navigate through the 16 disks. The album comes in 2 folders, each containing 8 disks. Each folder opens up into 4 panels, each containing 2 disks. That is, 1 at the top of each panel & 1 on the bottom of each panel. I placed a piece of tape on the upper part of the spine on the first album. This made it so (by feel) that she could easily identify the first part of the Bible from the second part of the Bible. Then I placed a piece of tape on the upper part of the first panel so that she could, again by feel, know where the first disk was. Then, I the put a piece of tape on the upper right hand corner of the face of the second album. This not only let her know that this was the second album, but also which way is up ^ and where to begin to open the album. Then, as I had done with the first album, I put a piece of tape on the upper part of the first panel so that she could, again by feel, know where the first disk (of the second album) was. She listened to the entire New Testament within the first two weeks. She has enjoyed it so much that she is now midway through listening to it a second time. Beyond all of that, her friends are delighted to hear how enthusiastically she speaks of it.

This is a great audio Bible. No distractions, just the Word of God being read aloud. I find it odd to have a Bible that is covered with pictures of Johnny Cash - I got it because I wanted an audio Bible that was not dramatized and did not have music. All the other voices I previewed sounded really annoying to my ears. Johnny Cash had an excellent reading voice and is easy to listen to.

I wouldn’t listen to the New Testiment by anyone else. Johnny Cash does a great kob. My wife and i thoroughly enjoy it.

Johnny Cash was not only a great singer and entertainer, he was a true American and a believer in Jesus Christ. His reading of the New Testament is so rich and full of the "Glory of God" through the spirit of this man. I listen to it often, and recommend this recording to anyone who loves God's Word.I have heard many other "readings" of the Gospel, but this is by far the best!

I bought this on CD (new) and cassette (pre-owned - for my truck) the same day. I haven't gotten past the gospels yet. My favorite so far is Matthew 7. I cannot convey the beauty of his voice on both copies. He was at the height of his vocal power. His pace is comfortable. Country. I don't hear any recording issues, but I'm no expert. Have you heard Johnny Cash sing with just his own guitar for backup? Imagine the guitar has stopped. Now imagine he is speaking the lyrics, as he did on Boy Named Sue. The New Testament - Johnny Cash - acappella. Beautiful. I'd do it again.

I thought I was buying the King James Version and disappointed in that it wasn't but other than that it is great. What I've enjoyed most is he feels and respects what he is reading - he is not reading it like it is just an ordinary book.

What a beautiful book on rescue animals having their lives turned around when they were in need! Being trained to help humans in dire situations or devastating crises circumstances is amazing and gratifying. It also tells of the sadder side of stories where death is involved but resolution is solved by finding the bodies in huge numbered tragedies!

Author fought bureaucracy to accomplish her goal of training and providing cream of the crop search and rescue dogs for disaster situations. Very heartwarming.

Hero Dogs was hard to put down. I’m a dog lover and trainer and reading the story of these rescued and rejected dogs that turned into disaster search partners was enlightening, exciting, and heart wrenching. Some of these dogs had such a rough start to their lives. It was wonderful reading how their training evolved along with partnering and learning how to be a search and rescue team.The story is told from Wilma’s perspective and gives us the beginning of her partnership with her own dog, Murphy and the frustration she felt from other SAR handlers and SAR organizations. After working the Oklahoma City bombing, she ultimately vows to train 168 dog and handler teams for each victim. She decides to use rescue dogs for her program. The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, SDF, was then created.I loved the stories of the different dogs and their individual personalities and quirks. The pairing of the dogs with their human partners was unique and very appropriate. Wilma doesn’t sugar coat the trials of training these dogs and handlers. She also doesn’t let us think that every dog was perfect for disaster search. Some didn’t make the cut, but ended up in a working environment that fit their specific skills. A promise she made at the beginning was that none of these dogs would ever see a shelter again even if they couldn’t become a part of the program. Along the way, she meets and becomes friends with many people that she freely acknowledges as being a part of the whole and not just one person’s goal. It took many people and dogs to get the SDF where it is today. The search and rescue community is definitely better for having her work so hard to have her dream become a reality. Disaster victims couldn’t want a better team on their side than the SDF dog and handler teams.It was hard to put this book down. It flowed very easily from page to page. If you know nothing, or very little about search and rescue this book will be interesting. If you have knowledge of SAR, you’ll enjoy reading about the dogs, training and handlers. I enjoyed reading this and would highly recommend it. I received a free e-copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Excellent reference on writing, debugging, and maintaining multithreaded code in Windows.In my day job, I have to maintain and extend a heavily multithreaded service used with a fingerprint sensor. The original authors didn't quite have a handle on C++ or multithreading, and we've had a number of difficult bugs to track down and fix. This book, despite its age, is an excellent reference on multithreading in Windows, and I agree with some other reviewers that it should be mandatory reading for anyone working on multithreaded code.For those like me who got a copy of this book without the CD, here's how to get it, courtesy of the author:You can get the source code as follows:- Go to [...]- Click on the Downloads tab- Click on the words "CD Contents"

I bought this book in 2005. This is a good book for beginners. I would expect more advanced topics and more complex multithreading techniques.

A beginners guide to multi-threading on WIN32. Experienced developers might find it useful to quickly skim through this book to see if there is anything that they didn't already know, but for the most part anyone with significant experience should find a different book.The language used in the book is very easy to read, making life easy for newcomers to threading, but possibly woolly enough to be slightly dangerous too, in that some stuff could bits could be misinterpreted. Developing example code using incorrect practices and then slowly fixing the problems is informative, but possibly not the best way of doing things. Why not just go for the right way first and then point out the errors that could have been made? That way it is safe for people to dip into the book and use code as is, rather than having to trawl through for a correct version. Talking about using code from books - do the authors expect the reader to trust their code when they include comments like "This happens occasionally instead of end-of-file. Not sure why" ? Certainly, that means that I would code-review anything I lifted from this book very carefully. More likely, it means that I won't lift anything from this book and will use Jeffrey Richter or Richard Gerber/Andrew Binstock instead.The book does cover a large range of Windows-related multi-threading topics - from file handling, GUI handling etc through implications for DLLs. It touches on Sockets but only very briefly, which was disappointing. Also particularly disappointing were the chapters on debugging and inter-process communications. There are too many books around that say that testing/debugging multi-threaded code is difficult without coming up with good strategies for overcoming the difficulties. Unit testing, logging and the debugger are useful, but obvious. "you must start making predictions (otherwise known as guesses)" (p268) is certainly an approach, but perhaps the time has come to use an engineering approach?The material could do with updating, as Windows, C++ and development techniques have all moved on since this book was published. Experienced developers should look forward to Jeffrey Richter's new book, planned for end of 2007, which should be as up to date as it comes.Despite referring to the CD-ROM the book didn't actually come with one. Instead the source had to be downloaded from the Addison Wesley web-site. Strangely, Addison Wesley do not have an errata for this book on their web-site. Normally I'm a big Addison Wesley fan, but they have done a few silly things with this book. The very first page of the preface had me concerned, when they hyphenated _beginthread to be _begin-thread. Given that this book is aimed at beginners I would be pretty sure that someone, somewhere tried typing that into their computer complete with the hyphen.

It does a very good job at describing the Win32 API for multithreading but the applications of multithreading assumed is strictly I/O related (Networking,printing,writing/reading files). The set of techniques for parallel processing on the same data is completely absent such as data organization in memory to optimize its parallel access. This is probably due to the age of the book as when it has been written, single core processor system was the norm. Parallel processing will become very important with the growing popularity of the multi core systems. Despite this weakness, this book is still my best recommendation for learning multithreaded programming on Windows since, to my knowledge, there is not yet any book tackling the subject of parallel processing on a Windows/x86 platform.

It is a good book on Windows multithreading. Synchronization, overlapped files, C++ multithreading, and MFC multithreading are clearly explained. You will find this book very good for you if you are a beginner in multithreading. However, it is clear that you should buy other book like Butenhof's book. You need other book because the reviewed one has funny things in it when it explains about the real application of multithreading programs. Can you imagine a multithreading book discourage its readers to write a multithreading application ? For example, he explained that it was difficult to write a multithreading book because maybe the existing library you have bought from other vendors might not be thread-safe..., so what you should do? This book does not give the answer
