Review

David Cay Johnston, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Trump biographer, and author of It's Even Worse Than You Think:What the Trump Administration is Doing to America"Faking the News brilliantly and simply explains how Trump weaponizes language, diverting attention from issues to stir emotions like anger and resentment. These ten chapters will enable you to understand what makes his rhetoric, simplistic as it is, so effective in rousing supporters."ENDORSEMENT BY- Pamela Keith, attorney, former Judge Advocate for the United States Navy, and Democratic candidate for U.S. Representative of the 18th Congressional District of Florida"As a student of Rhetoric, and a candidate for political office, I have heard and seen many attempts to analyze how Donald Trump was able to convince so many people of things that were either fundamentally untrue or functionally impossible. This book digs deeper and gets it right. The Trump phenomenon is not merely about a person, but a political environment, nurtured over many years and exploited by savvy operatives able to fuel the rhetoric of personal grievance. It also aptly addresses the more.ENDORSEMENT BY- Rick Wilson, is a Republican political strategist, writer, and media consultant. He is a regular contributor to CNN, MSNBC, and FOX, and he is a columnist for The Daily Beast and The Washington Post."Faking the News is a valuable addition to the growing field of analysis of both Trump's conscious and intuitive use of rhetoric, propaganda, and branding in America's profoundly disrupted politics. These essays are full of revelatory 'So that's why he does that!' moments, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Trump's language and his dark but brilliant manipulation of the American body politic."

Just finished reading but *not* by any means finished THINKING about this well assembled collection of essays. This is not a collection of diatribes or rants but, rather, of well considered analyses of rhetorical practice in the Age of Trump written by scholars of the field. Nor is it a ‘jargony’ text written by scholars for scholars; it is written to be read by anyone motivated to understand the current discursive landscape of American politics. As I have told my friends: buy a copy and READ it!! It is worth the time (and a little money) spent.

Great read. Beyond the great cover and concept, the book provides a series of insights into the rhetoric coming out of today’s White House. Love him or hate him, Trump’s use of language and the media is unlike anything we’ve ever seen, and lessons can be learned from examining the language that delivers his often changing messages.

Excellent, timely, clear, and accessible. These essays break down Trump's rhetoric, explaining how and why it works, and pointing to its potential and limitations. The whole collection is great, but Michael J. Steudeman's and Ryan Skinnell's chapter stand out. I'll definitely be recommending this to colleagues and using it in my writing & rhetoric courses.

This book is really helpful for understanding why people like Trump and think he's doing a good job.

Faking the News contains a series of insightful and accessible chapters on the rhetorical practices of Trump. Each contributor sheds light on the nuanced versions of truth coming out of the Trump White House. A great but frustrating read.

Dr. Ryan Skinnell never ceases to amaze me! The perspicacious professor pellucidly and perspicuously writes about #45 and the means of persuasion, which he uses/used to advance his agenda. Skinnell's book is the quintessence of rhetorical excellence!!!

A thoughtful guide to navigating the Trump era with language and logic. Timely and persuasive.

Good book. Explains how persuasion works in clear prose.

I admire Dave Asprey’s journey as a writer—starting with The Bulletproof Diet, then Head Strong, and now shifting gears towards a more holistic piece, Game Changers. I've just finished reading it and, in fact, was my favorite one. That’s why I am happy to share some thoughts before you commit to the book itself. It's written in a more conversational tone—taking a closer look at life purpose, happiness, and spirituality. He by no means forgets to include worthwhile advices on physical and mental performances. Simply put, the book is a compilation of powerful recommendations he distilled from over 450 conversations/interviews with accomplished guests. This is quite an intimate book, representing essential values Asprey has assimilated throughout his experiences. Although I haven’t listened to more than 100 of his interviews, I could feel that the present book was carefully written—he took the time and energy to document something precious.Asprey divides the book into 3 main parts—smarter, faster, happier—where each part is broken down into chapters filled with a total of 46 “laws”. One of the highlights is that at the end of each “law” we find a honest/feasible action plan to implement the advice, as well as recommended readings and podcast episodes for further research. Before sharing thoughts about the content itself, I just wanted to mention I could draw a direct comparison between Tim Ferris’s Tools of Titans and Game Changers. They both compiled hundreds of interviews into a book, and even though Tim Ferris and Dave Asprey have similar interests such as high-performance, health, business, spiritualism, science, happiness, and self-improvement, there are differences on how the information is laid out throughout the chapters. Ferris summarizes key takeaways from each interviewee, one-by-one. Asprey, however, distills the information in a broader and more interconnected perspective after running his “statistical analysis”. That said, Tools of Titans and Game Changers complement each other positively. Now let me share with you some pieces of advice I took note to further reflect and explore as I get the chance to read the book again—but on a slower pace next. The “laws” are in order of appearance.[Law 1] To focus on what matters most by saying “no” more often. Knowing what matters the most brings clarity, making it easy to take decisions and focus our attention and energy exclusively. As a regression, I could connect this “law” with another valuable book called “Essentialism” by Greg McKeown.[Law 3] Words are powerful. We should be mindful by choosing truthful words to build trust and break free from our own limitations. Asprey explains how certain words can be detrimental to us. He suggests us to pay attention to often used words that make us weak—sharing also techniques to avoid them.[Law 8] Asprey encourages us to access altered states by taking advantage of valuable tools we have these days, ranging from silent meditation retreats all the way to trusted ayahuasca experiences in the Amazon.[Law 10] We must learn to confront our irrational fear of criticism and failure. Negative emotions are rooted in fear, while positive ones are rooted in trust. When we manage to spend more time in the positive states, a sense of comfort surrounds us. Asprey shares tips on how to dissolve expectations and attachments that may be holding us back.[Law 12] Passion and purpose are key to happiness. Finding the things we care about and devote time and energy will certainly pay off in the long run. As Asprey puts: “Every idea that doesn’t work is simply a stepping-stone to a bigger success. Success comes when you are still curious and still learning.”[Law 20] Striving for quality sleep is better than more sleep. Fascinating studies are presented to help us sleep thoroughly. I enjoyed reading about wild animals patterns, that they prefer sleeping on the hard ground with their heads slightly uphill. It seems that maintaining our heads slightly above our hearts while sleeping may be a good idea to avoid the increase of pressure in the brain due to the blood flow circulation under the effects of gravity. Reading about sleep made me think about an important and personally favorite book called “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker.[Law 22] Learning to move our bodies the right way is a must for long-term health. I sincerely appreciate this point because we often forget to prioritize this aspect due to high demands we face at work. Going back to the basics and getting the right posture and movement patterns will certainly improve the quality of our lives. Asprey shares good recommendations and I’ve used some of them—after listening to his podcasts—in tandem with my favorite one. GMB [www.gmb.io] is formed by a small but knowledgeable group of experts in physical therapy, gymnastics, martial arts, and human movement that have been developing courses and tutorials to help us move with more autonomy. Both of GMB’s training programs, the Elements and the Vitamin, have helped me immensely with rock climbing performance. Another program that seems to be terrific but I haven’t engaged as much is MovNat [www.movnat.com].[Law 25] This is a profound topic on meaningful food consumption. I was touched by Cynthia Garcia’s story on how she overcame her struggles through a combination of dietary changes with psychological and spiritual work. The message here is that emotional eating is sadly entrenched in our culture that we aren’t aware of the effects. We learn tips that signal excess of emotional eating.[Law 26] Here we find the solution to the previous “law”—which is about eating real food, about paying attention to what our relatives at generations ago used to eat, about eating genuinely according to our true nature and needs. This topic stands alone as a concise diet guide.[Law 33] Striving for happier habits improves our creativity, productivity, relationships, and even the odds to earn more money. But besides that, one of his interviewees, Vishen Lakhiani, got my attention. He says we should focus on “end goals” described as: [1] the things we want to experience in life, [2] ways in which we want to grow a as human being, and [3] ways in which we want to contribute to the world.[Law 35] Seeking out social interaction through a supportive community brings positive impacts in many aspects. Dr. Zak explains the role of oxytocin, a hormone released during social bounding. It’s intriguing to know how this hormone works—on a feedback loop—amplifying empathy throughout human connections.[Law 39] Here we learn about the importance of proper breathing. Wim Hof is a pioneer of extremely cold temperature exposure through breathing techniques. Even though I've taken cold showers 2 times a week since 2016 and learned to prefer lukewarm showers over hot ones on the other days, I've been delaying to test Hof's exercises since I first heard about his breathing techniques.[Law 41] One of my favorite excerpts of the book is as follows: “Spend more time outdoors. See trees. Smell plants. Taste real food. Sweat in the sun. Shiver when it’s cold. Give your nervous system a taste of the environment it evolved in so you can reap the returns as your biology changes to increase your performance.”[Law 45] The power of forgiveness can’t be beat. Asprey encourages us to forgive with the same intensity we bring our mission in life in order to access new levels of energy and happiness. This “law” was probably my favorite one—insights that I hope to carry for life.I hope this review helps you. Even if you have listened to most of Asprey's interviews, this book is a convenient piece to revisit the information in a well-documented version. Game Changers has the potential to impact our lives positively in many forms. After all, it’s about taking the time to discover our own priorities, then finding the right action plan at the end of each “law” to create better habits or boost our performances over time.Take good care,Haical

This book advocates the responsible use of pyschotropic drugs to bring enlightenment and a higher functioning brain. While I totally agree with everyone’s right to any and all nootropics or just plain recreational drugs, I don’t believe it’s responsible advocate it as a method for life hacking. Personally, I want to know how to live my best life in my current reality not create an alter-reality to live in within myself. I find it HIGHLY irresponsible. You can’t microdose LSD any more than you can eat one Lay’s potato chip. Even if you could, that’s not living our current reality at its fullest potential but rather just creating an altered reality. That’s not what I wanted from this book. If that’s what you’re looking for then by all means, dive in. I find that one of the biggest problem’s we are facing that is causing an epidemic of depression, anxiety, loss of focus is exactly that, people have a desire to escape rather than connect. I get it. Connecting is hard and a microdose of LSD would probably make us feel like it was easier. I prefer my hacking to involve more grounded methods, which he did offer a few but you can tell from his writing what he really subscribes to the most.I will skim the rest of the book but it is not organized in a manner to quickly grasp points. The chapter layouts are odd. There is a summary for sections, if you can find them. I’m returning it and asking for my money back. I will likely stop buying his over-priced products as well. He’s just not my kind of guru anymore.

I preordered this book in September, and was able to read ALL of it today :). I had the opportunity to meet Dave Asprey in Chicago for a biohacker meet-up, and this man definitely practices what he preaches. He was one of the nicest, most genuine guys I’ve met. He truly cares about helping others live their best life. The information in this book is priceless, and is a must read for anyone wanting to make their life more kick ass!I became a fan after reading the Bulletproof Diet. I suffered a spinal cord injury from a back surgery, and his information has helped me manage the effects of that surgery to the point I no longer take medication, and I feel better than I ever have — minus the partial paralysis lol.You won’t regret buying this book...

This book absolutely changed my mindset. It condenses the best advice from tons of experts. When you see all the recommended books you realize that what you’re getting in one book is really the summary of 20+ other books, saving you tons of time. I read it on the kindle. It does ask you to write stuff down which you can’t do on the kindle. So if that bothers you then I would get a physical copy of the book.

Awesome book. I’ve been listening to Dave asprey podcast for years dude is a beast. I’ve also read his book head strong and the bulletproof diet. Two good books. This book is so good on so many levels. It breaks down the everyday routines of people. What they do. What they eat. How much they value sleep and recovery time. I listen to Dave religiously and I’ve applied a lot of his diet and brain hacks with remarkable results. I highly recommend this book to anyone. I left so much from mediation to yoga to mentors. It’s well written book also. Dave is becoming quite the writer and it laid out good to.

As a longtime fan of Dave Asprey and listener to the Bulletproof Radio podcast I cannot recommend this book enough! It eloquently and concisely compiles key lessons from the entirety of the BP Radio catalog into easily retained and understood laws to live by whether you are struggling with sleep, focus, relationships, diet, memory, weight-loss, business, love or sex, its all here and is told from a place of deep gratitude, the thing I appreciate most about Mr Asprey and the content he produces, see what I did there?

Very interesting and at times amusing. He takes biohacking to the 10th degree. I was happy I got it with audible made for easier reading. He got so many people to offer ideas, I really enjoyed it

At the beginning of this year, I gave them several different books to choose from and they decided on Keeper of the Light. I was a little reticent to dive into this book because of the one very negative review and, out of caution, chose to order a copy for myself to preview first. I felt very comfortable letting them read it because, having read Father Arseny last year, the kids wanted something a little easier to read. Additionally, we have talked repeatedly about the humanity of our blessed Saints and how their imperfections give us hope that we might all have a chance to grow and emulate them in our own lives. Before reading this book, I read the negative review to the group out loud and asked them to reflect on their thoughts. They echoed the sentiment that Saints are people- win! Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, and I do not wish to criticize the other reviewer, just to bring to this forum the perspective of my group of little "Saints in progress." Below are their reviews of this book in their own words. I also asked each of them to reflect on one overall "takeaway" from the book. Enjoy...Ginny Seeley, Four Evangelists Youth Group Leader(1) Matt's Review (14 Year old boy from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"Keeper of the Light was a great book. I am not a big book reader but I could not put this book down. It made me understand how lucky I am to be in a place where I would not get in trouble for my religion. I would rate this book a 9 out of 10. The lesson that I took away from this book is to be patient."(2) Connor's Review (15 Year old boy from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"After reading this book in my Youth Group, I feel that the simple language is great for kids and the book does not go into gruesome detail. It does a good job talking about a Saint, while also maintaining their humanity. Saints are people and make mistakes and have bad days. The book describes these traits well and, while it could go into more detail during saintly parts, it is easy to understand. The lesson I took away from this book is that God never lies."(3) Logan's Review (13 Year old Girl from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"I read this book in my Church Youth Group. After reading the very negative review, I wasn't eager to read this book. However, if you let that review influence your decision to read this book, you've made a mistake. This was an amazing book. It didn't paint St. Macrina as evil, rather as human. She was a saint because she was good, despite challenges. If it was easy, then we would all be saints. Overall, I loved the book. The lesson I took away from this book was that you should always trust in God."(4) Teddy's Review (13 Year old boy from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"I think that St. Macrina was a great book. The author wrote the book well and made up all the unknown parts of her life in a good way. She accurately depicts the saint and shows God's love through her in a simple way. This book can be read by anyone and it talks about a relatively unknown person. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read it and I'll be other readers will like it, too. The lesson I took away from this book is that God is always with you."(5) Addy's Review (11 year old girl from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"I think that this book was one of the best Christian books I have read. In the beginning of the book, it was very wild. I feel bad for Mus when he had to be just taken out from his home because he was Christina. I read this book in my Youth Group. St. Macrina is a great Saint. The lesson I took away from this book is to be grateful."(6) Vasili's Review (11 Year old boy from Four Evangelists Orthodox Church Youth Group- Maryland)"I can understand peoples' opinions about the book making St. Macrina look spoiled; but, in my opinion, it made her feel more human and reinforced the idea that the saints were just like all of us and we can be like them. I give it a 9.47 out of 10. The lesson I took away from this book is that there is always hope."

I enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it. I am a Christian but I am not Orthodox. I would recommend to someone looking for a good book, and it is especially good for young adults, I think.

Great book which will be used with a church school class to teach the importance of God's holy ones. Highly recommended.

I am constantly on the look-out for great children's books. This book was not intended to be a children's book, but her life is written in story format. My daughter, who is seven loved it. It has sparked her interest in other lives of the saints.

this is a a horrible, awful, sick book, i would even say its evil , the lady who wrote it is a good story teller, she has talent , but she has used her talent to write evil and slanderous thing about a saint , Macrina's life happened so long ago, the author used her imagination to make a exciting story . problem is that she has made this saint in to a cursing , name calling, fit throwing, angry, desiring comforts , proud, caring about thing of this world a lot, having a temper, yeah before finishing this story to my children , i started editing what a read , and decided that even if we changed the names since this book seems slanderous to the saint , that reading about wicked made up people are not even edifying , which is a bummer , my husband said we should just throw it away , and wait for our other story book to come , the saint story books by Mary Fabyan Windeatt are good :) you should read them instead :) Saint Cathrerine of Siena is really good , and Saint Rose of Lima is realy good too , me and the children enjoyed them and there lives were holy and set apart , it is challenging to read about reall saints who loved the Lord , oh FATHER ARSENY is awesome too , his life , there is two books about him,my husband reads it to our whole family we enjoy it , my eight yr old lil girl says its fun and my buys who are 10 and 12 like it too my 12 yr old says its good and edifying and they really like it . so its ok if you dont get this awful book , there is good story books to read , that can challenge you to more holyness :) im excited about my other books we ordered by Mary Fabyan Windeatt , she has a whole series we are waiting for three new books to read yay :)

My 5- and 7-year olds loved this reading this book with me! One of the coolest aspects of this book is that the author makes it read like a novel, which is extremely engaging and hard to find in Saints stories, especially for kids. While much of the book is fiction, filling in the gaps of what is known of St. Macrina's life, the author does a good job of helping to bring the persecution to life, in a way that is likely to have happened. I would've liked to see a bit more detail into her prayer life and love of God, but I do appreciate how human and approachable Bev made this saint. Saints were people who struggle like we do. Please write a sequel(s) about her saintly grandchildren! My kids are requesting it!! Thank you :-)

I enjoyed Keeper of the Light. This is an exciting tale of a woman who went into hiding for her faith in the time of the late Roman Empire. Along with her husband and son, she struggled to remain undiscovered by soldiers who hunted Christians for sport. The author takes us through Macrina's life as she contends with not only being on the run, but also with having to give up so much for God. In the end she discovers her difficulties were not in vain. She has much to teach her grandchildren who are placed in her care and the heritage of their faith is carried on through them. The author has written an engaging historical tale that sweeps the reader along in the ups and downs of Macrina's life. The illustrations, historical notes and glossary all help complete the story. Although written for young adults, I would recommend it for all ages, and especially for all those interested in historical tales and faith experiences.

got it late for christmas.

This book is a wonderful companion to the "All the Stations" channel. Thank you Geoff and Vicki. Now I now what a "Pacer" is and what "moquette" is. Love this book and the you tube channel. Keep up the good work!

Companion to the YouTube videos.... All the Stations. If you want to explore the UK via rail it's not a bad read before you plan your trip

In 2017, the two authors undertook a project to visit all the then 2,563 stations on the national railway network in Great Britain. Starting in Penzance, they completed their epic railway adventure 15 weeks later in Wick. This project was entitled "All The Stations" and, as they travelled, they posted updates on various social media platforms (pun intended) and shared videos of their experiences on YouTube. A feature length documentary of their challenge is now available on YouTube. This book gives a taster of some of the highlights of their trip, and Vicki and Geoff hope that it will serve as an inspiration for readers to undertake their own railway adventure. The various chapters in the book cover such topics as some of the places visited; interesting facts about the stations; how the railway network is operated and maintained; some of the fascinating people they encountered; and the various different trains on which they travelled (of the 60 different classes of train that run on the network, they travelled on all bar one). I was pleased to see that my local station of Knaresborough gets an honourable mention. The final chapter gives suggestions for readers to undertake their own railway adventure by providing five different routes. Each route can be undertaken in one day, but the authors encourage people to get out and explore the different stations and surrounding areas, extending the trips over several days. However, far from being a book just for rail enthusiasts, and Vicki and Geoff go to great pains to point out that they are not trainspotters, this is a book that provides a fascinating snapshot of the communities and people that have been shaped by the railways, and will continue to do so as the network evolves. I enjoyed watching the videos posted during their adventure, which are characterised by the couple's infectious enthusiasm. I was pleased to see that this same enthusiasm for the subject is replicated in this book, which is very well illustrated with photographs taken during the trip. So, if you want to know how to rate stations on a quaint scale, or to find out why Vicki is so enthusiastic about Pacer trains (I suppose somebody has to be), then this is the book for you.

I've been a Koontz fan ever since his early effort "The Haunted Earth" over 50 years ago. Most Koontz books get an automatic "5 Stars", but a few of his in the last 10 years or so are great writing, but the plots simply do not grab me. Even so, I downrate "Ricochet Joe" as a book simply because it is not a standalone story. As an introduction to a whole new epic saga, it is very good, but not satisfying by itself. "Odd Thomas" was of course a similar intro, but it could stand alone as a great story on its' own merit. His recent full-length novel about the Hawaiian girl showed a similar weakness, but viewed as the first entry of a new series, I loved it."Watchers" is, of course, my mandatory favorite. After that, my taste points to "Dark Rivers of the Heart". But when I'm simply looking for a relaxing fun read, "Tick Tock" is my go-to Koontz story. "Ricochet Joe" has strong echoes from "Tick Tock" in its' unmistakable Koontzian humor. For now, that is its' greatest strength - I absolutely LOVE it ! I have great hopes for a long series of sequels.

A pretentious and complex novella. It is entertaining for a moment and for a low cost it is ok. However, i did not like it. Let me explain. It is a book that tries to innovate with aspects such as the concept of time, evil, moral dillema and such. But it tries to deal with all of this in a novella format (or even short story) so it does not feels detailed and it is difficult to understand (some things have to be read twice to understand what happened). Hence the pretentious. It tries to grab more that what could be easily covered in that size. Hence the complex. But on the same time it feels simple, gullible, predictable and basic at some other times where pace is slow and uninteresting. It spends about 30 to 40% on a guy picking garbage with a weird experience and then having ice cream with some girl. quite slow. And then all of the supernatural stuff and action stuff is really packed in very fast. And time travel and stuff like that appears unexplained. If the books cost less than 2 bucks go ahead, it is not a bad read. More than that, it is not worth it.

I have been reading books by Dean Koontz for decades. I wasn't sure this book would be up to their standard. This book was amazing. I had to read it from start to finish in one sitting. Dean Koontz still has it, whatever it is. He can still make me feel like I am in the story. I still HAD to find out what happens next. I enjoyed this book so much, I am going to see if there are any other new books. Also, I am going to go back and read all the books from the past 20 to 30 years. SO COOL.

If you have not read The Silent Corner or Whispering Room, I suggest you do though it's not completely necessary. Art Bell had a fantastic interview with Dean Koontz on parallel universes and his own personal experiences with them. I wish it were still available as it would be the perfect supplement to understanding the story. Pardon the cryptic review, but the story is excellent and fascinating in its musing on time and space.

The novella called Ricochet Joe was my first experience with the “Kindle in Motion” format, and it was worth a look but also rather underwhelming. The story itself, of a young man who finds himself in the middle of an eons-spanning good-vs.-evil struggle, is the kind of supernatural tale Dean Koontz can probably write in his sleep. It is disappointing because it so sloppy-seeming in terms of plot and characters. (Though part of that is driven by the shorter Kindle Single format.). As for the Motion option, it is underused here, with only a few illustrations that don’t have all that Motion in them. They are still very good bits of comic art, and they DO add to the story’s impact, but that effect is too limited.

In today's age of free Kindle books, I rarely pay for a book anymore. Dean Koontz is one of the few exceptions. As always with something written by Koontz. you know it will be well-written, well-edited, and well-proofed.Dean Koontz, one this generation's finest writers, keeps the hits coming with a novel (pun intended) approach. This Kindle offering has one advantage over a print book, the "Kindle in Motion" process where the books animation truly comes alive. I don’t believe in reviewers giving a detailed synopsis of the book. I feel that is the job of the author to get people to read the book and it is the job of the reviewer to give an honest review. Since I do not like to give spoilers, in a way, I cannot say all that I would like to about Ricochet Joe.The story is different from most of Koontz' "Dark Suspense" but that does not detract from the master story-telling within the electronic pages. As we did with Odd Thomas, we come to empathize and care for our protagonists. The story is fast-paced and filled with so many twists, even The Beatles would shout.

`Ricochet Joe` was a somewhat entertaining short thriller read, but nothing too impressive. The theme is nothing original and it lacks some elements of plausibility, but the book isn't boring. As a free short book (~1.5 hours), I don't regret reading it, but it didn't make me want to explore more the author or the story. The storyline is a mix of fantasy and bildungsroman, playing upon themes like good vs. evil, quantum theory and parallel universes mixed with magic. While the story is decently complete in itself, due to it's shortness it barely touches upon it's themes; but the book could be the opening of a series. The subjects are a little too complex for such a short book.I borrowed this as Single Kindle and it also had the Audible narration (for free). The reading experience from my smartphone was fine, but the narrator voice and tone was borderline boring. I don't pay too much attention on Kindle Motion animations, but they were decently good quality.

For many years, I have belonged to a Sutta study group in which we have read many of the key texts of the Pali canon, the earliest of the surviving Buddhist scriptures. We recently read the famous text (Sutta no. 63) in the Mahjima Nikaya, the mid-length discourses,in which the Buddha tried to discourage certain kinds of speculation by offering a simile based upon a poisoned arrow. If someone is struck by such an arrow, the important thing is to have it removed rather than to worry about the type of the arrow's wood or feathers, the clothing worn by the person who shot it, etc. The Buddha suggests that those who worry about certain metaphysical questions, such as whether the world is finite or infinite, whether the world is eternal or transient, or whether the soul is separate from the body or part of it, are like those people who ask irrelevant questions about the poisoned arrow rather than try to remove it as expeditiously as possible. This simile to me seems to capture something important about the relationship between Buddhist spirituality and certain scientific questions, and it encouraged me to read the Dalai Lama's recent book, "The Universe in a Single Atom."His Holiness the Dalai Lama's eloquent book in fact discusses (pp. 77-78) this enigmatic Sutta together with the divergent interpretations it has received in Buddhist thought. Difficult as the Sutta is, I think it captures a great deal of the Dalai Lama's message in his book, both in his teachings themselves and especially in the tone and manner with which the Dalai Lama conveys his teachings. The Dalai explores the Sutta I have mentioned in an appropriate place -- in the context of a discussion between the relationship between Buddhist thought and the big bang theory of the origin of the universe. The Sutta and the discussion suggest to me that spiritual questions have an urgency and immediacy of their own, notwithstanding scientific findings. But for me, the most revealing parts of this book were not the sections in which the Dalai Lama discusses the relationship between Buddhist thought and specific scientific teachings. Rather, I thought the most moving discussions were in the opening chapters and in the conclusion. In the opening chapters the Dalai Lama offers some personal biographical information about growing up in Tibet, his monastic training and teachers, and his budding interest in mechanical and scientific subjects. He describes with obvious affection the many Western scientists he has met over the years and how he has responded to what they have taught him. He also tries to draw a distinction between scientific study, which is based upon repeatable, empirical observation and theory -- what he describes as the standpoint of the "third party" and introspection and the search for meaning, which is subject of spirituality and of creative and altruistic endeavor. Science and spirituality freqently interpenetrate, for the Dalai Lama, and have much to give each other. He expands upon this discussion throughout his book and in its conclusion. In successive chapters of his book, the Dalai Lama discusses, quantum physics, the big bang theory, and evolution. He frequently draws parallels between the results of contemporary science and the results of Buddhist thought. In some cases, he points out that scientific discoveries invalidate certain crude assumptions about the nature of the physical universe found in early Buddhist texts. He candidly recognizes that where specific scientific findings conflict with a Buddhist teaching, the Buddhist teaching must give way. But in other cases, the Dalai Lama is somewhat critial of scientifc theory. Thus, the Dalai Lama seems to suggest that the theory of evolution takes too little account of karma -- the nature of consciousness and intentionality -- that he believes necessary to a full understanding of the world. In my opinion, these criticisms of evolutionary theory are unnecessary to the weight of the Dalai Lama's message to look within, to study consciousness and to develop wisdom and compassion. In the process of discussing evolutionary theory, however, the Dalai Lama gives a lucid discussion of kamma, distinguishing it from simple mechanical causation of from the fatalism with which it is sometimes confused. Richard Petty makes this point in his excellent review on this site. The strongest scientific discussions in the book are those of the last several chapters where the Dalai Lama discusses consciousness, as developed in Buddhist texts and in the practice of meditation. He suggests ways in which scientists working with the brain and meditators can interact in valuable ways that complement their respective practices without denying either of them. Because these discussions of consciousness and introspection involve subjects the Dalai Lama knows intimately and at first-hand, I found them more persuasive than some of the other writing in the book about the interaction between science and Buddhism. What I took from this book, and from the Pali Sutta discussed at the outset of this review, is that, in some instances, such as those captured by the poisoned arrow simile, spiritual questions are separate from those of science but that in other instances these questions interpenetrate. (That is, a person trying to understand him or herself needs to understand where science belongs in that particular endeavor) The results of scientific investigation, including specifically evolutionary theory, must be respected. But whatever science teaches, one must try to understand oneself and one's feelings, to understand suffering and grief, and to work towards a development of wisdom, compassion, and understanding. This is the message I took from the Dalai Lama's wonderful book.Robin Friedman

A must read for anyone who wants a really easy to read layperson's perspective on and explanation of quantum mechanics and other elements of modern physics. I love the fact that the Dalai Lama is a naturally inquisitive person and doesn't mind breaking the rules others put upon him. What really makes this book great is that, since the Dalai Lama is so well-known and respected, his information comes from some of the greatest Physics minds of our time, and his writings are edited from some of the greatest Physics teachers of our time.I regularly give this as a gift to those curious about the nature of matter, whether they are without any training or with a fair amount of training in Physics.Afterall, training does not make one a Physicist, and the absence of training does not excluded them from that title..A person either is one by their very nature or they are not.

If you're into science and spirituality , this book might rock your world. This is the first I've read of Dalai Lama XIV, and the guy is a complete genius , as posing great questions to the reader, and humanity as a whole when faced with the emerging areas of science, technology and global interconnectedness.Dalai Lama XIV unfolds profound wisdom and knowledge on the ever increasing areas of sciences and technology, genetics and metaphysics, and how ethics and human values play a role in the direction we should take as humanity, while respecting and encouraging scientific breakthroughs and discoveries. Do science and spirituality coexist, can genetic manipulations and ethics come to a common ground, how can we as humanity face these new advances? Beautifully written , the guy is a complete genius! Somewhat difficult to follow, because his knowledge of areas of science and spirituality is excellence, and his apologetics are unmatched !!

I was recently able to order some books online and they began to pour in this week. This was the second to arrive:The Universe in a Single Atom: The Convergence of Science and Spirituality by His Holiness the Dalai LamaI am already past page 50 and am absolutely fascinated by this man's journey. This book contains not only his thoughts on both the topics & their relation to one another but also his upbringing, tutoring, conversations, and relationships with many noted scientists & respected scholars.Another book worth noting that I read in 2013 is:The Quantum and the Lotus: A Journey to the Frontiers by Matthieu Ricard and Trinh Xuan ThuanBoth books are complimentary to one another and are highly recommended in my opinion.

Everyone wants to talk about how science contradicts religion and spirituality or, the opposite perspective, that to be spiritual you must ignore science-- this is a great book for those people. It really delves into the need for science to include a human factor (mainly compassion) and for religions to adapt and accept science as it reveals new truths about the universe we live in.Wonderfully written (how can you not love everything that the Dalai Lama says and writes??) and about a very important topic in our increasingly scientific and technologically driven world. I love hearing religious authorities say that they not only accept scientific advances but that they truly embrace and are very interested in such events. I also love hearing someone give a friendly reminder that our physical world is not the absolute only way to view life and that with great scientific advances come a great need for humans to remember their place in this world-- that we are all connected with each other and with this earth and must act with compassion and awareness while we change this world.
